Book Synopsis Writing a New France, 1604-1632 by : Dr Brian Brazeau
Download or read book Writing a New France, 1604-1632 written by Dr Brian Brazeau and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this study is the exciting period of French overseas exploration directly following the stagnation caused by the Wars of Religion. The book examines the early period of French involvement in Northeastern America through readings of key texts, principally travel and missionary accounts. Among the works examined are travel writings by Marc Lescarbot (Histoire de la Nouvelle-France) and Samuel de Champlain (Voyages), and missionary works by Gabriel Sagard (Dictionnaire de la Langue Huronne, Histoire du Canada), Jean de Brébeuf, and Paul le Jeune (early Relations de Jésuites). Through a careful examination of these texts, the author discerns a French "rewriting of the self" in relation to the American other, represented by both land and people. America, Brazeau argues, allowed a consolidation of past markers of identity, and forced a radical rereading of others, due to the difficulties presented by the Canadian wilderness and its natives. Writing a New France, 1604-1632 sheds fresh light on a significant moment in French colonial history while providing an innovative contribution to the understanding of early modern French identity and cultural contact.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Study of Language by : Leonard Bloomfield
Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Language written by Leonard Bloomfield and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fac simile edition of Bloomfield's An Introduction to the Study of Language (New York 1914), with an introductory article by Joseph S. Kess. Leonard Bloomfield (1887-1949) was responsible for two classic textbooks in the field of linguistics. The earlier, reproduced here, shows some striking differences to his later views, reflecting much of the then-current thinking on language matters. As such, it represents not only an interesting commentary on the theoretical development of an extremely influential linguist, but more importantly, it is a telling document in the evolving history of the discipline and a rich source for the (psycho)linguist interested in how and why we got from where we were to where we are.

Download or read book Origins of American Linguistics, 1643-1914 written by Routledge and published by . This book was released on 1997-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This set brings together for the first time a collection of texts that bear witness to the gradual development of linguistic studies in North America over a period of two and a half centuries. Beginning in the seventeenth century, with the first appearance of manuals written for the practical purpose of enabling English speakers to understand and communicate with the American Indians, the tradition of work on the indigenous languages of America culminates in the scholarly monographs published by Franz Boas and his collaborators at the beginning of the twentieth century. Alongside this, there is an awareness of the distinguishing characteristics of American English and its independence from British English. The political implications of this divergence are immediately evident. Controversy arises - and continues to the present day - over linguistic innovations that have their origins on the American side of the Atlantic. A third development that leaves its mark on American linguistics is the establishment of historical and comparative Indo-European studies during the course of the nineteenth century.
