Book excerpt: This third edition of the biomedical optics classic Tissue Optics covers the continued intensive growth in tissue optics—in particular, the field of tissue diagnostics and imaging—that has occurred since 2007. As in the first two editions, Part I describes fundamentals and basic research, and Part II presents instrumentation and medical applications. However, for the reader’s convenience, this third edition has been reorganized into 14 chapters instead of 9. The chapters covering optical coherence tomography, digital holography and interferometry, controlling optical properties of tissues, nonlinear spectroscopy, and imaging have all been substantially updated. The book is intended for researchers, teachers, and graduate and undergraduate students specializing in the physics of living systems, biomedical optics and biophotonics, laser biophysics, and applications of lasers in biomedicine. It can also be used as a textbook for courses in medical physics, medical engineering, and medical biology.

Book Synopsis Optical Imaging and Aberrations by : Virendra N. Mahajan
Download or read book Optical Imaging and Aberrations written by Virendra N. Mahajan and published by SPIE-International Society for Optical Engineering. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years have passed since the publication of the first edition of this classic text in April 2001. Considerable new material amounting to 100 pages has been added in this second edition. Each chapter now contains a Summary section at the end. The new material in Chapter 4 consists of a detailed comparison of Gaussian apodization with a corresponding beam, determination of the optimum value of the Gaussian radius relative to that of the pupil to yield maximum focal-point irradiance, detailed discussion of standard deviation, aberration balancing, and Strehl ratio for primary aberrations, derivation of the aberration-free and defocused OTF, discussion of an aberrated beam yielding higher axial irradiance in a certain defocused region than its aberration-free focal-point value, illustration that aberrated PSFs lose the advantage of Gaussian apodizaton in reducing the secondary maxima of a PSF, and a brief description of the characterization of the width of a multimode beam. In Chapter 5, the effect of random longitudinal defocus on a PSF is included. The coherence length of atmospheric turbulence is calculated for looking both up and down through the atmosphere. Also discussed are the angle of arrival of a light wave propagating through turbulence, and lucky imaging where better-quality short-exposure images are selected, aligned, and added to obtain a high-quality image.

Book Synopsis Applied Optics and Optical Engineering V7 by : Robert Shannon
Download or read book Applied Optics and Optical Engineering V7 written by Robert Shannon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Optics and Optical Engineering, Volume VII discusses the developments and improvements in some areas of applied optics. This book contains eight chapters that tackle the concepts, techniques, and process vital to optical engineering design. This book deals first with the luminous properties and spectral radiance of incoherent light sources, followed by an overview of plastic optical components. The subsequent chapters describe the refractive and reflective characteristics of various optical materials, such as optical glass, crystals, and vitreous silica glass. These topics are followed by a discussion on the macro- and micro-image properties and signal-to-noise transfer during photographic recording, which are crucial to the proper utilization of photographic materials in optical applications. This volume further provides the tools required for the analysis of the propagation of laser beams. A chapter explores the scalar and vector scattering theories for light scattering calculation of correlated surface microirregularities. The final chapter emphasizes the significant role of adaptive optical techniques for wave-front correction and removal of deleterious phase perturbations. This book will be greatly appreciated by applied scientists and optical engineers.
