Heating to 56°C for at least 30 minutes in a kiln or heating chamber (56/30) is the most common treatment used for lumber and is also an internationally accepted method to treat wood packaging in order to eradicate pests of concern. This time/temperature combination was originally developed to eradicate pinewood nematodes and their insect vectors. Questions have arisen in the marketplace about the efficacy of such treatment against fungal pests, and recently for those associated with mountain pine beetle-affected lodgepole pine. This project looked into the effectiveness of several time/temperature combinations, in particular whether 56/30 kills a selection of mountain pine beetle associated fungi including bluestain fungi (nine isolates), Ambrosiella fungi (three isolates) and sap-rot fungi (six isolates) ... Additionally, this project determined to what extent air-drying and wood aging reduced the viability of embedded fungi and if slow drying rendered the fungi more heat tolerant."--Document.
Book Synopsis Optimization of Gluing, Lay-up and Pressing for Mountain Pine Beetle Plywood by : Brad Wang
Download or read book Optimization of Gluing, Lay-up and Pressing for Mountain Pine Beetle Plywood written by Brad Wang and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is part of a series of research papers that explore the biological, social, and economic aspects of British Columbia's mountain pine beetle epidemic. This document reports on a project conducted to determine the impact of using mountain pine beetle (MPB)-attacked wood on plywood manufacturing processes and to implement the optimum processing parameters in mill production in order to increase value recovery and productivity. The specific objectives of the project were to investigate and quantify the effect of beetle-wood veneer on veneer visual and stress grading; the efffect of beetle-wood veneer on gluing, panel lay-up and gluebond performance; the effect of beetle-wood veneer on the plywood hot pressing process and resulting panel quality, stiffness, and strength; and the costs and benefits of adjusting manufacturing processes in a mill trial that transfers the technology.--Includes text from document.
Book Synopsis Chemical, Mechanical, and Durability Properties of Mountain Pine Beetle Infested Timber by : John F. Kadla
Download or read book Chemical, Mechanical, and Durability Properties of Mountain Pine Beetle Infested Timber written by John F. Kadla and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To mitigate the impact of the mountain pine beetle epidemic on the British Columbia forest products sector, an understanding of the relationship between wood quality and time since infestation is needed. The proposed research project deals with the chemical and mechanical properties of mountain pine beetle-infested wood at various stages of attack. Using dynamic mechanical (DMA), and morphological (X-ray) analyses, the effect of mountain pine beetle on various wood components was determined and related to chemical composition. This report looks into the impact of the mountain pine beetle on the British Columbia forests and the outcomes of the analyses used.--Includes text from document.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report highlights past delivery of the land-based programs and progress of mountain pine beetle research during 2003 & 2004 by the Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative, a six-year program established to address the mountain pine beetle epidemic in western Canada and to reduce the risk of future such epidemics. After an introduction on the epidemic and the Initiative, the report summarizes the accomplishments of the Private Forestlands Rehabilitation Program, the Federal Forestlands Rehabilitation Program (First Nations, National Parks, and Other Federal Forestlands components), and the research & development program (including research on ecology, forest economics, socio-economic processes & risk reduction). Finally, the next steps in the land-based and research & development programs are discussed.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the history of mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonous ponderosae Hopk.) outbreaks in British Columbia, including the outbreak in the mid 1980s that affected timber supply in the Quesnel Timber Supply Area, little was known about the post-mortality rate of deterioration of wood quality and quantity, and the rate of change in stand structure due to fall of dead trees. This study used dendrochronology to crossdate pine killed by mountain pine beetle to determine the exact year of mortality and to characterize decay and degradation in factors of wood quality and quantity over time.--Includes text from document.
