Book excerpt: This book highlights the optimization of Nd: YAG Laser welding by using Taguchi method based GRA. The aim of this research is to optimize and predict Nd: YAG laser welding process parameters with multiple quality characteristics of economically important materials in industry through application of Taguchi method based Grey Relational Analysis as a DOE approach to design the experiments and optimize the welding operation. This was achieved by controlling selected welding parameters, such as, laser pulse width, pulse height, frequency, welding speed, shielding gas flow rate, shielding gas flow angle and focus position, and thereafter, to analyse the influence of these parameters on the weld bead geometry and the mechanical properties of the welds. The material was investigated in this work was AISI 304 SS. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) is also employed to determine the contribution of each control parameter on the welding quality characteristics. For each welded joint, the main effects and the interaction effects of the process parameters on the responses were discussed and presented graphically

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental investigations were carried out using pulsed SLS 200 Nd: YAG laser welding of ANSI 304 stainless steel plate to determine the optimal welding conditions. The weld characteristics like the depth, width and Heat Affected Zone are taken into consideration for the optimum weld. The parameters that are kept constant during the process are pulse duration, frequency, beam diameter, by changing the parameters in the laser weld like the feed rate, power and distance of the weld we can vary the weld characteristics. The welds were analyzed by optical microscope and tensile shear tests. The optimization of weld is also done by testing the weld strength using the MTS machine in which we can test the tensile strength of the weld. The finite element analysis model of the three-dimensional heat source for pulsed laser beam butt welding was analyzed in COMSOL and ANSYS. The results of finite element analysis were used to compare the results of experimental data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an intelligent, integrated, problem-independent method for multiresponse process optimization. In contrast to traditional approaches, the idea of this method is to provide a unique model for the optimization of various processes, without imposition of assumptions relating to the type of process, the type and number of process parameters and responses, or interdependences among them. The presented method for experimental design of processes with multiple correlated responses is composed of three modules: an expert system that selects the experimental plan based on the orthogonal arrays; the factor effects approach, which performs processing of experimental data based on Taguchi’s quality loss function and multivariate statistical methods; and process modeling and optimization based on artificial neural networks and metaheuristic optimization algorithms. The implementation is demonstrated using four case studies relating to high-tech industries and advanced, non-conventional processes.
