Book Synopsis Arsenic in Drinking Water by : National Research Council
Download or read book Arsenic in Drinking Water written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-11-26 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having safe drinking water is important to all Americans. The Environmental Protection Agency's decision in the summer of 2001 to delay implementing a new, more stringent standard for the maximum allowable level for arsenic in drinking water generated a great deal of criticism and controversy. Ultimately at issue were newer data on arsenic beyond those that had been examined in a 1999 National Research Council report. EPA asked the National Research Council for an evaluation of the new data available. The committee's analyses and conclusions are presented in Arsenic in Drinking Water: 2001 Update. New epidemiological studies are critically evaluated, as are new experimental data that provide information on how and at what level arsenic in drinking water can lead to cancer. The report's findings are consistent with those of the 1999 report that found high risks of cancer at the previous federal standard of 50 parts per billion. In fact, the new report concludes that men and women who consume water containing 3 parts per billion of arsenic daily have about a 1 in 1,000 increased risk of developing bladder or lung cancer during their lifetime.

Book Synopsis The New Microbiology by : Pascale Cossart
Download or read book The New Microbiology written by Pascale Cossart and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbiology has undergone radical changes over the past few decades, ushering in an exciting new era in science. In The New Microbiology, Pascale Cossart tells a splendid story about the revolution in microbiology, especially in bacteriology. This story has wide-ranging implications for human health and medicine, agriculture, environmental science, and our understanding of evolution. The revolution results from the powerful tools of molecular and cellular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics, which have yielded amazing discoveries, from entire genome sequences to video of bacteria invading host cells. This book is for both scientists and especially nonscientists who would like to learn more about the extraordinary world of bacteria. Dr. Cossart's overview of the field of microbiology research, from infectious disease history to the ongoing scientific revolution resulting from CRISPR technologies, is presented in four parts. New concepts in microbiology introduces the world of bacteria and some recent discoveries about how they live, such as the role of regulatory RNAs including riboswitches, the CRISPR defense system, and resistance to antibiotics. Sociomicrobiology: the social lives of bacteria helps us see the new paradigm by which scientists view bacteria as highly social creatures that communicate in many ways, for example in the assemblies that reside in our intestine or in the environment. The biology of infections reviews some of history's worst epidemics and describes current and emerging infectious diseases, the organisms that cause them, and how they produce an infection. Bacteria as tools introduces us to molecules derived from microbes that scientists have harnessed in the service of research and medicine, including the CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing technology. The New Microbiology takes us on a journey through a remarkable revolution in science that is occurring here and now.
Book Synopsis Time and Memory by : Christoph Hoerl
Download or read book Time and Memory written by Christoph Hoerl and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capacity to represent and think about time, and the capacity to recollect the past are two of the most fundamental and least understood aspects of human cognition and consciousness. This book throws new light on central issues in the study of the mind by uniting, for the first time, psychological and philosophical approaches dealing with the connection between temporal representation and memory. Fifteen specially written essays by leading psychologists and philosophers investigate the way in which time is represented in memory, and the role memory plays in our ability to reasonabout time. They offer insights into current theories of memory processes and of the mechanisms and cognitive abilities underlying temporal judgements, and draw out fundamental issues concerning the phenomenology and epistemology of memory and our understanding of time. The chapters are arrangedinto four sections, each focused on one area of current research: I Keeping Track of Time, and Temporal Representation; II Memory, Awareness and the Past; III Memory and Experience; IV Knowledge and the Past: The Epistemology and Metaphysics of Time. A general introduction gives an overview of thetopics discussed and makes explicit central themes which unify the different philosophical and psychological approaches.

Book Synopsis ENT Emergencies by : John L. Dornhoffer
Download or read book ENT Emergencies written by John L. Dornhoffer and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The head and neck, as an anatomical cross roads of multiple functions critical to human well being, including respiration, digestion, sensation, communication, and aesthetics, presents disorders that acutely threaten these vital systems. As with any emergency situation, information devoted to the priorities of management: airway, breathing, circulation, and disability are presented for otolaryngic emergencies that may manifest at each of these levels in the form of acute airway obstruction, epistaxis, and the gamut of traumatic, infectious, and inflammatory disorders that affect special sensation, neurologic function, and cosmesis. Discussed in this issue is the use of modalities such as endoscopy, optics, and radiologic imaging as a means to earlier diagnosis, detailed anatomic assessment, and minimally invasive surgery used in the emergency setting. This text strives to keep practitioners at the forefront in the management of ENT emergencies. Experts in otolaryngology describe those conditions that require urgent evaluation and treatment but are also relatively common. Where evidence-based medicine is lacking, comprehensive reviews of the controversies are presented along with logical treatment algorithms based on clinical expertise. This issue of Otolaryngologic Clinics should be highly relevant to the otolaryngologist as well as the general practitioner and emergency physician.
