The region south of the St. Lawrence, about fifty by one hundred and fifty miles, between Montreal and the boundary of the United States, is very fertile, as also some sections north of the river. Below Quebec the soil is poorer. Her great pine forests have been a source of wealth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Moreover, if it is true that we habitually employ a patois, it would be useful to know its origin. Where does it come from? To what type is it connected? When and where was it born? Did our fathers bring it with them from France and, in this case, have their descen dants piously preserved it? On the other hand, if the ancestral speech was French, have we.let ourselves cor rupt it. Have we committed this fault of reducing it to the rank of a patois? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of New Canadians The Book of New Canadians contains stories told by the children of twenty different countries. The stories de scribe the homes of about half the nations representatives of which have become citizens of Canada. Realising that it would be impossible in a book of this size to tell stories about all the different peoples now living in Canada, I consulted the latest census report of the Dominion Government. In the report the different nationals are listed in the order of the numbers resident in Canada. I chose the first twenty listed. Equally interesting and instructive stories about the other countries and their peoples could be told. Should these be called for a second book will, no doubt, be prepared. It is perhaps unnecessary to explain why stories of I France have not been included in the book. Since 1763 immigration from France has been very small, and as for the French Canadians they are much more anciently Canadian than the British Canadians. Soldiers from our shores, citizen-soldiers, have been landing on the northern coast of France in tens of thousands, and passing through the same seaport towns whence nearly four hundred years ago men sailed forth to the westward to discover a fabled land. This country, discovered by the French and colonized by them and by the English, this land which was now French and now English as the fortune of war changed in Europe as well as in America, has become a nation, and when the time of trial came and danger threatened the ancestral homes in the two Motherlands, Canada hesitated not a moment but offered her services in the cause of freedom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Element in the Canadian Northwest French quite as well as the ma jority of educated Americans talk English. I might have said more, for I am not aware that there is any such common and widespread fault in French Canada as the use of will for shall, and would for should. But in the main the parallel holds good even in the matter of accent. For the chief characteristic of the French Canadian, as well as of the American, accent, is the tendency to draw], to be monotonous, and to exaggerate the number of nasal sounds. But these peculiarities are not confined to this continent of ours. They exist in Normandy and many other parts of France; they are not by any means so faulty as the Provencal or Gascon accent. I have met highly educated men from the North of England whose accent was as nasal as if they hailed from Idaho or Ari zona. In fact I am inclined to think that in all European countries and partien larly in France, Italy, Germany and Spain, the farther you wander away from the great centres of culture, where the concourse of highly trained minds stimu lates men to perfection in the use of their vocal organs, the more likely you are to find nature's great law of following the line of least resistance assert itself in drawling and nasality. However, in this respect as also in a more correct use of French prose - that most subtle and delicate of all modern vehicles of thought - Canada has improved wonderfully in the last quarter of a century and is im proving every day. If the United States can point to a revival of letters heralded in the present day by such skillful artists as James, Howells and Cable, French Canadians may well be proud of Judge Routhier, Benjamin Sulte, Chau veau, Marmette, the two Taches (our archbishop and his brother), and Louis Honore Frechette. Gage, the British commander, drafted a contin gent of French Canadians to aid in revenging on the Indians the massa cre of the garrison at Mackinaw, the levies were treated as beasts of burden, and set to work at the point of the bayonet, while the British regulars sat at ease in their tents. The legislative council or senate excluded all natives of Canada from a share in the conduct of its affairs. N 0 correct idea can be given within the narrow limits of a newspaper history of the vexatious injustice practiced upon the French population. They were at one time denied the right of sitting as jurors, and were in many respects a proscribed class. Small wonder that many French Canadians joined the ranks of the heroes of the American revolution in 1776.
