En effet, leur utilisation judicieuse en production porcine peut représenter un atout économique important. Toutefois, l'usage d'ingrédients alternatifs est limité dans les aliments pour porcs, notamment à cause leur effet parfois négatif sur la qualité de la carcasse ainsi que de leur teneur élevée en fibres alimentaires, peu valorisées par les monogastriques. Ce projet avait comme objectif de mieux comprendre l'impact de l'usage des ingrédients alternatifs disponibles dans l'Est du Canada afin de diminuer les coûts d'alimentation, sans modifier les performances de croissance chez le porc. Plus précisément, le projet visait à évaluer l'impact de différents types de fibres (solubles et insolubles) et de la supplémentation en xylanase, une enzyme exogène, sur la digestibilité iléale apparente des composants nutritionnels ainsi que sur les performances de croissance et la composition corporelle chez le porc en croissance-finition. Pour ce faire, deux expérimentations ont été réalisées. La première était un essai de digestibilité réalisé à l'aide de porcs canulés chez lesquels la digestibilité iléale apparente a été mesurée pour différents aliments variant en leur teneur et leur type de fibres, et selon l'addition ou non de xylanase. La seconde expérimentation consistait en un essai de croissance chez le porc en finition afin de mesurer ces mêmes traitements sur les performances de croissance, la composition corporelle et la qualité du gras. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les niveaux élevés de fibres alimentaires utilisés n'ont pas eu d'effets majeurs sur la digestibilité iléale apparente des nutriments et de l'énergie, sur la composition corporelle et sur les performances de croissance des animaux. De plus, l'ajout de xylanase dans les aliments a eu peu d'effets sur les critères mesurés.

The new system is mainly built from meta-analyses of large data bases, and modelling. The dietary supply model accounts for digestive interactions and flows of individual nutrients, so that feed values depend on the final ration. Animal requirements account for variability in metabolic efficiency. Various productive and non-productive animal responses to diets are quantified. This book presents the whole system for dairy and meat, large and small ruminant production, including specificities for tropical and Mediterranean areas. The first two sections present biological concepts and equations (with their field of application and statistical accuracy) used to predict intake (including at grazing) and nutrient supply (Section 1), animal’s requirements and multiple responses to diets (Section 2). They apply to net energy, metabolisable protein and amino acids, water, minerals and vitamins. Section 3 presents the use of concepts and equations in rationing with two purposes: (1) diet calculation for a given performance objective; and (2) prediction of the multiple responses of animal to diet changes. Section 4 displays the tables of feed values, and their prevision. All the equations and concepts are embedded in the fifth version of INRAtion® software for practical use.

The Research Topic “Morphological Plant Modeling: Unleashing Geometric and Topological Potential within the Plant Sciences” is the result of a workshop held at National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) in Knoxville, Tennessee. From 2.-4. September 2015 over 40 scientists from mathematics, computer science, engineering, physics and biology came together to set new frontiers in combining plant phenotyping with recent results from shape theory at the interface of geometry and topology. In doing so, the Research Topic synthesizes the views from multiple disciplines to reveal the potential of new mathematical concepts to analyze and quantify the relationship between morphological plant features. As such, the Research Topic bundles examples of new mathematical techniques including persistent homology, graph-theory, and shape statistics to tackle questions in crop breeding, developmental biology, and vegetation modeling. The challenge to model plant morphology under field conditions is a central theme of the included papers to address the problems of climate change and food security, that require the integration of plant biology and mathematics from geometry and topology research applied to imaging and simulation techniques.
