Book excerpt: With conventional oil and gas reservoirs declining, energy companies are constructing more complex wells to economically produce natural resources that were not accessible previously. Extended reach Offshore wells and horizontal unconventional land wells are just two examples of technologies developed to unlock challenging reserves. However, torque and drag in extended reach and horizontal wells with departures of ten thousand feet or more still constitute one of the main challenges and technical limitations for drilling. Offshore wells can experience high friction even with the use of rotary steerable systems. Additionally, directional land wells drilled with downhole steerable motor experience high friction because only the bit rotates while the rest of the string slides against the wellbore wall. This friction can produce complications such as low sliding and rotating rates of penetration, high tortuosity, poor hole cleaning, vibrations, premature downhole tools failure or bit damaging and connection back-offs. Additionally, it can stop the string from moving backwards or forwards and rotating, potentially ending up with an irreversibly stuck drillstring and a shorter-than-planned well. In this work, we try to understand the influence of different agents on friction behavior and mitigation in deviated and horizontal wells, and how these agents can be used most effectively while drilling to improve drilling performance and wellbore quality

Book excerpt: The petroleum industry in general has been dominated by engineers and production specialists. The upstream segment of the industry is dominated by drilling/completion engineers. Usually, neither of those disciplines have a great deal of training in the chemistry aspects of drilling and completing a well prior to its going on production. The chemistry of drilling fluids and completion fluids have a profound effect on the success of a well. For example, historically the drilling fluid costs to drill a well have averaged around 7% of the overall cost of the well, before completion. The successful delivery of up to 100% of that wellbore, in many cases may be attributable to the fluid used. Considered the "bible" of the industry, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids, first written by Walter Rogers in 1948, and updated on a regular basis thereafter, is a key tool to achieving successful delivery of the wellbore. In its Sixth Edition, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids has been updated and revised to incorporate new information on technology, economic, and political issues that have impacted the use of fluids to drill and complete oil and gas wells. With updated content on Completion Fluids and Reservoir Drilling Fluids, Health, Safety & Environment, Drilling Fluid Systems and Products, new fluid systems and additives from both chemical and engineering perspectives, Wellbore Stability, adding the new R&D on water-based muds, and with increased content on Equipment and Procedures for Evaluating Drilling Fluid Performance in light of the advent of digital technology and better manufacturing techniques, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids has been thoroughly updated to meet the drilling and completion engineer's needs. Explains a myriad of new products and fluid systems Cover the newest API/SI standards New R&D on water-based muds New emphases on Health, Safety & Environment New Chapter on waste management and disposal

Book excerpt: This open access book offers a timely guide to challenges and current practices to permanently plug and abandon hydrocarbon wells. With a focus on offshore North Sea, it analyzes the process of plug and abandonment of hydrocarbon wells through the establishment of permanent well barriers. It provides the reader with extensive knowledge on the type of barriers, their functioning and verification. It then discusses plug and abandonment methodologies, analyzing different types of permanent plugging materials. Last, it describes some tests for verifying the integrity and functionality of installed permanent barriers. The book offers a comprehensive reference guide to well plugging and abandonment (P&A) and well integrity testing. The book also presents new technologies that have been proposed to be used in plugging and abandoning of wells, which might be game-changing technologies, but they are still in laboratory or testing level. Given its scope, it addresses students and researchers in both academia and industry. It also provides information for engineers who work in petroleum industry and should be familiarized with P&A of hydrocarbon wells to reduce the time of P&A by considering it during well planning and construction.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hole cleaning efficiency is an important factor of consideration in the successful evaluation of any drilling operation. This is dependent on the ability of the drilling fluid to effectively remove cuttings from the bottom hole to the surface, which are affected by changes in the drilling fluid properties such as the density, pipe eccentricity, well bore geometry, well bore interactions with the external environment in the form of gas-cutting etc. This work examines the sources and effects of entrained gas on drilling fluid, borehole and hydraulic parameters and their respective impact on hole cleaning. A generalized mathematical equation was derived to predict the hole cleaning efficiency of low-viscosity non-dispersed mud systems at different rates of gas entrainment. Additionally, the total pump operating cost was investigated from the knowledge of the optimum horsepower output of the pump. A cost comparison was made between the Hydraulic Horsepower and Jet Impact Force methods of optimized drilling. From the analysis it was observed that entrained gas negatively impacts hole cleaning in comparison to a gas free system. Jet Impact Force was found to be a better tool for determining the pump operating cost and estimating the hole cleaning performance using the Carrying Capacity Index"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: "In today's competitive business environment, reducing operating cost means dollars to the bottom line. One way that a drilling company can reduce operating cost is by optimizing energy use at the mud pumps. The mud pumps are massive pieces of equipment that are the backbone of the cutting's removal system. Optimizing the hydraulics program is one way to reduce mud pump operating cost. Big hydraulics play an important role in the drilling process. The beneficial action of the fluid's cleaning the bottom hole and the bit teeth, and carrying particles into the annulus is well-established. A variety of hydraulic optimization designs are available, however, in this study the efficiency and cost effectiveness of two methods are compared: Jet Impact force and Hydraulic Horsepower. Both methods have a fundamental objective to maximize the available hydraulics to provide optimum cleaning but Jet Impact method optimizes drilling cost better than Hydraulic Horsepower"--Leaf iii.

From that reasons sand production must be monitored and kept within acceptable limits. Sand control problems in wells result from improper completion techniques or changes in reservoir properties. The idea is to provide support to the formation to prevent movement under stresses resulting from fluid flow from reservoir to well bore. That means that sand control often result with reduced well production. Control of sand production is achieved by: reducing drag forces (the cheapest and most effective method), mechanical sand bridging (screens, gravel packs) and increasing of formation strength (chemical consolidation). For open hole completions or with un-cemented slotted liners/screens sand failure will occur and must be predicted. Main problem is plugging. To combat well failures due to plugging and sand breakthrough Water-Packing or Shunt-Packing are used.
