Book excerpt: Oil palm trunk (OPT) is generated from the replantation of oil palm trees at every 25-30 years interval, left as troublesome waste as it becomes the source of infection to young oil palm trees. This OPT contains a high amount of ready-to-use sugar in the form of sap which can be directly fermented to the most fermentation products. The fermentation process for ethanol production from OPT sap was evaluated in order to produce larger amount of bioethanol. The feasibility of yeast S. cerevisiae to produce bioethanol from OPT sap was investigated along with the effect of different strains of S. cerevisiae and different pretreated mediums. It was proven that yeast S.cerevisiae was able to produce bioethanol even though the OPT sap undergoes less pretreatment compared to the previous works done by the other reseachers. The highest bioethanol yield and productivity had been obtained by using S. cerevisiae Kyokai no.7 in heat sterilized sap. The effects of temperature, initial pH, agitation rate, percentage inoculum and time of incubation were explored using 2-level full factorial design in order to find out the main factor that affecting bioethanol fermentation from the OPT sap. The factors of temperature, initial pH and agitation rate were chosen for optimization study based on the higher percentage contribution (>5 %) and lower p-values (

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biofuel is a renewable energy source produced from natural materials. The benefits of biofuels over traditional petroleum fuels include greater energy security, reduced environmental impact, foreign exchange savings, and socioeconomic issues related to the rural sector. The most common biofuels are produced from classic food crops that require high-quality agricultural land for growth. However, bioethanol can be produced from plentiful, domestic, cellulosic biomass resources such as herbaceous and woody plants, agricultural and forestry residues, and a large portion of municipal and industrial solid waste streams. There is also a growing interest in the use of vegetable oils for making biodiesel. “Biofuels: Securing the Planet’s Future Energy Needs” discusses the production of transportation fuels from biomass (such as wood, straw and even household waste) by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The book is an important text for students and researchers in energy engineering, as well as professional fuel engineers.

Book excerpt: This report demonstrates by computer simulation the economic advantages of extractive fermentation on an industrial scale compared to the best alternative technology currently available. The simulations were based on a plant capacity of 100 x 10 6 L/y of azeotropic ethanol. The simulation results were verified with a fully integrated, computer controlled extractive fermentation process demonstration unit based around a 7 L fermentor operated with a synthetic glucose medium and using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The system was also operated with natural substrates (blackstrap molasses and grain hydrolyzate). Preliminary tests with the organism Zymomonas mobilis were also carried out under extractive fermentation conditions.

Book excerpt: Converting biomass to biofuels involves hydrolyzing cellulose to sugars using cost-intensive commercial enzymes – an expensive step that makes large-scale production economically non-viable. As such, there is a need for low-cost bioprocessing. This book critically evaluates the available bioprocessing technologies for various biofuels, and presents the latest research in the field. It also highlights the recent developments, current challenges and viable alternative approaches to reduce the overall cost of producing biofuels.

Book excerpt: I belie ve that the book would provide an overview of the recent developments in the domain of yeast research with some new ideas, which could serve as an inspiration and challenge for researchers in this field. Ne w Delhi Prof. Asis Datta Dec. 24, 2007 F ormer Vice-chancellor, JNU Director, NCPGR (New Delhi) Pr eface Yeasts are eukaryotic unicellular microfungi that are widely distributed in the natural environments. Although yeasts are not as ubiquitous as bacteria in the na- ral environments, they have been isolated from terrestrial, aquatic and atmospheric environments. Yeast communities have been found in association with plants, a- mals and insects. Several species of yeasts have also been isolated from specialized or extreme environments like those with low water potential (e. g. high sugar/salt concentrations), low temperature (e. g. yeasts isolated from Antarctica), and low oxygen availability (e. g. intestinal tracts of animals). Around 1500 species of yeasts belonging to over 100 genera have been described so far. It is estimated that only 1% of the extant yeasts on earth have been described till date. Therefore, global efforts are underway to recover new yeast species from a variety of normal and extreme environments. Yeasts play an important role in food chains, and carbon, nitrogen and sulphur cycles. Yeasts can be genetically manipulated by hybridization, mutation, rare m- ing, cytoduction, spheroplast fusion, single chromosomal transfer and transfor- tion using recombinant technology. Book excerpt: This is the second edition of the text "Bioreaction Engineering Principles" by Jens Nielsen and John Villadsen, originally published in 1994 by Plenum Press (now part of Kluwer). Time runs fast in Biotechnology, and when Kluwer Plenum stopped reprinting the first edition and asked us to make a second, revised edition we happily accepted. A text on bioreactions written in the early 1990's will not reflect the enormous development of experimental as well as theoretical aspects of cellular reactions during the past decade. In the preface to the first edition we admitted to be newcomers in the field. One of us (JV) has had 10 more years of job training in biotechnology, and the younger author (IN) has now received international recognition for his work with the hottest topics of "modem" biotechnology. Furthermore we are happy to have induced Gunnar Liden, professor of chemical reaction engineering at our sister university in Lund, Sweden to join us as co-author of the second edition. His contribution, especially on the chemical engineering aspects of "real" bioreactors has been of the greatest value. Chapter 8 of the present edition is largely unchanged from the first edition. We wish to thank professor Martin Hjortso from LSU for his substantial help with this chapter.

Book excerpt: Due to the increasing demand for new fuels that are economically attractive, and as part of the quest for energy alternatives to replace carbon-based fuels, the purification of ethanol plays a key role. Bioethanol is an environmentally-friendly fuel with less greenhouse gases emissions than gasoline, but with similar energy power. Nevertheless the large-scale production of bioethanol fuel requires energy demanding distillation steps to concentrate the diluted streams from the fermentation step and to overcome the azeotropic behavior of the ethanol-water mixture. This work presents the design and optimization of a dehydration process for ethanol, using two separation sequences: a conventional arrangement using distillation and extractive distillation and an alternative arrangement based on liquid-liquid extraction and extractive distillation. Moreover, different solvents were optimized simultaneously in the liquid-liquid extraction column, while ethylene glycol was used as extractive agent in the extractive distillation (ED). Both sequences were optimized using a stochastic global optimization algorithm of differential evolution (DE) coupled to rigorous Aspen Plus simulations. The economic feasibility of utilities for the two configurations was studied by changing the ethanol/water composition in the analyzed feed stream. The results demonstrate significant savings around 20% in total annual cost when the alternative arrangement is used.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the optimum conditions for producing bioethanol using oil palm frond juice. Bioethanol has been gaining much interest recently in terms of research and development. Since there are various factors such as rising oil price, environmental issues and high rate consumption of fossil fuel, the global demand for bioethanol has shown a remarkable increase. Oil palm frond is known to be the most generated oil palm biomass annually. OPF is obtained during pruning for harvesting fresh fruit bunch, and the juice can be produced by pressing the fresh OPF using the conventional sugarcane pressing machine. The OPF juice contains higher glucose content, which is about 70% of the total free sugar. Hence, it has a high potential to be the carbon source for producing bioethanol. The parameters investigated in this research work are temperature, pH and agitation speed. Bioethanol was produced from oil palm frond juice by fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The ethanol concentration from the fermentation sample was analysed using HPLC. Using the ethanol concentration obtained from HPLC analysis, the optimum condition for the production of bioethanol was determined using the Response Surface Methodology with the aid of Design Expert software. The results revealed that, a maximum bioethanol concentration of 22.93 g/L can be obtained at the following optimum conditions : temperature of 32oC, pH 6 and agitation speed of 80 rpm. The validation result revealed that at this optimum condition, a bioethanol yield of 30.1% , which is close to the predicted value, can be obtained.
