In this compendium of stylistic approaches, freelance musical director, composer, musician, and tutor Will Marshall provides a multifaceted intermediate-level guide to playing traditional Scottish dance music. From separate left and right-hand part analysis to the fine points of deploying the “Scotch snap” and bellows phrasing, Marshall offers the basic tools to create melody, bass and chord arrangements from a traditional Scottish tune or ceilidh collection. He presents chapters on Scottish accordion history and dance rhythms, detailed instructions for playing jigs, reels, and strathspeys, plus tips on the execution of grace notes and accents. Even seasoned accordionists will appreciate the chapter on “Practice and Mindset” plus the author’s ideas about compiling sets for dancers to kick up their heels. Includes access to online audio.

Book excerpt: Every country in Europe seems to have rediscovered its own vital tradition of fiddle music, except England ... But, English fiddle music forms an important, yet neglected, part of the mosaic of Old and New World fiddle styles.Chris Bartram has played this music for over forty years. He has learned from traditional musicians around his home communities and more widely in other parts of England and in Cornwall. He has studied the majority of the existing field recordings of older generations of players and many of the handwritten manuscripts of nineteenth century fiddlers. 'English Fiddling' contains a wide variety of traditional tunes, an essay about the history of the instrument in England and a number of archive photographs.'English Fiddling' is intended to be a source for people who can already play the fiddle - or violin - at some level. This is not a book for the complete beginner, although a player who can play simple tunes in the first position and who can read music a little will find it helpful and instructive. The companion CD contains a selection of tunes played by Chris and some of his friends.•

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish traditional music has been through a successful revival in the mid-twentieth century and has now entered a professionalised and public space. Devolution in the UK and the surge of political debate surrounding the independence referendum in Scotland in 2014 led to a greater scrutiny of regional and national identities within the UK, set within the wider context of cultural globalisation. This volume brings together a range of authors that sets out to explore the increasingly plural and complex notions of Scotland, as performed in and through traditional music. Traditional music has played an increasingly prominent role in the public life of Scotland, mirrored in other Anglo-American traditions. This collection principally explores this movement from historically text-bound musical authenticity towards more transient sonic identities that are blurring established musical genres and the meaning of what constitutes ‘traditional’ music today. The volume therefore provides a cohesive set of perspectives on how traditional music performs Scottishness at this crucial moment in the public life of an increasingly (dis)United Kingdom.

Book excerpt: Francis James Child's English and Scottish Popular Ballads, published in ten parts from 1882 to 1898, contained the texts and variants of 305 extant themes written down between the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries. Unsurpassed in its presentation of texts, this exhaustive collection devoted little attention to the ballad music, a want that was filled by Bertrand Harris Bronson in his four volume Traditional Tunes of the Child Ballads. The present book is an abridged, one-volume edition of that work, setting forth music and text for proven examples of oral tradition, with a new comprehensive introduction. Its convenient format makes readily available to students and scholars the materials for a study of the Child ballads as they have been preserved in the British-American singing tradition. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Recorded in stereo with virtuosos Gabriel Donohue (steel- and nylon-string guitar and piano) and Robbie Walsh (bodhran- frame drum played with a stick), the five-string banjo is out front and plays through each melody in real-life tempo with authentic Celtic chordal and rhythmic backing. the recording features the music of all Six Celtic Nations and includes jigs, reels, hornpipes, slides, polkas, marches, country dances, larides, andros, slipjigs, strathspeys, airs and O'Carolan tunes. 35 songs in the book are not on the CD.

Book excerpt: The fiddle has been popular in Scotland for over 500 years as an accompanying instrument for dance and song. Bonnie Rideout has been playing traditional Scottish fiddle music since the 1980s. This collection presents favorite tunes which Bonnie had stashed away over the years while awaiting the perfect opportunity to record them. The music written here ranges from J. Scott Skinner's "Dr. Gordon Stable (a wonderful fiery reel she once played to garner her first national fiddling title as a young teenager), to "Fear A Bhata (a heartbreaking air she has known as long as she can remember). These Scottish fiddle selections have been carefully transcribed from Bonnie's recording "Scottish Fire. It would be impossible to write down all her bowings and every grace note, especially since they are not always consistent from one playing to the next. Readers should use this book as a basis for exploring their own voice within the music.

Book excerpt: North American Fiddle Music: A Research and Information Guide is the first large-scale annotated bibliography and research guide on the fiddle traditions of the United States and Canada. These countries, both of which have large immigrant populations as well as Native populations, have maintained fiddle traditions that, while sometimes faithful to old-world or Native styles, often feature blended elements from various traditions. Therefore, researchers of the fiddle traditions in these two countries can not only explore elements of fiddling practices drawn from various regions of the world, but also look at how different fiddle traditions can interact and change. In addition to including short essays and listings of resources about the full range of fiddle traditions in those two countries, it also discusses selected resources about fiddle traditions in other countries that have influenced the traditions in the United States and Canada.
