Book Synopsis The National Tribune Civil War Index by : Richard Sauers
Download or read book The National Tribune Civil War Index written by Richard Sauers and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Tribune was the premier Union veterans’ newspaper of the post-Civil War era. Launched in 1877 by a New York veteran to help his comrades and sway Congress to pass better pension laws, a short time later the National Tribune began publishing firsthand accounts penned by the veterans themselves, and did so for decades thereafter. This rich, overlooked, and underused source of primary material offers a gold mine of eyewitness accounts of battles, strategy, tactics, camp life, and much more. From generals to privates, the paper printed articles and long serials on everything from major battles such as Gettysburg and Antietam, to arguments about which battery fired the shot that killed General Leonidas Polk, whether Grant’s army was surprised at Shiloh, and just about every topic in between. Unbeknownst to many, a number of Confederate accounts were also published in the paper. Decades in the making, Dr. Rick Sauers’ unique multi-volume reference work The National Tribune Civil War Index: A Guide to the Weekly Newspaper Dedicated to Civil War Veterans, 1877-1943 lists every article (1877-1943). The first two volumes are organized by author, his unit, title, and page/column location. The third volume—the main index—includes a subject, author, and unit guide, as well as a “Unit as Sources” index that lists articles that mention specific commands but are written by soldiers who were not members of that unit. As an added bonus, this reference guide includes the contents of both the National Tribune Scrapbook and the National Tribune Repository, two short-lived publications that included articles by veterans, and a listing of the major libraries that have National Tribune holdings. Thanks to Dr. Sauers, Civil War researchers and writers worldwide now have easy access to the valuable contents of this primary source material.
Book Synopsis Protides of the Biological Fluids by : H. Peeters
Download or read book Protides of the Biological Fluids written by H. Peeters and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protides of the Biological Fluids: Proceedings of the 25th Colloquium, Brugge, 1977 focuses on the structure, metabolism, transformations, and reactions of protides of biological fluids. The selection first takes a look at the structure and metabolism of plasma lipoproteins, including phosphatidylinositol exchange protein from bovine brain; structural integrity of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide carrier; and reassembly of the monosaccharide transport system of the human erythrocyte in black lipid membranes. The book then discusses species and dietary effects on lipoprotein apoprotein metabolism in vivo; transfer of surface and core lipids of a lipoprotein from plasma into aortic wall; and pathophysiological implications of hyperlipoproteinemia. The text focuses on lipoproteins of human peripheral lymph, portacaval shunt and lipid metabolism, and low density lipoprotein catabolism in the liver. The methods and results of experiments are presented. The book also discusses the effects of dietary cholesterol on serum lipoprotein in human; long-term effects of physical training on blood lipids and lipoproteins in primary hyperlipoproteinemia; and effects of clofibrate on plasma proteins in subjects with hypertriglyceridemia. The selection is a vital source of data for readers wanting to study the protides of biological fluids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical exploration of the genealogy of Freire's thinking and the ways in which Freire's seminal work has influenced philosophical and political movements, offering an analysis of how this work might be developed for the future. Irwin explores Freire's philosophy of education, which balanced traditional ethical and spiritual concerns with contemporary ideas and drew upon Christian and Hegelian-Marxist political thought and insights from existentialism and psychoanalysis. The impact of Freire's work and legacies are considered, drawing from his emphasis on the need for praxis to bring about real and progressive change, with special reference to his work in Brazil and his Third Worldist discourses. It will also be of interest to postgraduate students looking at cultural and political theory.

Download or read book Kon Ichikawa written by Cinematheque Ontario and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-24 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kon Ichikawa has long been internationally ac-knowledged as one of the most accomplished and prolific masters of Japanese cinema, in the exalted company of Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Yasujiro Ozu. Celebrated for his many adaptations of famous Japanese novels such as Fires on the Plain, Harp of Burma, Kagi, Conflagration, and The Makioka Sisters, Ichikawa is an artist with an astounding command of many genres, forms and tones, from ferociously humanist war films to sophisticated social satires, formalist documentaries (the acclaimed Tokyo Olympiad) to extravagant period pieces (An Actor’s Revenge.) This volume, designed to accompany a retrospective of Ichikawa’s films, spans his entire career and includes essays and commentaries by such leading scholars of Japanese cinema as Donald Richie, Tadao Sato, Max Tessier, David Desser, Linda Erlich, and Keiko McDonald. Many articles and translations were commissioned for the book, including those by Tony Rayns, Aaron Gerow, Dennis Washburn and Catherine Russell. A new career interview with critic Mark Schilling is one of several illuminating discussions with the director included in this volume. Appraisals of Ichikawa by novelist Yukio Mishima, director Yasuzo Masumura, and critic Pauline Kael round out the portrait of a director prized for his elegant compositional style, venomous wit, and unerring humanism. Published by Cinematheque Ontario. Distributed in Canada by Wilfrid Laurier University Press. Distributed outside Canada by Indiana University Press.
