Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single source of information for researchers and professionals, Traffic Simulation and Data: Validation Methods and Applications offers a complete overview of traffic data collection, state estimation, calibration and validation for traffic modelling and simulation. It derives from the Multitude Project—a European Cost Action project that incorporates work packages defining traffic simulation practice and research; highway and network modeling; and synthesis, dissemination, and training. This book addresses the calibration and validation of traffic models, and introduces necessary frameworks and techniques. It also includes viable methods for sensitivity analyses, and incorporates relevant tools for application. The book begins with a brief summary of various data collection techniques that can be applied to collect different data types. It then showcases various data processing and enhancement techniques for improving the quality of collected data. It also introduces the techniques according to the type of estimation, for example microscopic data enhancement, traffic state estimation, feature extraction and parameter identification techniques, and origin–destination matrix estimation. The material discusses the measures of performance, data error and goodness of fit, and optimization algorithms. It also contains the sensitivity analyses of parameters in traffic models. Describes the various tasks of calibration and validation Considers the best use of available data Presents the sensitivity analysis method Discusses typical issues of data error in transportation system data and how these errors can impact simulation results Details various methodologies for data collection, sensitivity analysis, calibration, and validation Examines benefits that result from the application of these methods Traffic Simulation and Data: Validation Methods and Applications serves as a key resource for transport engineers and planners, researchers, and graduate students in transport engineering and planning.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Axle load spectra data, typically from permanent weigh-in-motion (WIM) stations, constitute the primary mechanistic-empirical (ME) traffic data input for accurate and optimal pavement design and analysis. However, due to the limited number of available permanent WIM stations (mostly located on interstate highways), most ME pavement designs rely on antiquated estimates, even for the 18-kip equivalent single axle loads (ESALs) that often result in un-optimized and costly designs and/or poor-performing pavement structures with increased maintenance costs or high construction costs due to overdesigning -- with high overall life-cycle costs. As a means to address these challenges, this study was initiated, among others, to (a) review the current state-of-the-art methodologies used for estimating ME traffic data inputs, (b) develop clustering algorithms for estimating site-specific ME traffic data, (c) explore the portable WIM as a supplement to the permanent WIM station data, and (d) develop and manage a Microsoft Access ME traffic data storage system (T-DSS). The scope of work included traffic data collection from numerous WIM stations and development of traffic data analysis macros and clustering algorithms. Key findings from the study indicated the following: (a) portable WIM is a cost-effective supplement for site-specific traffic data collection -- with proper installation and calibration, quality traffic data with an accuracy of up to 90% is attainable; (b) the developed WIM data analysis macros are satisfactorily able to compute and generate ME traffic inputs for both flexible and rigid (concrete) pavements; and (c) the developed clustering algorithms and macros constitute an ideal and rapid methodology for predicting and estimating ME traffic data inputs. Key recommendations are continued portable WIM data collection, particularly in West Texas and on farm-to-market (FM) roads, for population of the T-DSS and improved prediction accuracy of the clustering algorithms.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive and practical, Pavement Asset Management provides an essential resource for educators, students and those in public agencies and consultancies who are directly responsible for managing road and airport pavements. The book is comprehensive in the integration of activities that go into having safe and cost-effective pavements using the best technologies and management processes available. This is accomplished in seven major parts, and 42 component chapters, ranging from the evolution of pavement management to date requirements to determining needs and priority programming of rehabilitation and maintenance, followed by structural design and economic analysis, implementation of pavement management systems, basic features of working systems and finally by a part on looking ahead. The most current methodologies and practical applications of managing pavements are described in this one-of-a-kind book. Real world up-to-date examples are provided, as well as an extensive list of references for each part.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is preparing to implement the mechanistic-empirical pavement design methodology being developed under the National Cooperative Research Program's Project 1-37A, commonly referred to as the 2002 Pavement Design Guide (2002 Guide). The developers of the 2002 Guide have stated that transportation agencies in compliance with the Federal Highway Administration's Traffic Monitoring Guide will have the traffic data necessary to implement the new pavement design approach. The 2002 Guide is structured in a hierarchical manner with three pavement design levels. For Level 1 designs, all project-specific data will be collected, including axle load spectra information (and axle loadings by vehicle classification) and vehicle classification counts at the project location. For Level 2 designs, regional and project-specific data will be applied. For Level 3 designs, estimated project-specific and statewide average or default data will be used in the analysis. The purpose of this effort was to develop a plan to position VDOT to collect traffic and truck axle weight data to support Level 2 pavement designs. This report serves as the basis for implementing and maintaining the truck weigh program necessary for the new pavement design approach and provides data for the current pavement design process used in Virginia (i.e., the 1993 pavement design methodology of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials). To keep program costs at a minimum, the proposed traffic data program for pavement design takes advantage of the flexibility permitted in the Traffic Monitoring Guide and the availability of weigh-in-motion data from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Truck weight Groups 1 and 2, which consist of interstate and arterial roads, where the majority of truck loading occurs, are the first priority for implementation. A traffic data plan and a phased approach to implement the plan were proposed.

Book excerpt: The global response to COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of vigilance and preparedness for infectious diseases, particularly influenza. There is a need for more effective influenza vaccines and modern manufacturing technologies that are adaptable and scalable to meet demand during a pandemic. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines has demonstrated what is possible with extensive data sharing, researchers who have the necessary resources and novel technologies to conduct and apply their research, rolling review by regulators, and public-private partnerships. As demonstrated throughout the response to COVID-19, the process of research and development of novel vaccines can be significantly optimized when stakeholders are provided with the resources and technologies needed to support their response. Vaccine Research and Development to Advance Pandemic and Seasonal Influenza Preparedness and Response focuses on how to leverage the knowledge gained from the COVID-19 pandemic to optimize vaccine research and development (R&D) to support the prevention and control of seasonal and pandemic influenza. The committee's findings address four dimensions of vaccine R&D: (1) basic and translational science, (2) clinical science, (3) manufacturing science, and (4) regulatory science.
