Book excerpt: Optical transition radiation (OTR) measurements of the electron-beam emittance have been performed at a location just before the wiggler in the Los Alamos Free-Electron Laser (FEL) experiment. Beam profiles and beam divergence patterns from a single macropulse were recorded simultaneously using two intensified charge-injection device (CID) television cameras and an optical beamsplitter. Both single-foil OTR and two-foil OTR interference experiments were performed. Preliminary results are compared to a reference variable quadrupole, single screen technique. New aspects of using OTR properties for pointing the e-beam on the FEL oscillator axis, as well as measuring e-beam emittance are addressed. 7 refs., 9 figs.

Book Synopsis The Los Alamos Free-electron Laser Energy-recovery Experiment by :
Download or read book The Los Alamos Free-electron Laser Energy-recovery Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments have been concluded demonstrating energy recovery in conjunction with the Los Alamos free-electron laser. In this paper, we discuss measurements of electron-beam transport during decelerations greater than 70% from 21 MeV down to 5 MeV. Power-flow measurements demonstrate the efficient conversion of beam power back into rf power and its reuse in the accelerator. We also describe instabilities of the system and compare them with simulations.
Download or read book Radiation Chemistry written by C.D. Jonah and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-08-23 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, radiation chemistry emerged as a multi-faceted field encompassing all areas of science. Radiation chemical techniques are becoming increasingly popular and are being routinely used not only by chemists but also by biologists, polymer scientists, etc. "Radiation Chemistry: Present Status and Future Trends" presents an overall view of the different aspects of the subject. The chapters review the current status of the field and present the future opportunities in utilizing radiation chemical techniques. This will be of interest to chemists in general and in particular to radiation chemists, chemical kineticists, photochemists, physical-organic chemists and spectroscopists. In view of the diverse nature of the field, the book is a multi-authored effort by several experts in their particular areas of research. Six main areas, both basic and applied, were identified and the book is organized around them. The topics were selected in terms of their relative importance and the contribution of radiation chemistry to the general areas of chemistry, biology and physics. The topics covered are as diverse as gas phase radiation chemistry, the use of radiation chemical techniques, the treatment of water pollutants, the chemical basis of radiation biology, and muonium chemistry. The book also contains an update of the next generation electron accelerators.

Book Synopsis Recent Results of the Los Alamos Free-electron Laser Oscillator Experiment by :
Download or read book Recent Results of the Los Alamos Free-electron Laser Oscillator Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the last Lasers '83 Conference, significant progress has been made on the Los Alamos free-electron laser (FEL). Although the previously reported results were in agreement with theory, the data were plagued by gain fluctuations, and no spectral measurements had been obtained. Since then, the source of the fluctuations has been analyzed and substantially reduced. Also, the optical power and spectra dependence on beam emittance, alignment, cavity length, energy spread, and current were systematically studied. This paper reports on the results obtained with a uniform-period wiggler. 3 refs., 14 figs., 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: Experiments with a tapered-wiggler free-electron laser have demonstrated extraction of about 3% of the energy from the electron beam and measured the corresponding optical emission. These results are in excellent agreement with theory and represent an order-of-magnitude improvement over all previous results.
Book Synopsis A Transition Radiation Experiment to Measure the Electron Beam Modulation Induced by the Free Electron Laser by : Jack E. Joynson
Download or read book A Transition Radiation Experiment to Measure the Electron Beam Modulation Induced by the Free Electron Laser written by Jack E. Joynson and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modulated beam of the free electron laser when passed through a thin target should produce strong transition radiation. The measurement of the transition radiation is a direct measurement of the electron beam modulation in the free electron laser A transition radiation experiment using the Stanford MKIII Infrared Free Electron Laser (IRFEL) has been proposed. The analysis has centered on TRANSPORT, a computer program used for designing charged particle beam systems. The MKIII IRFEL wiggler exit bending magnet system was modeled using TRANSPORT. Analysis reveals that the transverse emittance and momentum spread characteristics will cause the modulated beam to demodulate along the path of the central trajectory. A detector location 10 millimeters downstream of the first bending magnet is found suitable for the measurement of the electron beam modulation. For this case the thin foil must be rotated approximately 11.25 degrees about the y axis to yield a minimum effective picobunch extent as seen by the thin foil. Alternate FEL systems are suggested for investigation.
