Book Synopsis Weight Management by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Weight Management written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of fitness and body composition standards in the U.S. Armed Forces has always been to select individuals best suited to the physical demands of military service, based on the assumption that proper body weight and composition supports good health, physical fitness, and appropriate military appearance. The current epidemic of overweight and obesity in the United States affects the military services. The pool of available recruits is reduced because of failure to meet body composition standards for entry into the services and a high percentage of individuals exceeding military weight-for-height standards at the time of entry into the service leave the military before completing their term of enlistment. To aid in developing strategies for prevention and remediation of overweight in military personnel, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command requested the Committee on Military Nutrition Research to review the scientific evidence for: factors that influence body weight, optimal components of a weight loss and weight maintenance program, and the role of gender, age, and ethnicity in weight management.
Book Synopsis Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation, Second Edition by : Roland N. Pittman
Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation, Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Book Synopsis Principles and Methods of Toxicology, Fifth Edition by : A. Wallace Hayes
Download or read book Principles and Methods of Toxicology, Fifth Edition written by A. Wallace Hayes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-09-25 with total page 2304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded on the paradox that all things are poisons and the difference between poison and remedy is quantity, the determination of safe dosage forms the base and focus of modern toxicology. In order to make a sound determination there must be a working knowledge of the biologic mechanisms involved and of the methods employed to define these mechanisms. While the vastness of the field and the rapid accumulation of data may preclude the possibility of absorbing and retaining more than a fraction of the available information, a solid understanding of the underlying principles is essential. Extensively revised and updated with four new chapters and an expanded glossary, this fifth edition of the classic text, Principles and Methods of Toxicology provides comprehensive coverage in a manageable and accessible format. New topics include 'toxicopanomics', plant and animal poisons, information resources, and non-animal testing alternatives. Emphasizing the cornerstones of toxicology-people differ, dose matters, and things change, the book begins with a review of the history of toxicology and followed by an explanation of basic toxicological principles, agents that cause toxicity, target organ toxicity, and toxicological testing methods including many of the test protocols required to meet regulatory needs worldwide. The book examines each method or procedure from the standpoint of technique and interpretation of data and discusses problems and pitfalls that may be associated with each. The addition of several new authors allow for a broader and more diverse treatment of the ever-changing and expanding field of toxicology. Maintaining the high-quality information and organizational framework that made the previous editions so successful, Principles and Methods of Toxicology, Fifth Edition continues to be a valuable resource for the advanced practitioner as well as the new disciple of toxicology.

Download or read book Technical Report on Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Bromochloroacetic Acid (CAS No. 5589-96-8) in F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Drinking Water Studies) written by R. L. Melnick and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bromochloroacetic acid is a water disinfection by-product. Bromochloroacetic acid was nominated for toxicity and carcinogenicity studies in rats and mice because of widespread human exposure and because a related dihaloacetate, dichloroacetate, was found to be carcinogenic to the liver of rats and mice. Drinking water was selected as the route of exposure to mimic human exposure to this chemical. Male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice were exposed to bromochloroacetic acid (greater than 95% pure) in drinking water for 2 weeks, 3 months, or 2 years. Genetic toxicology studies were conducted in ¿Salmonella typhimurium,¿ ¿Escherichia coli,¿ and peripheral blood erythrocytes of exposed mice. Illustrations.
Book Synopsis Technical Report on Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Cumene (CAS No. 98-82-8) in F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Inhalation Studies) by : P. C. Chan
Download or read book Technical Report on Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Cumene (CAS No. 98-82-8) in F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Inhalation Studies) written by P. C. Chan and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cumene is produced in a modified Friedel-Crafts reaction process. Cumene is the principal chemical used in the production of phenol and acetone. Cumene is used: as a thinner; as a constituent of some petroleum-based solvents; in gasoline blending, diesel fuel, and high-octane aviation fuel; and as a raw material for peroxides and oxidation catalysts. Because cumene is a good solvent for fats and resins, it has been suggested as a replacement for benzene in many industrial applications. Cumene occurs naturally in petroleum and in a variety of foodstuffs. Cumene was nominated for study because of its high production volume, presence in gasoline and other fuels, potential for human exposure, and lack of existing carcinogenecity test data. Illus.
Book Synopsis Technical Report on Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Formamide (CAS No. 75-12-7) in F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Gavage Studies) by : R. D. Irwin
Download or read book Technical Report on Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Formamide (CAS No. 75-12-7) in F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Gavage Studies) written by R. D. Irwin and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formamide has a variety of uses, including as a softener for paper, gums, and glues. This report details the study of the effects of formamide on male and female rats and mice to identify potential toxic or cancer-related hazards. Solutions containing formamide in deionized water were deposited directly into the stomachs of male and female rats and mice. Groups of 50 animals received 20, 40, or 80 milligrams of formamide per kilogram body weight 5 days per week for 2 years; groups of animals receiving water alone served as the control groups. At the end of the study, tissues from more than 40 sites were examined for every animal. The only effects observed in male and female rats were lower body weight in animals receiving the highest dose of formamide and a slight increase in bone marrow hyperplasia in male rats. The study concludes that exposure to formamide did not cause cancer in male or female rats, but it did produce hemangiosarcomas in the liver of male mice and may have been related to an increase in liver tumors in female mice. Increased incidence of bone marrow hyperplasia in male rats and testicular mineralization in male mice were also associated with formamide exposure. Illus.
