Since the growth on these assessments are used in calculating teachers and administrators' yearly job evaluations, the significance of these measures has never been higher. Teachers and administrators want to know if the time spent on measures such as reading fluency is worth the sacrifice in the instructional day, when this time could be spent on teaching state mandated standards. The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental correlational study was to examine the relationship of reading fluency, the predictor variable, and reading comprehension, the criterion variable, among third, fourth, and fifth grade students from a rural, Title 1 school district in southwest Georgia. A Pearson product moment correlation was used to answer the following research question: Is there a relationship between a third, fourth, or fifth grade student's oral reading fluency score, as measured by Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, and their reading comprehension score, as measured by Scholastic Reading Inventory? The results of this study have determined a strong positive correlation exists between reading fluency and reading comprehension in grades three, four, and five. The inclusion of Lexile as the measure for reading comprehension did not diminish the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension. Further research is needed using Lexile as the measure for reading comprehension to broaden the generalization of this study.

Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, casual-comparative study was to determine if there is a difference in reading fluency scores among students in grades kindergarten through second grade using the Istation reading program. The importance of the study focused on the link between student’s oral reading fluency and overall reading comprehension. This study focused on approximately 3,000 kindergarten through second grade students from a total of nine elementary schools in central North Carolina. Three schools were located in a rural area of the community, three from an urban area and three from a suburban area. The data from students beginning of year Istation scores and middle of year Istation scores were analyzed using an ANCOVA statistical comparison. The results for the first hypothesis showed that there was a significant difference between the rural group and suburban group and the rural group and urban group. However, there was not a significant difference between the urban and suburban groups. The results for the second hypothesis showed there was a significant difference between the rural group and suburban group and the rural group and urban group. However, there was not a significant difference between the urban and suburban groups. For the third and final hypothesis the null hypothesis was accepted. The conclusion from the study showed there to be a significant difference between a student’s school location and testing scores. Further recommendations include additional studies that could be conducted centering around comparing students’ mid-year scores to their end of year scores as well as locations in other areas of the United States to determine any correlations.

Book excerpt: Schools are under legislative pressure to ensure students make adequate progress each year, and therefore, must identify students in need of intervention at early grade levels. Educators use diagnostic tools to measure student progress, attempting to determine which children may be most at risk for future reading failure. The Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills is widely used for early identification of students who have risk factors. This study incorporated a quantitative, correlational, ex post facto design to examine the relationship between students third grade scores on the spring DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency assessment and their fifth grade Michigan Educational Assessment Program reading results. By examining the relationship between the DIBELS ORF assessment and the MEAP reading assessment, researchers can gain insight into the system many schools currently use to identify at risk students. The study analyzed data from 2,220 students enrolled in seven rural school districts participating in a Regional Data Initiative grant program. The research questions examined relationships, including the effect of gender and socioeconomic status, between DIBELS ORF scores in the spring of third grade and MEAP reading assessment scores in their third, fourth and fifth years. Data was examined using descriptive statistics, Linear Regression, Chi Square analysis and Hierarchal Liner Modeling. Findings revealed lower DIBELS ORF at third grade were predictive of lower MEAP reading scores. After controlling for the above mentioned effects, each increase in DIBELS ORF score at third grade was associated with about a .60 increase in normed MEAP scores. This means that students scoring lower on their third grade DIBELS ORF assessment are most at risk for scoring lower on their third grade state assessment. DIBLES ORF was also a significant predicator of the slope of student MEAP reading scores between third and fifth grade. These findings support the use of DIBELS ORF as a screener to help educators predict a student's future reading proficiency scores, and therefore can help inform decision when selecting the students in need of interventions.

Reading ability can be assessed through student achievement on Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) measures. This study investigated the effectiveness of using ORF measures to predict achievement on high stakes tests. Study participants included 312 students across four Title 1 elementary schools in a Southwestern United States school district utilizing the Response to Intervention (RTI) model. Participants' ORF scores from first through third grade years and their third grade standardized achievement test scores were collected. In addition, information regarding reading interventions was obtained. Pearson product-moment correlations were used to determine how ORF scores and specific reading skills were related. Correlations were also used to assess whether the ORF scores from the fall, winter, or spring were most related to high stakes test scores. Additionally, the difference between computer-based versus instructor-led interventions on predicting high stakes test scores was assessed. Results indicated that correlation coefficients were larger between ORF and reading comprehension scores than between ORF and basic reading skills. ORF scores from spring were more highly related to high stakes tests than other times of the year. Students' ORF scores were more strongly related to high stakes tests when in computer-based interventions compared to instructor-led interventions. In predicting third grade high stakes test scores, first grade ORF scores had the most variance for the non-intervention sample, while third grade ORF scores had the most variance for the intervention sample.

Book excerpt: The authors of this action research project report implemented oral reading fluency-based interventions for the purpose of improving students' reading comprehension. Six students in grade three, six students in grade five and six students in grade six participated in the study from Monday, August 27 through Friday, December 7, 2007. Researchers observed that in the targeted reading groups, deficiencies in any element of oral reading fluency were associated with reading comprehension problems. The teacher researchers used the following tools to document evidence; Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Oral Reading Fluency (ORF), which indicated that 50% of students at Site A and 83% of students at Site B were below benchmark score for oral reading fluency. The comprehension based assessment (Choose-A-Title) resulted in 61% of the students choosing the incorrect title. As a result of the student survey, it indicated that 17% of the students responded "almost never" when asked "I think others like my reading". Students' struggles with accuracy, rate, and prosody revealed deficiencies that inhibited the processing of meaning. The interventions implemented were three 20-minute weekly sessions consisting of one session of reader's theater activities including choral reading, echo reading, and poetry, and two sessions of partner reading during which student pairs engaged in repeated oral reading and reading along silently while listening as oral reading was modeled. Teachers are encouraged to model fluent reading illustrating proper rate and accuracy. Reading and rereading exercises such as reading with a model reader, choral reading, reader's theater, and partner reading can improve fluency (Vaughn & Linan-Thompson, 2004). As a result of the interventions, students demonstrated increased awareness of the three elements of oral reading fluency: accuracy, rate, and prosody. Students practiced self-monitoring these elements while participating in paired reading and cooperative learning groups. The post data revealed that there was a decrease in students' positive responses to "I read with expression and feeling". Thirty-three percent of students responded "almost always" on pre documentation and 28% on post documentation. The "usually" category declined from 50% to 44%. Students responded best to interventions that involved repeated reading in the form of rehearsal followed by performance, such as choral poetry reading and reader's theater. Students demonstrated engagement in the activities while becoming more realistic in self-evaluation. The study was conducted in a school district in northwestern North Carolina. The students in this study scored below benchmark on a Reading 3D End of Year Assessment and were nonproficient on the North Carolina end-of-grade reading test. As fluency is tied to reading comprehension, it is important that students have sufficient fluency and accuracy skills to read grade-level texts. -- The study used Reading 3D Beginning of Year, Middle of Year, and End of Year Assessments as well as comments from a teacher focus group and random student interviews. Mean fluency and accuracy rates were compared between the control group and intervention group, males and females, and third through fifth graders at each assessment period throughout the year. -- A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc along with simple effects were used in this study. The data from these analyses revealed little difference between the mean fluency and accuracy scores of the control groups verses the intervention groups.
