Book excerpt: Although not really a "season" in the traditional sense, Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday of the longest season of the liturgical year, lasting until Advent-nearly half of the calendar year. And with many Christian hymns fitting these Sundays, this prominent and venerable composer has crafted 16 organ settings appropriate for this period of time. Useful as separate preludes, offertories and/or postludes within the worship service, or even as extended hymn introductions, they will fill an important niche in the organist's library.

Book excerpt: The seasons of the church year that follow Easter, including Ascension, Pentecost, and Trinity Sunday, have sometimes received less attention in the organ service-playing repertoire. Anna Laura Page's collection of hymn arrangements for these late spring and summer Sundays will provide a wealth of useful material with straightforward and easy-to-play pieces. All of the hymn tunes employed are well-known, and several of the pieces combine multiple hymns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organ and handbell offerings abound for the major seasons of the church year. However, specific titles appropriate for some of the less frequently occurring solemn and celebratory events in the life of the church such as All Saints' Day, Thanksgiving and Trinity Sunday, can be a bit more difficult to find. In an effort to help fill this gap, Doug Wagner has compiled a highly musical collection of six works based on familiar hymn tunes, scored for organ and handbells (with compatible parts for 2-3 and 4-5 octave ensembles). Since some of the hymns associated with these tunes speak to multiple applications, single titles may well be used effectively in several worship settings.

Book excerpt: Sacred Music Library is proud to present the last in our first series of books of organ music for the Liturgical Year. After the great Feasts of Easter and Pentecost, and the solemnity of Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi, we embark upon the long summer and fall days of Ordinary Time, which can seem to stretch inexorably into a never-ending future. Without an overarching "theme" it can be a challenge to keep a sense of musical direction in a period where there are few feast days. Noel Jones has met this challenge and has succeeded in creating a truly useful selection of pieces that will make Ordinary Time fizz with interest and musical satisfaction. When Noel first talked about this project with me, we both agreed that it would be great to "over deliver". By that, we wanted to see volumes that would have more music than any other comparable volume on the market; enough that organists would be able to return year after year and still gain something new. I believe that this has proved to be the case, and a discussion with a Quarterly subscriber at the recent NPM Convention in Cincinnati has shown this to be true. is particular organist said that it would probably take him five years to play all the music in these volumes. That is exactly what we wanted this series of books to be. In addition to a broad selection of preludes and postludes, Noel has also established a Wedding section in this volume, where you may find excellent choices for the lengthy wedding preludes that we are often called upon to fill. In addition, Noel has included some more choral anthems. This was an excellent idea in the last issue, and it allows these timeless works to be heard at mass, even where there is not a choir available to sing them in their original form. Their harmonic structure is uniquely suited for inclusion in the sacred liturgy. This set of four books has truly been a labor of love. Noel has maintained its high standard of excellence throughout, both in terms of the music selected, and the quality of the engraving. In this he has been sup- ported and assisted with great diligence and skill by his wife, Ellen Doll Jones, a professional organist of high caliber herself, together with the excellent team of engravers at Frog Music Press. The Verdin Co. has been honored to be associated with such an impressive and important contribution to the musical resources available to Catholic Church musicians, and we hope that all four volumes will continue to provide you with a rich source of inspiration for many years to come. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Influenced by Robert and Clara Schumann and Joseph Joachim, Johannes Brahms not only learned to play the organ at the beginning of his career, but also wrote significant compositions for the instrument as a result of his early counterpoint study. He composed for the organ only sporadically or as part of larger choral and instrumental works in his subsequent career. During the final year of his life, however, he returned to pure organ composition with a set of chorale preludes--though many of these are thought to have been revisions of earlier works. Today, the organ works of Johannes Brahms are recognized as beautifully-crafted compositions by church and concert organists across the world and have become a much-cherished component of the repertoire. Until now, however, most scholarly accounts of Brahms's life and work treat his works for the organ as a minor footnote in his development as a composer. Precisely because the collection of organ works is not extensive, the pieces--composed at different times during Brahms's lifetime--help to map his path as a composer, pinpointing various stages in his artistic development. In this volume, Barbara Owen offers the first in-depth study of this corpus, considering Brahms's organ works in relation to his background, methods, and overall artistic development, his contacts with organs and organists, the influence of his predecessors and contemporaries, and analyses of each specific work and its place in Brahms's career. Her expert history and analysis of Brahms's individual organ works and their interpretation also investigates contemporary practices relative to the performance of these pieces. The book's three valuable appendices present a guide to editions of Brahms's organ works, a discussion of the organ in Brahms's world that highlights some organs the composer would have heard, and a listing of the organ transcriptions of Brahms's work. Blending unique insights into composition and performance practice, this book will be read eagerly by performers, students, and scholars of the organ, Brahms, and the music of the Nineteenth Century.
