Book excerpt: As more parts of the world outside Europe became accessible =– and in the wake of social and technological developments in the 18th century – a growing number of exotic artefacts entered European markets. The markets for such objects thrived, while a collecting culture and museums emerged. This book provides insights into the methods and places of exchange, networks, prices, expertise, and valuation concepts, as well as the transfer and transport of these artefacts over 300 years and across four continents. The contributions are from international experts, including Ting Chang, Nélia Dias, Noëmie Etienne, Jonathan Fine, Philip Jones, Sylvester Okwunodu Ogbechie, Léa Saint-Raymond, and Masako Yamamoto.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to Salem sea captains, Gilded Age millionaires, curators on horseback and missionaries gone native, North American museums now possess the greatest collections of Chinese art outside of East Asia itself. How did it happen? The China Collectors is the first full account of a century-long treasure hunt in China from the Opium Wars and the Boxer Rebellion to Mao Zedong's 1949 ascent. The principal gatherers are mostly little known and defy invention. They included "foreign devils" who braved desert sandstorms, bandits and local warlords in acquiring significant works. Adventurous curators like Langdon Warner, a forebear of Indiana Jones, argued that the caves of Dunhuang were already threatened by vandals, thereby justifying the removal of frescoes and sculptures. Other Americans include George Kates, an alumnus of Harvard, Oxford and Hollywood, who fell in love with Ming furniture. The Chinese were divided between dealers who profited from the artworks' removal, and scholars who sought to protect their country's patrimony. Duanfang, the greatest Chinese collector of his era, was beheaded in a coup and his splendid bronzes now adorn major museums. Others in this rich tapestry include Charles Lang Freer, an enlightened Detroit entrepreneur, two generations of Rockefellers, and Avery Brundage, the imperious Olympian, and Arthur Sackler, the grand acquisitor. No less important are two museum directors, Cleveland's Sherman Lee and Kansas City's Laurence Sickman, who challenged the East Coast's hegemony. Shareen Blair Brysac and Karl E. Meyer even-handedly consider whether ancient treasures were looted or salvaged, and whether it was morally acceptable to spirit hitherto inaccessible objects westward, where they could be studied and preserved by trained museum personnel. And how should the US and Canada and their museums respond now that China has the means and will to reclaim its missing patrimony?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how and why millions of Chinese works of art got exported to collectors and institutions in the West, in particular to the United States. As China’s last dynasty was weakening and collapsing from 1860 into the early years of the twentieth century, China’s internal chaos allowed imperial and private Chinese collections to be scattered, looted and sold. A remarkable and varied group of Westerners entered the country, had their eyes opened to centuries of Chinese creativity and gathered up paintings, bronzes and ceramics, as well as sculptures, jades and bronzes. The migration to America and Europe of China’s art is one of the greatest outflows of a culture’s artistic heritage in human history. A good deal of the art procured by collectors and dealers, some famous and others little known but all remarkable in individual ways, eventually wound up in American and European museums. Today some of the art still in private hands is returning to China via international auctions and aggressive purchases by Chinese millionaires.

Book excerpt: Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany's (American, 1848-1933) extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, New York, completed in 1905, was the epitome of Tiffany's achievement and in many ways defined this multifaceted artist. Tiffany designed every aspect of the project inside and out, creating a total aesthetic environment. This publication accompanies an exhibition that reveals Tiffany's most personal art, bringing into focus this remarkable artist who lavished as much care and creativity on the design and furnishing of his home and gardens as he did on all the wide-ranging media in which he worked. Although the house tragically burned to the ground in 1957, many of its surviving architectural elements and interior characteristics are included in this volume. Also featured are Tiffany's personal collections of his own work-breathtaking stained-glass windows, paintings, glass and ceramic vases-as well as the artist's collections of Japanese, Chinese, and Native American works of art. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania observed its seventy-fifth anniversary. During those seventy-five years the sciences of anthropology, archaeology, and ethnology—the studies of man, his antiquity, and his cultures—grew into major areas of study and research. Paralleling this growth of the study of man, in fact an integral part of it, has been the growth of the University Museum. Men in Search of Man tells the story of the University Museum by telling the stories of the men who were responsible for the success of the institution. The scientific contributions are recorded in hundreds of journals and periodicals; this is the story of the men who made those contributions. The University Museum was a direct outgrowth of a Babylonian expedition to Nip pur, a prebiblical city-state in Mesopotamia. The artifacts brought back from this expedition, and subsequent ones, formed the nucleus of the museum's famous collection. The expedition to Nippur was only the beginning, however, of a series of expeditions to such far-flung places as Ur of the Chaldees; Tikal, Guatemala; and Meydum, Egypt. These archaeological feats, and many others, firmly established the University Museum as an important force in archaeological discovery and exploitation. Percy C. Madeira, Jr. has told the story of the University Museum with the knowledge and insight that could come only from having been intimately associated with the institution for more than thirty years. Serving successively as Vice-President, President, and Chairman of the Board, Madeira was instrumental in the growth and expansion of the University Museum and its facilities and services. Along with the story of the museum, the author has told some of the classic anecdotes relative to the museum and its staff. Illustrated with many photographs of the expeditions, as well as of the collections, Men in Search of Man contains several supplements listing additional information pertinent to the history of the museum.
