Book excerpt: Abstract: Athletic Organizational Structure-The span of control, or the ratio of supervisors to subordinates, is a vital aspect to how an organization operates (Chelladurai, 2001; Galbraith, 1995). The present researcher examined NCAA DIII athletics departments (N = 445) with regard to the number of personnel categorized by success level based on post-season performance, as measured by the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup rankings. Furthermore, the researcher utilized the Athletics Department Organizational DNA Questionnaire (Appendix D) to gain the athletics directors' opinions of departmental shape, communication flow, primary roles and reporting lines. Significant differences (p .05) were found for the number of administrators, number of head coaches positions, number of actual head coaches, and number of coaches to teams ratios among levels of success. No significant differences (p .05) were found among the levels of success within the people ratio, which is administrators to coaches, or within the dual role category, which is administrators who also serve as head coaches. No significant differences (p > .05) were found among levels of success with regards to responses (N = 130) to the Athletics Department Organizational DNA Questionnaire.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The role of interactions between Athletic Directors, Coaches, and Staff on organizational structure and culture was examined using a phenomenological case study approach at a selected NCAA Division III athletic department. 18 individuals identified within the department, with various experiences were interviewed and asked to complete two scales: LSS (Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980) and Grit (Duckworth et al., 2007). From the data collected, there were five main themes and ten attributes that emerged from the data: 1) Communication, 2) Relationships, 3) Institutional support, 4) Philosophy/mission/vision, and 5) Leadership style; trust, compassion, empowerment, autonomy, consistency, competence, accountability, responsibility, respect, and ownership. The methodology of the study covered development of organizational culture and structure within the setting of a selected NCAA Division III institution. The results from the current study aimed to provide professionals in the field of NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics with a framework to develop a positive culture that empowers the members within and to examine culture development and leadership styles across NCAA Divisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic world of collegiate sports has seen seismic changes since the previous edition of Administration of Intercollegiate Athletics was published. Conference realignments; name, image, and likeness (NIL) advancements; multibillion-dollar media rights deals; expanded bowl games and tournaments; and big-money corporate sponsorships have all been arisen out of the burgeoning popularity of college sports. The growing complexities of the sport administrator’s role necessitate a college text that reflects the times. And that’s exactly what Administration of Intercollegiate Athletics, Second Edition, does. Some of the most informed and experienced professionals in the field of athletics administration have lent their expertise to the updated second edition, making it the most comprehensive resource available today for students aspiring to work in the field and for professionals navigating an increasingly demanding environment. The text offers students a deep dive into the day-to-day operations of collegiate athletics departments. With chapters covering governing bodies and conference governance; leadership and management; rules compliance; academics, eligibility, and student-athlete development; media relations and production; financial operations and budgeting; marketing, ticketing, licensing, and sponsorships; facility and event management; alumni relations; and support services, the text provides students with the essential underpinnings of an athletics administration position. New to this edition is a chapter dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion to provide broader discussions of athlete social justice activism, gender equity, Title IX compliance, feminist theory, and allyship. In addition, the second edition discusses the rise of NIL deals, legalized sports wagering, and esports, as well as the lasting financial impacts of COVID-19 on athletics departments at all levels of intercollegiate sport. While Division I schools grab the spotlight, administrators in Division II, Division III, junior colleges, and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) athletics departments share the same responsibilities as their Division I counterparts. Throughout the text, Administration of Intercollegiate Athletics, Second Edition, takes care to address the needs and concerns of administrators at these levels, even more so than in the previous edition. New and updated features include Leadership Lesson sidebars, discussion questions, learning activities, and case studies designed to enhance learning and provide practical application of the concepts presented. Also included are Industry Profile sidebars that highlight prominent athletics administrators, Technology Tools sidebars that showcase the latest advancements assisting administrators in their roles, and Professional Development sidebars that provide students with direction on how to enter and succeed in the industry. Administration of Intercollegiate Athletics, Second Edition, is an essential textbook for courses on intercollegiate athletics, sport management, or sport marketing and is a relied-on resource for current sport administrators.

Topics include: a comprehensive history of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, an examination of the funding mechanisms utilized by intercollegiate athletic departments, an in-depth magnification of the increasing corporatization of higher education and athletics, and a look into potential future debates and lines of inquiry surrounding this topic. This is the 5th issue of the 41st volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Chapters cover the historical contexts and background of campus athletics, issues and institutional tensions over market pressures, the spectacle of college athletics and how this spectacle influences athlete experiences, and the ways in which leaders are navigating these issues. Through stories of higher education that focus on the ways athletic departments leverage their institutional values, this book encourages readers to examine the purpose, mission, and academic values of their institutions, and to evaluate the role of their athletic programs, to improve outcomes and experiences on campus for students and student-athletes alike.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little to no research has been conducted examining the factors contributing to athletic department competitive success in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics. Several studies have linked student-athlete institutional choice factors to academic factors, while Division III student-athletes have indicated that both athletic and academic programs are important in their college choice (Goss, Jubenville, & Oregan, 2006; Konnert & Giese, 1987; National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2008; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2011; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2016). The NCAA Division III philosophy states that student-athletes should be integrated into the whole of the institution, not treated differently than non-student-athletes, and that admissions standards should be the same for student-athletes as they are for non-student-athletes (Stubbeman & Cooper, 2015). This research examined the relationship between institutional academic profile and athletic department competitive success. Academic profile was measured through institutional selectivity (acceptance rates), caliber of incoming students (ACT/SAT scores), four-year graduation rates, and retention rates (first to second year of enrollment). Athletic department competitive success was measured by the institution's placement in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup (LSDC). Spearman rank correlation was used to examine each independent variable against the institution's points earned in the LSDC. Positive relationships were found between each independent variable and points earned in the LSDC - ranging from -.306 to .563. These positive relationships present various implications and considerations for institutional administration and coaches to consider in recruiting student-athletes and setting expectations for competitive success.
