Book Synopsis Optimal Drum Scheduling Algorithm by : Stanford University Stanford Electronics Laboratories

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suppose there is a set of N records which must be read or written from a drum, fixed-head disk, or similar storage unit of a computing system. The records are of varying length and arbitrarily located on the surface of the drum. An algorithm is developed which will schedule the processing of these records so as to minimize the total amount of rotational latency (access time), taking into account the current position of the drum. This algorithm has the attractive property of exhibiting a computational complexity on the order of N/logN. The general approach taken by the algorithm is to consider the schedule for processing the records as a single cycle permutation over the set of records. It first finds a permutation that minimizes the total latency time, regardless of the number of disjoint cycles in the permutation. The algorithm then transforms the minimal latency time permutation into a single cycle permutation while increasing the latency time of the schedule as little as possible. (Author).

Book Synopsis Integer Programming and Related Areas by : C. Kastning
Download or read book Integer Programming and Related Areas written by C. Kastning and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integer Prograw~ing is one of the most fascinating and difficult areas in the field of Mathematical Optimization. Due to this fact notable research contributions to Integer Programming have been made in very different branches of mathematics and its applications. Since these publications are scattered over many journals, proceedings volumes, monographs, and working papers, a comprehensive bibliography of all these sources is a helpful tool even for specialists in this field. I initiated this compilation of literature in 1970 at the Institut fur ~konometrie und Operations Research, University of Bonn. Since then many collaborators have contributed to and worked on it. Among them Dipl.-Math. Claus Kastning has done the bulk of the work. With great perseverance and diligence he has gathered all the material and checked it with the original sources. The main aim was to incorporate rare and not easily accessible sources like Russian journals, preprints or unpublished papers. Without the invaluable and dedicated engagement of Claus Kastning the bibliography would never have reached this final version. For this reason he must be considered its responsible editor. As with any other collection this literature list has a subjective viewpoint and may be in some sense incomplete. We have however tried to be as complete as possible. The bibliography contains 4704 different publications by 6767 authors which were classified by 11839 descriptor entries.

Book Synopsis Combinatorial Optimization by : Bruno Simeone
Download or read book Combinatorial Optimization written by Bruno Simeone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The C.I.M.E. Summer School at Como in 1986 was the first in that series on the subject of combinatorial optimization. Situated between combinatorics, computer science and operations research, the subject draws on a variety of mathematical methods to deal with problems motivated by real-life applications. Recent research has focussed on the connections to theoretical computer science, in particular to computational complexity and algorithmic issues. The Summer School's activity centered on the 4 main lecture courses, the notes of which are included in this volume:

Book Synopsis Material Flow Systems in Manufacturing by : J.M. Tanchoco
Download or read book Material Flow Systems in Manufacturing written by J.M. Tanchoco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of contributions related to the design and control of material flow systems in manufacturing. Material flow systems in manufacturing covers a broad spectrum of topics directly affecting issues related to facilities design, material handling and production planning and control. In selecting the papers to include in this book, the scope was limited to the design and operational control aspects related to the physical move ment of parts, tools, containers and material handling devices. Recent develop ments in this area naturally led to concentration on flow systems involving cellular manufacturing, and automated transport equipment such as automated guided vehicles. However, the concepts discussed have general applicability to a wide range of manufacturing flow problems. The book is organized in five major sections: 1. design integration and justification; 2. cell design and material handling considerations; 3. alternative material flow paths; 4. operational control problems; and 5. tooling requirements and transport equipment.

Book Synopsis An analysis of drum storage units by : Stanford University. Computer Science Department
Download or read book An analysis of drum storage units written by Stanford University. Computer Science Department and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report discusses the modeling and analysis of drum-like storage units. Two common forms of drum organizations and two common scheduling disciplines are considered: the file drum and the paging drum; first-in-first-out (FIFO) scheduling and shortest-latency-time-first (SLTF) scheduling. The modeling of the I/O requests to the drum is an important aspect of this analysis. Measurements are presented to indicate that it is realistic to model requests for records, or blocks of information to a file drum, as requests that have starting addresses uniformly distributed around the circumference of the drum and transfer times that are exponentially distributed with a mean of 1/2 to 1/3 of a drum revolution. The arrival of I/O requests is first assumed to be a Poisson process and then generalized to the case of a computer system with a finite degree of multiprogramming. (Author).
