Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design of water distribution networks is traditionally based on trial-and-approach in which the designer assumes, based on experience and judgment, sizes of different elements and successively modifies them until a network with satisfactory hydraulic performance is obtained. This text covers: Essential hydraulic, economic optimization principles. Theory is developed gradually for optimal design of simple, single-source branched networks subjected to single loading to complex, multiple-source looped networks subjected to multiple loading. Strengthening and expansion of existing networks and also reliability-based design. Several illustrative examples enabling the reader to apply them in practice- approximately 100 line drawings.

Book Synopsis Optimal Design of Water Distribution Networks Using Harmony Search by : Zong Woo Geem
Download or read book Optimal Design of Water Distribution Networks Using Harmony Search written by Zong Woo Geem and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional mathematical optimization methods, such as linear programming (LP), nonlinear programming (NLP) and dynamic programming (DP), often have drawbacks in practice. To overcome these drawbacks, various meta-heuristic optimization techniques have been developed. This study proposes a new meta- heuristic algorithm which mimics musical performance, and names as Harmony Search (HS). The HS algorithm is applied to five problems: a continuous function optimization, a hydrologic parameter calibration, a traveling salesman problem, an optimal design of water supply network, and an optimal expansion of water supply network. The comparison of solutions obtained by HS and other optimization techniques shows that the HS algorithm can find better solutions in less number of iterations. The new algorithm can solve continuous-variable problems as well as discrete- variable problems without unnecessary restrictions imposed by calculus-based algorithms.

Book excerpt: This volume includes selected contributions presented during the 2nd edition of the international conference on WaterEnergyNEXUS which was held in Salerno, Italy in November 2018. This conference was organized by the Sanitary Environmental Engineering Division (SEED) of the University of Salerno (Italy) in cooperation with Advanced Institute of Water Industry at Kyungpook National University (Korea) and with The Energy and Resources Institute, TERI (India). The initiative received the patronage of UNESCO – World Water Association Programme (WWAP) and of the International Water Association (IWA) and was organized with the support of Springer (MENA Publishing Program), Arab Water Council (AWC), Korean Society of Environmental Engineering (KSEE) and Italian Society of Sanitary Environmental Engineering Professors (GITISA). With the support of international experts invited as plenary and keynote speakers, the conference aimed to give a platform for Euro-Mediterranean countries to share and discuss key topics on such water-energy issues through the presentation of nature-based solutions, advanced technologies and best practices for a more sustainable environment. This volume gives a general and brief overview on current research focusing on emerging Water-Energy-Nexus issues and challenges and its potential applications to a variety of environmental problems that are impacting the Euro-Mediterranean zone and surrounding regions. A selection of novel and alternative solutions applied worldwide are included. The volume contains over about one hundred carefully refereed contributions from 44 countries worldwide selected for the conference. Topics covered include (1) Nexus framework and governance, (2) Environmental solutions for the sustainable development of the water sector, (3) future clean energy technologies and systems under water constraints, (4) environmental engineering and management, (5) Implementation and best practices Intended for researchers in environmental engineering, environmental science, chemistry, and civil engineering. This volume is also an invaluable guide for industry professionals working in both water and energy sectors.

Book Synopsis A methodology for optimal design of water distribution systems by : William Francis Rowell
Download or read book A methodology for optimal design of water distribution systems written by William Francis Rowell and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive methodology for the design of municipal water distribution systems that explicitly incorporates reliability and performance into the system design is developed. The complex design problem is decomposed within the context of a three-level hierarchically integrated system of models. The first and second level models combine to select the links in the distribution system layout. The third level model accomplishes the detailed system design for the layout from the upper level models. Two alternative first level models, a shortest path tree and a nonlinear programming model, are developed to select the minimum cost tree layout. Two second level, complementary 0-1 integer programming models are developed to select the loop-forming links for the minimum cost tree layout. The third level nonlinear programming model optimizes the detailed distribution system design (link diameters, pump capacities, elevated storage heights, and valve resistance) of the resulting network layout with respect to distribution system performance under expected emergency loading conditions (fire demand, broken links, pump outage). This detailed design is performed subject to satisfying steady state conditions, minimum performance levels under normal loading conditions, and maximum budget level. The methodology is applied to the design of a real life water distribution system. (Author).
Book Synopsis Optimal Capacity Expansion of Water Distribution Networks by : Hugh D. Hudgins
Download or read book Optimal Capacity Expansion of Water Distribution Networks written by Hugh D. Hudgins and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report develops a mathematical model for the optimal design of branched water distribution networks with staged construction to meet capacity expansion requirements. The mathematical model considers capacity expansion of the network by either replacing or paralleling existing pipe with new pipe. The use of the model is demonstated in the design of the water supply system for a city in a developing country which was previously designed by a combination of computer and hand calculation. A comparative analysis of the two designs is made in the report."--leaf ii
