Book excerpt: Many mathematical models of physical, biological and social systems involve partial differential equations (PDEs). The desire to understand and influence these systems naturally leads to considering problems of control and optimization. This book presents important topics in the areas of control of PDEs and of PDE-constrained optimization, covering the full spectrum from analysis to numerical realization and applications. Leading scientists address current topics such as non-smooth optimization, Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellmann equations, issues in optimization and control of stochastic partial differential equations, reduced-order models and domain decomposition, discretization error estimates for optimal control problems, and control of quantum-dynamical systems. These contributions originate from the “International Workshop on Control and Optimization of PDEs” in Mariatrost in October 2011. This book is an excellent resource for students and researchers in control or optimization of differential equations. Readers interested in theory or in numerical algorithms will find this book equally useful.

Book excerpt: In the development of optimal control, the complexity of the systems to which it is applied has increased significantly, becoming an issue in scientific computing. In order to carry out model-reduction on these systems, the authors of this work have developed a method based on asymptotic analysis. Moving from abstract explanations to examples and applications with a focus on structural network problems, they aim at combining techniques of homogenization and approximation. Optimal Control Problems for Partial Differential Equations on Reticulated Domains is an excellent reference tool for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in mathematics and areas of engineering involving reticulated domains.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents the most recent developments in the study of Hamilton-Jacobi Equations and control problems with discontinuities, mainly from the viewpoint of partial differential equations. Two main cases are investigated in detail: the case of codimension 1 discontinuities and the stratified case in which the discontinuities can be of any codimensions. In both, connections with deterministic control problems are carefully studied, and numerous examples and applications are illustrated throughout the text. After an initial section that provides a “toolbox” containing key results which will be used throughout the text, Parts II and III completely describe several recently introduced approaches to treat problems involving either codimension 1 discontinuities or networks. The remaining sections are concerned with stratified problems either in the whole space R^N or in bounded or unbounded domains with state-constraints. In particular, the use of stratified solutions to treat problems with boundary conditions, where both the boundary may be non-smooth and the data may present discontinuities, is developed. Many applications to concrete problems are explored throughout the text – such as Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) type problems, large deviations, level-sets approach, large time behavior, and homogenization – and several key open problems are presented. This monograph will be of interest to graduate students and researchers working in deterministic control problems and Hamilton-Jacobi Equations, network problems, or scalar conservation laws.

Book excerpt: This title examines the structure of approximate solutions of optimal control problems considered on subintervals of a real line. Specifically at the properties of approximate solutions which are independent of the length of the interval. The results illustrated in this book look into the so-called turnpike property of optimal control problems. The author generalizes the results of the turnpike property by considering a class of optimal control problems which is identified with the corresponding complete metric space of objective functions. This establishes the turnpike property for any element in a set that is in a countable intersection which is open everywhere dense sets in the space of integrands; meaning that the turnpike property holds for most optimal control problems. Mathematicians working in optimal control and the calculus of variations and graduate students will find this book useful and valuable due to its presentation of solutions to a number of difficult problems in optimal control and presentation of new approaches, techniques and methods.

Book excerpt: The author of this book made an attempt to create the general theory of optimization of linear systems (both distributed and lumped) with a singular control. The book touches upon a wide range of issues such as solvability of boundary values problems for partial differential equations with generalized right-hand sides, the existence of optimal controls, the necessary conditions of optimality, the controllability of systems, numerical methods of approximation of generalized solutions of initial boundary value problems with generalized data, and numerical methods for approximation of optimal controls. In particular, the problems of optimization of linear systems with lumped controls (pulse, point, pointwise, mobile and so on) are investigated in detail.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the study of classes of optimal control problems arising in economic growth theory, related to the Robinson–Solow–Srinivasan (RSS) model. The model was introduced in the 1960s by economists Joan Robinson, Robert Solow, and Thirukodikaval Nilakanta Srinivasan and was further studied by Robinson, Nobuo Okishio, and Joseph Stiglitz. Since then, the study of the RSS model has become an important element of economic dynamics. In this book, two large general classes of optimal control problems, both of them containing the RSS model as a particular case, are presented for study. For these two classes, a turnpike theory is developed and the existence of solutions to the corresponding infinite horizon optimal control problems is established. The book contains 9 chapters. Chapter 1 discusses turnpike properties for some optimal control problems that are known in the literature, including problems corresponding to the RSS model. The first class of optimal control problems is studied in Chaps. 2–6. In Chap. 2, infinite horizon optimal control problems with nonautonomous optimality criteria are considered. The utility functions, which determine the optimality criterion, are nonconcave. This class of models contains the RSS model as a particular case. The stability of the turnpike phenomenon of the one-dimensional nonautonomous concave RSS model is analyzed in Chap. 3. The following chapter takes up the study of a class of autonomous nonconcave optimal control problems, a subclass of problems considered in Chap. 2. The equivalence of the turnpike property and the asymptotic turnpike property, as well as the stability of the turnpike phenomenon, is established. Turnpike conditions and the stability of the turnpike phenomenon for nonautonomous problems are examined in Chap. 5, with Chap. 6 devoted to the study of the turnpike properties for the one-dimensional nonautonomous nonconcave RSS model. The utility functions, which determine the optimality criterion, are nonconcave. The class of RSS models is identified with a complete metric space of utility functions. Using the Baire category approach, the turnpike phenomenon is shown to hold for most of the models. Chapter 7 begins the study of the second large class of autonomous optimal control problems, and turnpike conditions are established. The stability of the turnpike phenomenon for this class of problems is investigated further in Chaps. 8 and 9.

This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work selects a specific issue from the numerical analysis of optimal control problems. We investigate a linear-quadratic optimal control problem based on a partial differential equation on 3-dimensional non-convex domains. Based on efficient solution methods for the partial differential equation an algorithm known from control theory is applied. Now the main objectives are to prove that there is no degradation in efficiency and to verify the result by numerical experiments. We describe a solution method which has second order convergence, although the intermediate control approximations are piecewise constant functions. This superconvergence property is gained from a special projection operator which generates a piecewise constant approximation that has a supercloseness property, from a sufficiently graded mesh which compensates the singularities introduced by the non-convex domain, and from a discretization condition which eliminates some pathological cases. Both isotropic and anisotropic discretizations are investigated and similar superconvergence properties are proven. A model problem is presented and important results from the regularity theory of solutions to partial differential equation in non-convex domains have been collected in the first chapters. Then a collection of statements from the finite element analysis and corresponding numerical solution strategies is given. Here we show newly developed tools regarding error estimates and projections into finite element spaces. These tools are necessary to achieve the main results. Known fundamental statements from control theory are applied to the given model problems and certain conditions on the discretization are defined. Then we describe the implementation used to solve the model problems and present all computed results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the study of distributed control problems governed by various nonsmooth state systems. The main questions investigated include: existence of optimal pairs, first order optimality conditions, state-constrained systems, approximation and discretization, bang-bang and regularity properties for optimal control. In order to give the reader a better overview of the domain, several sections deal with topics that do not enter directly into the announced subject: boundary control, delay differential equations. In a subject still actively developing, the methods can be more important than the results and these include: adapted penalization techniques, the singular control systems approach, the variational inequality method, the Ekeland variational principle. Some prerequisites relating to convex analysis, nonlinear operators and partial differential equations are collected in the first chapter or are supplied appropriately in the text. The monograph is intended for graduate students and for researchers interested in this area of mathematics.
