Book excerpt: Design of water distribution networks is traditionally based on trial-and-approach in which the designer assumes, based on experience and judgment, sizes of different elements and successively modifies them until a network with satisfactory hydraulic performance is obtained. This text covers: Essential hydraulic, economic optimization principles. Theory is developed gradually for optimal design of simple, single-source branched networks subjected to single loading to complex, multiple-source looped networks subjected to multiple loading. Strengthening and expansion of existing networks and also reliability-based design. Several illustrative examples enabling the reader to apply them in practice- approximately 100 line drawings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive methodology for the design of municipal water distribution systems that explicitly incorporates reliability and performance into the system design is developed. The complex design problem is decomposed within the context of a three-level hierarchically integrated system of models. The first and second level models combine to select the links in the distribution system layout. The third level model accomplishes the detailed system design for the layout from the upper level models. Two alternative first level models, a shortest path tree and a nonlinear programming model, are developed to select the minimum cost tree layout. Two second level, complementary 0-1 integer programming models are developed to select the loop-forming links for the minimum cost tree layout. The third level nonlinear programming model optimizes the detailed distribution system design (link diameters, pump capacities, elevated storage heights, and valve resistance) of the resulting network layout with respect to distribution system performance under expected emergency loading conditions (fire demand, broken links, pump outage). This detailed design is performed subject to satisfying steady state conditions, minimum performance levels under normal loading conditions, and maximum budget level. The methodology is applied to the design of a real life water distribution system. (Author).

Book excerpt: Small communities violate federal requirements for safe drinking water as much as three times more often than cities. Yet these communities often cannot afford to improve their water service. Safe Water From Every Tap reviews the risks of violating drinking water standards and discusses options for improving water service in small communities. Included are detailed reviews of a wide range of technologies appropriate for treating drinking water in small communities. The book also presents a variety of institutional options for improving the management efficiency and financial stability of water systems.

Book excerpt: Rural Water Systems for Multiple Uses and Livelihood Security covers the technological, institutional, and policy choices for building rural water supply systems that are sustainable from physical, economic, and ecological points-of-view in developing countries. While there is abundant theoretical discourse on designing village water supply schemes as multiple use systems, there is too little understanding of the type of water needs in rural households, how they vary across socio-economic and climatic settings, the extent to which these needs are met by the existing single use water supply schemes, and what mechanisms exist to take care of unmet demands. The case studies presented in the book from different agro ecological regions quantify these benefits under different agro ecological settings, also examining the economic and environmental trade-offs in maximizing benefits. This book demonstrates how various physical and socio-economic processes alter the hydrology of tanks in rural settings, thereby affecting their performance, also including quantitative criteria that can be used to select tanks suitable for rehabilitation. Covers interdisciplinary topics deftly interwoven in the rural context of varying geo-climatic and socioeconomic situations of people in developing areas Presents methodologies for quantifying the multiple water use benefits from wetlands and case studies from different agro ecologies using these methodologies to help frame appropriate policies Provides analysis of the climatic and socioeconomic factors responsible for changes in hydrology of multiple use wetlands in order to help target multiple use water bodies for rehabilitation Includes implementable models for converting single use water supply systems into multiple use systems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accurate water supply plan is achieved. However, the system reliability is not assured. A robust optimization approach, hence, was introduced into the design process of a water supply system as a framework to consider uncertainties of the correlated future data by applying a new robust optimization approach. The approach allows for the control of the degree of conservatism which is a crucial factor for the system reliabilities and economical feasibilities. The system stability is guaranteed under the most uncertain condition. It was found that the water supply system with uncertainty can be a useful tool to assist decision makers to develop future water supply schemes.

Book excerpt: Rainwater tank systems have been widely adopted across the world to provide a safe local source of water in underdeveloped rural areas, a substitution for mains water for non potable end uses in water stressed urban areas, as well as providing flooding control in monsoonal climates such as Korea, or combined sewer systems such as Germany. The importance of these systems in cities has grown, as water managers seek to provide a range of decentralised solutions to supply constraints of current water supply systems, whilst reducing the impact of urban development on the natural environment, and increasing resilience to the impacts of climate change. Rainwater tank systems are now often implemented under integrated urban water management (IUWM) and water sensitive urban design (WSUD) philosophies, which take a holistic view of the urban water cycle. Rainwater Tank Systems for Urban Water Supply is based on a comprehensive, multi-million dollar research program that was undertaken in South East Queensland (SEQ) Australia in response to the Millennium drought when the water supply level in the regions drinking water dams dropped to 17% in July 2007 and the area came close to running out of water. In particular, the book provides insights and detailed analysis of design, modelling, implementation, operation, energy usage, economics, management, health risk, social perceptions and implications for water quality/quantity of roof water runoff. The approaches and methodologies included in Rainwater Tank Systems for Urban Water Supply inform and validate research programs, and provide insights on the expected performance and potential pitfalls of the adoption of rainwater tanks systems including: actual harvested yield and resulting mains water savings, optimal sizing for rainwater storages and roof collection systems, expected water quality and implications for managing public health risks, modelling tools available for decision support, operation and management approaches of a decentralised asset at the household scale and community acceptance. The book is suitable for use at undergraduate and post graduate levels and is of particular interest to water professionals across the globe, who are involved in the strategic water planning for a town, city or a region. It is a valuable resource for developers, civil designers, water planners, architects and plumbers seeking to implement sustainable water servicing approaches for residential, industrial and commercial developments.
