Book excerpt: This book describes for the first time the complexity of the Northeastern Transbaikalia province of Russia. This province is one of the largest Early Proterozoic metallogenic provinces on Earth. It comprises three extra large deposits: Cu-sandstones Udokan, Fe-Ti-V and Cu-PGE Chiney, and REE Katugin. This book is a research study and includes geological, mineralogical, and geochemical data obtained by the authors from 30 field trips in the region, using XRF, ICP-MS, La-ICP-MS, EPMA, and the study of Sr, Nd, U-Pb isotopes in rocks and minerals. It demonstrates the complicated origin of Cu deposits comprising 50 Mt copper concentrated in sedimentary and magmatic rocks in this area.

Book excerpt: This book addresses fundamental problems in the evolution of magmatic and ore-forming processes in the Noril’sk area of northern Central Siberia. Based on data on the geology and geochemistry of rocks, obtained by the author in the course of fieldworks and new analytical studies (applying XRF, ICP-MS, microprobe analysis, ion-probe analysis and studying melt and fluid inclusions in olivine, as well as stable and radiogenic isotopes in the rocks), it was proposed a new scheme for the evolution of magmatism, including two episodes: rift and trap per se. The ultramafic-mafic massifs are classified into three geochemical types, the most important of which (the ore-bearing Noril’sk type) was formed in post-Nadezhdinsky time as an independent pulse of magmatic activity. The primary melts for ore-bearing intrusions had tholeiitic composition with elevated MgO (8 wt%) and low volatile contents (data form melt inclusions in olivine and pyroxenes, in combination with numerical simulations using the COMAGMAT program package). The assimilation of host rocks by the parental melts was studied in the contact zones of the Maslovsky and Talnakh intrusions. It was shown that it had taken place only in narrow zones (about 1-2 m) and did not played sufficient role in ore formation. It was suggested that the source of the material was lower crustal rocks in long-lived rift zones, where sulfides accumulated in several stages. The book offers a valuable resource for specialists in the geology of ore deposits and petrology, as well as for advanced Geology students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a selection of papers resulting from the INTAS Project 93-1783 "Ore-bearing granites of Eurasia: Anatomy and mag-matic-hydrothermal mechanisms of ore deposition" (INTAS = International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the New Independent States of the Former Soviet Union). It is the second monograph from this project, after our 1996 publication of "Granite-Related Ore Deposits of Central Kazakhstan and Adjacent Areas" (Shatov et al, 1996). The monograph contains 19 contributions of which 14 papers provide regional overviews on a number of important granite and ore provinces (northern and central Kazakhstan, Urals, Mongolia, Caucasus, Siberia, Yakutia, Pamirs). Five other papers are on general aspects of granite magmatism (geophysics, metasomatic zoning, volatile composition, petrogenetic tracing). An introductory paper compiles hitherto unavailable data on ore resources, mining production, uses, and applications for more than one hundred major granite-related rare-metal ore deposits of the former Soviet Union. Figure 1 illustrates the location of those areas treated in this volume. There are a number of significant rare-metal granite areas which are not covered by review papers. These gaps result from the fact that our INTAS project cooperation could only reach a limited number of FSU research groups, and that several papers submitted could not be accepted for publication. This volume provides a first and hitherto unavailable overview of the geology and metallogeny of major granite-related rare-metal deposits of Russia and adjacent countries. The papers may be used as astarting point for those interested in a particular area. The publication will be useful to the mineral exploration and mining community, and to all geoscientists interested in granite-related metallogeny.

Book excerpt: The basis of this investigation is the petrographic and geochemical understanding of principal igneous rock types of the Noril’sk region, in order to demonstrate that these data provide unique and self-evident solutions to the problems of petrogenesis and mineralization. The results of the investigations are presented in two volumes: the first includes mainly text and the second contains illustrations. In the first volume, the state of the main problems of the genesis of igneous rocks with reference to Traps and related ore deposits is discussed, as well as short petrological descriptions of igneous complexes in the region, the mineral and geochemical diversity of the rocks, and aspects of the differentiation of basaltic melts and mineralization are described. Taking into account the vast number of publications on the petrology of Traps of the Noril’sk region, primary attention in the monograph is given to earlier unknown phenomena, as well as other aspects that are of great importance for solving genetic problems. Some exotic geologic targets such as the Mikchandinsky differentiated cover, the magnetite lava flow of the Putorana Plateau, the magmatogenic breccia of Kharaelakh and others are described in detail. The second volume contains an atlas of Rock Indications of igneous rock-types; formally identified reference rocks from all igneous complexes of the region, as well as photographs of thin sections of typical rocks and analytical tables of rocks and minerals from the key sections of sedimentary units and intrusions. Each rock type has been geochemically and petrographically analysed thereby providing a formal identity, complete with a photograph of the thin section. Photomicrographs of the rocks in this book will be a useful aid in visualizing the diversity of rock types in the Traps; each photograph reflecting a unique combination of minerals.

Book excerpt: "Precambrian Ore Deposits of the East European and Siberian Cratons" is a sequel to "Precambrian Geology of the USSR" published in 1993 (English edition), in which the main emphasis was on the stratigraphy, magmatism and metamorphism of Precambrian assemblages in both ancient cratons (East European and Siberian) as well as in Phanerozoic fold belts and mobile regions. Mineral deposits associated with Precambrian structures were mentioned only in passing, since space restrictions in the earlier work did not allow even a brief outline of major deposits. The present book fills that gap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Dazzling Russian travelogue from the bestselling author of Great Plains In his astonishing new work, Ian Frazier, one of our greatest and most entertaining storytellers, trains his perceptive, generous eye on Siberia, the storied expanse of Asiatic Russia whose grim renown is but one explanation among hundreds for the region's fascinating, enduring appeal. In Travels in Siberia, Frazier reveals Siberia's role in history—its science, economics, and politics—with great passion and enthusiasm, ensuring that we'll never think about it in the same way again. With great empathy and epic sweep, Frazier tells the stories of Siberia's most famous exiles, from the well-known—Dostoyevsky, Lenin (twice), Stalin (numerous times)—to the lesser known (like Natalie Lopukhin, banished by the empress for copying her dresses) to those who experienced unimaginable suffering in Siberian camps under the Soviet regime, forever immortalized by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in The Gulag Archipelago. Travels in Siberia is also a unique chronicle of Russia since the end of the Soviet Union, a personal account of adventures among Russian friends and acquaintances, and, above all, a unique, captivating, totally Frazierian take on what he calls the "amazingness" of Russia—a country that, for all its tragic history, somehow still manages to be funny. Travels in Siberia will undoubtedly take its place as one of the twenty-first century's indispensable contributions to the travel-writing genre.

Book excerpt: The book (Special Issue) presents impressive new results related to a wide spectrum of occurrences of platinum-group minerals (PGM) and natural compounds enriched in platinum-group elements (PGE), which are associated with various complexes and deposits, such as Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes, layered intrusions and placers. The geographical locations of the involved deposits and complexes include, on a truly international scale, different areas of the Urals, Western and Eastern Sayans and Gornaya Shoria in Siberia, Southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt in China, Northern Michigan, USA, South Africa and Zimbabwe, etc. Of particular interest is the first description of a new species of PGM, thalhammerite (approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association), which is a new species of palladium-silver sulfobismuthide discovered in the Noril’sk region of Russia. Additionally, comprehensive reviews, on compositional variations in Pt–Fe alloy minerals and processes of transformations of PGM in exogenic environments, are presented which will also attract attention from international readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary growth of the computer and semiconductor industries and the increasing consumption of indium in these technologies in recent years have placed major constraints on current and future reserves of this metal. In the past, geoscientists have noticed the occurrence of indium in a large variety of ore de posits and detailed geochemical and mineralogical work is available for a few ex amples. However, despite the current technological interest, there is no compre hensive textbook that deals with all aspects of indium mineralization and economics. The present study attempts to develop a general metallogenic concept for indium in identifying the essential enrichment processes and their economic significance. The study 'Indium Geology, Mineralogy, and Economics' was commissioned and funded by the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Re sources (BGR Hannover) and is a contribution to the research program 'BGR 2000 - Raw Materials with Short Lifetime Reserves'. This program focuses on raw materials with known reserves confined to the next 20-25 years at static de mand. The future availability of reserves is usually estimated by dividing the known reserves by the current annual consumption. In fact, lifetimes of reserves are inappropriate measures because they depend on many parameters and there fore represent a "snapshot" of a dynamic system. In order to provide a sustainable use of raw materials with short lifetime reserves, a significantly higher amount of innovation is needed compared to raw materials with long lifetime reserves.
