These factors include, but are not limited to the propulsion system, aerodynamic effects, rotation of the earth, oblateness, and gravity. A trajectory simulation that considers these different factors is generated by a code developed for this thesis titled Trajectories for Heavy-lift Evaluation and Optimization (THEO). THEO is a validated trajectory simulation code with the ability to model numerous launch configurations. THEO also has the capability to provide the means for an optimization objective. Optimization of a launch vehicle can be specified in terms of many different variables. For a heavy lift launch vehicle in this thesis, the goal of optimization is to minimize Gross Lift Off Weight (GLOW). THEO provides the capability to optimize by simulating hundreds of thousands of trajectories for a single configuration through the variation of preset independent variables. The sheer volume of these trajectories provides the means to locate configurations that minimize GLOW. Optimization can also be performed by determining the minimum amount of energy necessary to reach target burnout conditions. The energy requirements are then correlated to the propellant mass which can be used to estimate GLOW. This thesis first discusses the validation of THEO as a simulation program and the properties associated with accurately modeling a trajectory. It then relates how THEO and other developed tools can be utilized to determine a configuration that is optimized to minimize GLOW to orbit for adaptable payload sizes.

In addition to flexible and responsive spacelift, a reduction in the cost per launch of space launch vehicles is also desirable. For this purpose, an investigation of the design optimization of space launch vehicles has been conducted.

Book excerpt: The objective was to design both a Personnel Launch System (PLS) and a family of Heavy Lift Launch Vehicles (FHLLVs) that provide low cost and efficient operation in missions not suited for the Shuttle. The PLS vehicle is designed primarily for space station crew rotation and emergency crew return. The final design of the PLS vehicle and its interior is given. The mission of the FHLLVs is to place large, massive payloads into Earth orbit with payload flexibility being considered foremost in the design. The final design of three launch vehicles was found to yield a payload capacity range from 20 to 200 mt. These designs include the use of multistaged, high thrust liquid engines mounted on the core stages of the rocket. Book excerpt: NASA's Advanced Engineering Environment (AEE) is a research and development program that will improve collaboration among design engineers for launch vehicle conceptual design and provide the infrastructure (methods and framework) necessary to enable that environment. In this paper, three major technical challenges facing the AEE program are identified, and three specific design problems are selected to demonstrate how advanced methods can improve current design activities. References are made to studies that demonstrate these design problems and methods, and these studies will provide the detailed information and check cases to support incorporation of these methods into the AEE. This paper provides background and terminology for discussing the launch vehicle conceptual design problem so that the diverse AEE user community can participate in prioritizing the AEE development effort.Rowell, Lawrence F. and Korte, John J.Langley Research CenterLAUNCH VEHICLES; SYSTEMS ENGINEERING; DESIGN OPTIMIZATION; SPACE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM; RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT; MATHEMATICAL MODELS; STOCHASTIC PROCESSES; GENETIC ALGORITHMS; EXPERIMENT DESIGN; CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT

Book excerpt: Like all organizations, the Air Force is interested in conducting its vehicle studies as quickly as possible with as high fidelity an analysis as is feasible and with a proven, repeatable design and analysis process. This research is in support of an approach formulated by engineers at Wright Patterson Air Force Base who seek to integrate design and analysis tools into a collaborative, network-distributed design environment. The benefits of using an integrated design environment to reduce the time and potential errors associated with the transfer of data between design and analysis codes are well documented. This research presents the integration of an initial set of space access and future strike vehicle analysis codes designed to improve the entire conceptual-level design process and documents the advantages of using the tools in a collaborative, network-distributed environment. This paper focuses on the design environment including geometry modeling, object design, discipline interactions, and design tools built for this effort including weight, propulsion, and trajectory analysis.

Sustainability is defined more precisely, as are the counterbalancing dynamics of adaptability and architectural lock-in. Second, cases are studied to understand how the previously defined concepts have played out in practice. The evolution of system architectures leading to the development of the last heavy lift vehicle, Saturn V, is analyzed; and the problem of reducing cost in the modern launch industry is examined from a political-economic perspective. Finally, insights from these studies together with recent advances in engineering economy are used to develop quantitative models to compare architectures. An analytic model is created to evaluate mission cost and risk as a function of vehicle capacity and in-space requirements. A discrete model based on real-options thinking is developed to compare Space Shuttle-derived and Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) derived architectures.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines the launch vehicle options available to place a heavy payload, 10 tons, into a low-earth-orbit. The study provides the current status of the space launch vehicle market for heavy lift launchers. The following launchers are looked at in detail: Titan 3, Proton, Energia, Long March 3, Ariane 5, and the H-2. Vehicle design history and launch record are examined. Each launcher is then examined and broken down by stages, including the payload sections. A typical launch sequence is included for each vehicle. Finally, the cost of the various launchers is examined. Conclusions regarding the future need of heavy lift launch vehicles and a look at the current political environment is made.

Book excerpt: Sections 10 to 13 of the Advanced Transportation System Studies final report are included in this volume. Section 10 contains a copy of an executive summary that was prepared by Lockheed Space Operations Company (LSOC) to document their support to the TA-2 contract during the first-year period of performance of the contract, May 1992 through May 1993. LSOC participated on the TA-2 contract as part of the concurrent engineering launch system definition team, and provided outstanding heavy lift launch vehicle (HLLV) ground operations requirements and concept assessments for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company (LMSC) through an intercompany work transfer as well as providing specific HLLV ground operations assessments at the direction of NASA KSC through KSC funding that was routed to the TA-2 contract. Section 11 contains a copy of a vehicle-independent, launch system health management requirements assessment. The purpose of the assessment was to define both health management requirements and the associated interfaces between a generic advanced transportation system launch vehicle and all related elements of the entire transportation system, including the ground segment. Section 12 presents the major TA-2 presentations provided to summarize the significant results and conclusions that were developed over the course of the contract. Finally, Section 13 presents the design and assessment report on the first lunar outpost heavy lift launch vehicle.
