Download or read book Orem written by Jay H. Buckley and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, a group of hardy pioneers ascended the "Provo Bench" that overlooks Utah Lake. With dreams of fruit orchards and vegetable fields, they uprooted the sagebrush, dug irrigation canals, and planted crops. These farms were successful, and they helped transform Orem into a dynamic community by the time the railroad arrived. The produce was boxed and shipped across Utah on the Orem Line, and the Provo/Orem area earned the nickname "Garden City of Utah." Incorporated in 1919, Orem was transformed again during World War II when the U.S. government constructed Geneva Steel Mill on the shores of Utah Lake. Blue collar workers joined farmers and ranchers in building a city. Orem supports higher education and is home to Utah Valley University. Although malls and subdivisions have replaced many of the orchards and the steel mill has closed, Orem remains rooted in its past while growing towards its future.

Book excerpt: Encapsulating the work of a classic nursing theorist, this book provides a unique overview of Orem's Self-Care Deficit Model of Nursing. Orem's Model proposes that nursing should be especially concerned with the patient's need to move continuously towards responsible action in self-care in order to sustain life and health or to recover from disease or injury. The actions required of nurses to achieve these goals are clearly described.

Download or read book Killer of Crying Deer written by William Orem and published by . This book was released on 2010-09-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning poet, playwright, and novelist William Orem's literary novel KILLER OF CRYING DEER is an account of the beauty and horror that unfolds when an English slaver ship carrying an abducted boy (the protagonist) wrecks off the coast of the Florida Keys in 1699. The survivors encounter a village of the "noble savage" Calusa tribe and the not-so-noble crew of Spanish Catholic zealots led by the sadistic Comandante Albenix. Orem is a stylist whose prose is both visceral and lyrical, a consummate wordsmith whose ear for dialogue is pitch-perfect and whose storytelling skills deftly lead the reader through young Henry Cote's abduction at sea to the unexpected conclusion of his horrendous journey, all rendered with unflinching authenticity.

Book excerpt: This book addresses how to explore, generate and control energies not usually available to humans. 190 photographs and step-by-step instruction in two of the most influential and powerful training systems ever handed down: Shipalohanshou/18 Methods of the Enlightened Ones and Yijinjing/Muscle-Sinew Changing. It offers integrated training for those who wish to do the work of improving cerebral functions, coming to full understanding of the human experience, and maintaining multi-level health. It is based on the training methods from ancient India and China, as experienced by the founder of Chan/Zen Buddhism, Bodhidharma (Tamo) as he grew into adulthood and spiritual maturity. The Patriarch of Zen was considered a dangerous rebel by the status quo, and for good reason: his approach to human development rejected authority outside of oneself, including scripture and officials. Officials/Intellectuals within the Buddhist hierarchy have always had a hard time with Tamo's methods of direct pointing.
Book Synopsis Our Purpose in Speaking by : William Orem
Download or read book Our Purpose in Speaking written by William Orem and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this debut poetry collection by an award-winning fiction writer, the longing for God and the poignancy of family life echo each other’s music. The traditional forms of sonnet, sestina, and villanelle punctuate more modern verse forms, this combination being only one of the strands binding past and present. Many of these poems may be read as confessions—of joy, of hurtfulness given or received, of awe at the inescapable reality of love. This volume comprises spiritual writing that remains firmly of this world, part apostasy, part song, reaching out for meaning from both the shifting landscape of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay and the interior places of the heart.

The background is Haiti, beautiful and unnerving. Underneath the lush poetic description of the island lies a terror that breaks out in the unpredictability of social and political unrest. Orem's characters -- Haitians, foreign journalists, nurses, aide workers, priests and missionaries -- attempt to keep their souls intact in the face of extreme cruelty and chaos. Orem has written a powerful and unforgettable portrait of "Ayiti" in the times before the overthrow of Duvalier. Book jacket.
