Book excerpt: The challenge of managing the present and projected electricity energy needs along with targets of mitigating CO2 emissions leads to the need for energy systems to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and rely on more energy from renewable sources. The integration of more renewable energy technologies to meet present and future electricity demand leads to more challenges in matching the trade-o between economic, resilient, reliable and environmentally friendly solutions. Energy storage technologies can provide temporal resilience to energy systems by solving these challenges. Energy storage systems can improve the reliability of energy systems by reducing the mismatch between supply and demand due to the intermittency of renewable energy sources. This thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of various energy storage systems, analyzing their speci c characteristics including capital cost, e ciency, lifetime and their usefulness in di erent applications. Di erent hybrid energy systems are designed to analyze the impacts of renewable and non-renewable energy sources and energy storage systems in residential on-grid and o -grid buildings and districts. An optimization analysis is performed to determine which technology combinations provide the most economic solution to meet electric energy demands. The optimization analysis is solved using the "energy hub" model formulation which optimizes energy system operation and capacity of di erent technologies. Di erent energy systems can be optimized by using energy hub model, including multiple input energy carriers that are converted to multiple energy outputs. The analysis in this thesis employs a building simulation tool to model residential building, and real data sets to explore the di erent electricity pro le e ects on the results. The environmental e ect of hybrid energy systems comparing with base cases of conventional energy systems or grid connection are also analyzed. Results show that the feasibility of energy storage systems is a factor of di erent variables including capital cost of energy converters and energy storage systems, cost of input streams (grid electricity in on-grid systems and diesel fuel in o -grid systems, energy demand pro les and availability of renewable energy sources. The on-grid single and district buildings do not select storage technologies at current costs due to cheap grid electricity. Reduction in the cost of renewable energy technologies and/or energy storage systems (e.g. Li-ion batteries) results in more energy storage installations. In o -grid systems (single buildings and districts), Li-ion battery and pumped hydro are the main storage systems that can balance the daily and seasonal energy demands.

Due to this development, future residential house energy systems will face an increased complexity with respect to operation, system configuration and sizing of generation and storage technologies. In this thesis, a mixed integer linear programming model for the integrated operation, configuration and sizing of house energy systems is developed and discussed with respect to its applicability to the specifics of self-consumption in residential dwellings. The conducted scenario analysis shows, that over a wide range of assumptions, PV is a robust measure to decrease the total cost of ownership for heat pump and gas boiler based house energy systems. The existence of a feed-in-tariff and the electricity price structure have a much larger influence on the results than the energy price development. A feed-in-tariff generally incentivizes larger PV systems with higher levels of self-sufficiency, whereas small demand-driven PV systems with high levels of self-consumption are favored in absence of a feed-in-tariff. Overall, the proposed model is regarded as applicable for the identified minimum flexibility requirements for the employed generation technologies. The results from the scenario computations provide a clear and robust picture of the role of electricity generation technologies and flexibility options for future house energy systems.

Energy storage has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by decreasing electricity demand from power plants, increasing the reliability of electricity supplied to customers, and saving costs by deferring upgrades of overloaded systems. Current efforts to implement storage are limited because existing power systems have a large generation capacity that can ordinarily match system demand; thus, it is difficult to justify the economic gains of storage technologies in an already interconnected network. However, with the rise in electrification and variable renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, the value proposition of storage might be changing, especially in local distribution systems. As such, more advanced modeling techniques are needed to assess the technical and economic feasibility of integrating batteries into electric grids. This study uses REopt (Renewable Energy Integration and Optimization), a comprehensive and accurate optimization tool developed by the National Renewable Energy Lab, to quantify the energetic, environmental and economic impacts of distributed energy resources in Austin Energy’s power portfolio. Austin Energy is a municipal electric utility owned and operated by the City of Austin, which is the state capital of Texas. This study’s findings suggest that the value of utility-scale energy storage is expected to increase with future load growth on the grid and as extreme weather events become more catastrophic. We show that batteries as small as 1MW can increase reliability of the grid; however, a larger battery is more profitable by providing higher savings from energy arbitrage and 4 Coincident-Peak (4CP) avoidance. Our results demonstrate that a battery is only economical if it can perform 4CP avoidance and although perfect foresight of 4CP events is useful, it is not that important when considering the value of storage. In summary, there are promising opportunities for energy storage as small as 1MW in providing economic savings and resilience benefits to overloaded feeders in Austin Energy’s distribution network

Book excerpt: Commercial facility utility bills are often a strong function of demand charges -- a fee proportional to peak power demand rather than total energy consumed. In some instances, demand charges can constitute more than 50% of a commercial customer's monthly electricity cost. While installation of behind-the-meter solar power generation decreases energy costs, its variability makes it likely toleave the peak load -- and thereby demand charges -- unaffected. This then makes demand charges an even larger fraction of remaining electricity costs. Adding controllable behind-the-meter energy storage can more predictably affect building peak demand, thus reducing electricity costs. Due to the high cost of energy storage technology, the size and operation of an energy storage system providingdemand charge management (DCM) service must be optimized to yield a positive return on investment (ROI). The peak demand reduction achievable with an energy storage system depends heavily on a facility's load profile, so the optimal configuration will be specific to both the customer and the amount of installed solar power capacity. We explore the sensitivity of DCM value to the power and energylevels of installed solar power and energy storage systems. An optimal peak load reduction control algorithm for energy storage systems will be introduced and applied to historic solar power data and meter load data from multiple facilities for a broad range of energy storage system configurations. For each scenario, the peak load reduction and electricity cost savings will be computed. Fromthis, we will identify a favorable energy storage system configuration that maximizes ROI.
