Book Synopsis An Integrated, Optimization-Based Approach to the Design and Control of Large Space Structures by : Elijah Polak
Download or read book An Integrated, Optimization-Based Approach to the Design and Control of Large Space Structures written by Elijah Polak and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was aimed at laying the groundwork for a long term project on the integrated, optimization-based design of large, flexible structures and their control systems. Research was carried out in four areas: (1) modeling the dynamic behavior of simple flexible structures; (2) development of a theory of nondifferentiable optimization algorithms for the solution of problems with max function type inequality constraints; (3) exploraton of the use of optimization in optimization-based design of large, flexible structures and their control systems; and (4) interactive software for optimization-based control system design.
Book Synopsis Modeling, Analysis, and Optimization Issues for Large Space Structures by :
Download or read book Modeling, Analysis, and Optimization Issues for Large Space Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document contains the proceedings of the Air Force/NASA Workshop on Modeling, Analysis, and Optimization Issues for Large Space Structures held in Williamsburg, Virginia, May 13-14 1982. The theme of the workshop was modeling, analysis, and optimization of large space structures, including structure control interaction. Speakers were drawn primarily from industry, with participation from universities and government. The workshop was organized into three sessions: mathematical modeling, analysis methodology, and optimization for controllability. Results of the workshop were discussed in a final session. The workshop presentations ranged over many topics in large space structures, including structure-control interaction, structural and structural dynamics modeling, thermal analysis, testing, design, and optimization. The interdisciplinary area of structure-control interaction, which is a challenge to analysts, designers, and test engineers, was clearly emphasized. Not addressed in the workshop was the important subject of structural deployment.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is intended to provide a snapshot of the status and opportunities for advan cement in the technologies of dynamics and control oflarge flexible spacecraft structures. It is a reflection ofthe serious dialog and assessments going on all over the world, across a wide variety of scientific and technical disciplines, as we contemplate the next major milestone in mankind's romance with space: the transition from exploration and experimentation to commercial and defense exploitation. This exploitation is already in full swing in the space communications area. Both military and civilian objectives are being pursued with increasingly more sophisticated systems such as large antenna reflectors with active shape control. Both the NATO and Warsaw pact alliances are pursuing permanent space stations in orbit: large structural systems whose development calls for in-situ fabrication and/or assembly and whose operation will demand innovations in controls technology. The last ten years have witnessed a fairly brisk research activity in the dynamics and control oflarge space structures in orderto establish a technology base forthe development of advanced spacecraft systems envisioned for the future. They have spanned a wide spectrum of activity from fundamental methods development to systems concept studies and laboratory experimentation and demonstrations. Some flight experiments have also been conducted for various purposes such as the characterization of the space enviroment, durability of materials and devices in that environment, assembly and repair operations, and the dynamic behavior of flexible structures. It is this last area that has prompted this monogram.
Book Synopsis Multivariable Methods for the Design, Identification and Control of Large Space Structures. Volume 2. Optimal by :
Download or read book Multivariable Methods for the Design, Identification and Control of Large Space Structures. Volume 2. Optimal written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report investigates the integrated control/structure design optimization problem for large flexible structures subject to stochastic disturbance forces. The full state feedback control of truss type structures is considered. The problem is formulated as a mathematical programming problem, and solved using a sequential approximations solution technique along with a scaling procedure. Due to the special nature of full state feedback control, it is shown that the controller can be assumed to be an LQR controller, where the control and state weightings are Lagrange multipliers from the mathematical programming optimality conditions. The design space is therefore effectively reduced to the truss element cross-sectional areas and these Lagrange multipliers, significantly reducing the computational effort required for solution. In this report, the solution algorithm is applied to the DRAPER I tetrahedral truss structure. Keywords: Large space structures; Multivariable control; Control structure interaction.
Book Synopsis Multidisciplinary Optimization of Controlled Space Structures with Global Sensitivity Equations by : National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa

This book was released on 2020-07-06 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new method for the preliminary design of controlled space structures is presented. The method coordinates standard finite element structural analysis, multivariable controls, and nonlinear programming codes and allows simultaneous optimization of the structures and control systems of a spacecraft. Global sensitivity equations are a key feature of this method. The preliminary design of a generic geostationary platform is used to demonstrate the multidisciplinary optimization method. Fifteen design variables are used to optimize truss member sizes and feedback gain values. The goal is to reduce the total mass of the structure and the vibration control system while satisfying constraints on vibration decay rate. Incorporating the nonnegligible mass of actuators causes an essential coupling between structural design variables and control design variables. The solution of the demonstration problem is an important step toward a comprehensive preliminary design capability for structures and control systems. Use of global sensitivity equations helps solve optimization problems that have a large number of design variables and a high degree of coupling between disciplines.
