Book Synopsis Searching for a path out of distance fares by : Norman Kellermann
Download or read book Searching for a path out of distance fares written by Norman Kellermann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reconstructs the history of fare policy in the European passenger railway industry and integrates behavioural pricing theory into an agent-based simulation model for railway revenue management. The model is employed to conduct artificial experiments on fare innovations. It represents supply and demand on a transport market including car traffic and is calibrated with empirical data of an incumbent European railway. The model uses a combination of marketing concepts, dynamics in time and social interaction of consumers to analyse revenue effects of different pricing options. This book provides insights for readers interested in the commercial aspects of transportation history. Furthermore, it is directed at researchers interested in pricing theory and the simulation method. It is also a rich source of information for practitioners in the revenue management branches of transport enterprises.

Book Synopsis Transport Prices and Costs in Africa by : Supee Teravaninthorn
Download or read book Transport Prices and Costs in Africa written by Supee Teravaninthorn and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport prices for most African landlocked countries range from 15 to 20 percent of import costs. This is approximately two to three times more than in most developed countries. It is well known that weak infrastructure can account for low trade performance. Thus, it becomes necessary to understand what types of regional transport services operate in landlocked African nations and it is critical to identify the regulation disparities and provision anomalies that hurt infrastructure efficiency, even when the physical infrastructure, such as a road transport corridor, exists. Transport Prices and Costs in Africa analyzes the various reasons for poor transport performance seen widely throughout Africa and provides a compelling case for a number of national and regional reforms that are vital to the effort to address the underlying causes of high transport prices and costs and service unpredictability seen in Africa. The book will greatly help supervisory authorities throughout the region develop and implement a comprehensive transport policy that will facilitate long-term growth.

Book Synopsis Effects of Globalization on Developing Countries by : World Bank
Download or read book Effects of Globalization on Developing Countries written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1996 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This year's study focuses on the effects of globalization on developing countries and the growing divide between fast and slow-integrating economies. The pace of global economic integration continues to accelerate dramatically. In the ten years from 1985 to 1994, the ratio of world trade to GDP rose three times faster than during the previous decade. During this same ten-year period, foreign direct investment (FDI) doubled as a share of global GDP. Developing countries also participated extensively in the acceleration of global integration. A closer look, however, reveals sharp disparities between countries. Though developing countries in the aggregate kept pace with the world rate of trade integration, the ratio of trade to GDP actually fell in some 44 out of 93 developing countries in the last ten years. There were similar disparities in the distribution of FDI: two-thirds of total FDI went to just eight developing countries; half received little or none. This trend is likely to continue. Projections indicate that trade and investment will accelerate in those countries which open up to the global economy, and stay stagnant in those that do not. At the same time, there has never been a better time for developing countries to integrate. Projected generally favorable conditions in the global economy, including stable energy prices, low interest rates and inflation, and improved communications and transportation technology, have created an environment conducive to market liberalization. Moreover, traditional obstacles to developing country integration, such as high tariff barriers, are falling rapidly. Many developing countries in every part of the world have successfully pursued policies of greater openness to the global economy, and there is much to learn from their experience. The report documents the evidence, provides case study analyses, and makes recommendations about best-practice approaches to market liberalization, especially in the areas of trade and commodities. For many developing countries, successful globalization depends on fundamental economic reform, requiring difficult policy decisions that often lead to real short-term dislocation. These costs must be acknowledged from the outset, and the effects carefully taken into account in the design of the programs. But the costs are manageable. In fact, openness to external trade and investment is often the necessary first step to solid, sustainable economic development.
