Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in optical fiber sensors The field of optical fiber sensor technology is one that continues to expand and develop at a rate that could barely have been predicted a few years ago. The wealth of publications appearing in the technical literature and the burgeoning number of papers presented at the now well-established series of national and international conferences, which are attended by a wide selection of technically qualified optoelectronics professionals, gives a clear indication of both the range and scale of the devices and applications now seen in the subject. Such a rapid expansion makes it very difficult for the scientist and engineer, under pressure to be both informed and effective for an employer, to attend all these meetings, selectively read the appropriate literature and be able quickly to gain the knowledge in those specific areas which will give the best advantage for the work in hand. To that end, this volume has been planned and carefully designed to provide an essential overview, and detailed specific information, on those novel and exciting aspects of optical fiber sensor technology that have recently emerged, with particular focus on the devices and the exciting applications of this part of optoelectronic technology in the vast international measurement and instrumentation area.

Book excerpt: This book presents the principles and applications of optical fiber communication based on digital signal processing (DSP) for both single and multi-carrier modulation signals. In the context of single carrier modulation, it describes DSP for linear and nonlinear optical fiber communication systems, discussing all-optical Nyquist modulation signal generation and processing, and how to use probabilistic and geometrical shaping to improve the transmission performance. For multi-carrier modulation, it examines DSP-based OFDM signal generation and detection and presents 4D and high-order modulation formats. Lastly, it demonstrates how to use artificial intelligence in optical fiber communication. As such it is a useful resource for students, researches and engineers in the field of optical fiber communication.

Book excerpt: This book provides an updated description of the most relevant types of highly nonlinear fibers. It also describes some of their actual applications for nonlinear optical signal processing. Multiple types of highly nonlinear fibers are considered, such as silica-based conventional highly nonlinear fibers, tapered fibers, photonic crystal fibers, and fibers made of highly nonlinear materials, namely lead-silicate, tellurite, bismuth oxide, and chalcogenide glasses. Several nonlinear phenomena occurring on such highly nonlinear fibers are described and used to realize different functions in the area of all-optical signal processing.  Describes several nonlinear phenomena occurring on optical fibers, namely nonlinear phase modulation, parametric and stimulated scattering processes, optical solitons, and supercontinuum generation.  Discusses different types of highly nonlinear fibers, namely silica-based conventional highly nonlinear fibers, tapered fibers, and photonic crystal fibers.  Examines fibers made of highly nonlinear materials, namely lead-silicate, tellurite, bismuth oxide, and chalcogenide glasses.  Describes the application of several nonlinear phenomena occurring on highly nonlinear fibers to realize different functions in the area of all-optical signal processing, namely optical amplification, multiwavelength sources, pulse generation, optical regeneration, wavelength conversion, and optical switching. Mário F. S. Ferreira received his PhD degree in 1992 in physics from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, where he is now a professor in the Physics Department. Book excerpt: Few mode optical fibers have been shown to produce predictable interference patterns when placed under strain. The use is described of a modal domain sensor in a vibration control experiment. An optical fiber is bonded along the length of a flexible beam. Output from the modal domain sensor is used to suppress vibrations induced in the beam. A distributed effect model for the modal domain sensor is developed. This model is combined with the beam and actuator dynamics to produce a system suitable for control design. Computer simulations predict open and closed loop dynamic responses. An experimental apparatus is described and experimental results are presented. Thomas, Daniel and Cox, Dave and Lindner, D. K. and Claus, R. O. Unspecified Center NAG1-895...

This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stimulated Brillouin scattering is one of the dominant nonlinear effects in single mode optical fibers due to its low threshold. Its unique Lorentzian gain spectrum characteristic with the narrow linewidth of 20-30 MHz has enabled numerous of applications, such as optical signal processing, delay and light storage, optical spectrum analysis and distributed sensing. However, a fixed spectral characteristic cannot meet the requirements of a variety of applications. Therefore, an engineered, reconfigurable or arbitrary manipulated gain spectrum is of great importance. This book will start from the basics of stimulated Brillouin scattering and its principle for distributed fiber sensing and optical signal processing. The basic method for Brillouin gain spectrum engineering by the pump modulation and the superposition with Brillouin loss(es) will be introduced. As the main contain of this book, the application of Brillouin gain spectrum engineering in the field of static and dynamic distributed fiber sensing, and optical signal processing together with the advantages and benefits will be demonstrated in detail. Under the assistance of gain spectrum engineering, solutions have been proposed for drawbacks such as measurand resolution in static distributed fiber sensing, tradeoff between dynamic range and sensitivity in dynamic distributed fiber sensing, and inevitable Brillouin noise in optical and microwave photonic filters based on stimulated Brillouin scattering.
