Es wird eine zunehmende Differenzierung der Gesellschaft im Laufe der Entwicklung festgestellt. Diese verläuft stufenweise von segmentärer über stratifikatorische bis zu funktionaler Differenzierung (KNEER und NASSEHI 1993, S. 122 - 140). Dabei sind die einzelnen Stufen aber nicht durch eine vollständige Ablösung der jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Strukturen gekennzeichnet, sondern eher durch ein Hinzukommen der weiteren Stufen im Laufe der fortschreitenden Entwicklung.
