Book Synopsis Waves in Focal Regions by : J.J Stamnes
Download or read book Waves in Focal Regions written by J.J Stamnes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using numerous mathematical and numerical techniques of diffraction theory, Waves in Focal Regions: Propagation, Diffraction and Focusing of Light, Sound and Water Waves provides a full and richly illustrated description of waves in focal regions. Unlike most books, the author treats electromagnetic, acoustic, and water waves in one comprehensive volume. After an introductory section, the book describes approximate diffraction theories and efficient numerical methods to study the focusing of various kinds of waves. It then covers the physical interpretation of the theories, their accuracy, and the computational savings obtained, emphasizing uniform asymptotic results that remain valid in the vicinity of shadow boundaries and caustics. The next part deals with the focusing of scalar waves, including thorough theoretical analyses and detailed contour maps of diffraction patterns in focal regions for a variety of different system parameters, such as f-number, Frensel number, aperture shape, amplitude distribution, and wavefront aberration. The author proceeds to explore the diffraction and focusing of electromagnetic waves. First solutions are derived for fields radiated by sources, reflected and refracted at plane interfaces, or diffracted by apertures in plane screens, and then these solutions are applied to study the focusing in homogeneous media and through a plane dielectric interface. In both cases, the author includes many computed results of the electromagnetic field distribution near focus. Presenting both theoretical and experimental results, the following part examines the focusing of sound and water waves by means of zone-plate lenses. The book concludes with a detailed study of the diffraction and focusing of water waves and a comparison of the results of both linear and nonlinear theories with those of experiments.

This book was released on 2013-01-13 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book presents all aspects of acoustic metamaterials and phononic crystals. The emphasis is on acoustic wave propagation phenomena at interfaces such as refraction, especially unusual refractive properties and negative refraction. A thorough discussion of the mechanisms leading to such refractive phenomena includes local resonances in metamaterials and scattering in phononic crystals.
Book Synopsis Computational Ocean Acoustics by : Finn B. Jensen
Download or read book Computational Ocean Acoustics written by Finn B. Jensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-10 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senior level/graduate level text/reference presenting state-of-the- art numerical techniques to solve the wave equation in heterogeneous fluid-solid media. Numerical models have become standard research tools in acoustic laboratories, and thus computational acoustics is becoming an increasingly important branch of ocean acoustic science. The first edition of this successful book, written by the recognized leaders of the field, was the first to present a comprehensive and modern introduction to computational ocean acoustics accessible to students. This revision, with 100 additional pages, completely updates the material in the first edition and includes new models based on current research. It includes problems and solutions in every chapter, making the book more useful in teaching (the first edition had a separate solutions manual). The book is intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate students of acoustics, geology and geophysics, applied mathematics, ocean engineering or as a reference in computational methods courses, as well as professionals in these fields, particularly those working in government (especially Navy) and industry labs engaged in the development or use of propagating models.

Book Synopsis Deep Learning for Marine Science by : Haiyong Zheng
Download or read book Deep Learning for Marine Science written by Haiyong Zheng and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep learning (DL), mainly composed of deep and complex neural networks such as recurrent network and convolutional network, is an emerging research branch in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. DL revolution has a far-reaching impact on all scientific disciplines and every corner of our lives. With continuing technological advances, marine science is entering into the big data era with the exponential growth of information. DL is an effective means of harnessing the power of big data. Combined with unprecedented data from cameras, acoustic recorders, satellite remote sensing, and large model outputs, DL enables scientists to solve complex problems in biology, ecosystems, climate, energy, as well as physical and chemical interactions. Although DL has made great strides, it is still only beginning to emerge in many fields of marine science, especially towards representative applications and best practices for the automatic analysis of marine organisms and marine environments. DL in nowadays' marine science mainly leverages cutting-edge techniques of deep neural networks and massive data which collected by in-situ optical or acoustic imaging sensors for underwater applications, such as plankton classification and coral reef detection. This research topic aims to expand the applications of marine science to cover all aspects of detection, classification, segmentation, localization, and density estimation of marine objects, organisms, and phenomena.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Radiation Acoustics by : Alexander Kalinichenko

Book Synopsis Physical Acoustics V16 by : Warren P. Mason
Download or read book Physical Acoustics V16 written by Warren P. Mason and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Acoustics: Principles and Methods reviews the principles and methods of physical acoustics and covers topics ranging from relaxation processes in sound propagation in fluids to acoustic vibrational modes in quartz crystals, along with electron and phonon drag on mobile dislocations in metals at low temperatures. Two-pulse phonon echoes in solid-state acoustics and memory echoes in powders are also discussed. The reader is then introduced to electron and phonon drag on mobile dislocations at low temperatures, together with two-pulse phonon echoes in solid-state acoustics and dynamic polarization echoes in powdered materials. The book also considers memory echoes in powders before concluding with an evaluation of acousto-optic transduction mechanisms used in fiber optic acoustic sensors, together with their practical implementation. This book will be of interest to physicists.

Book Synopsis The Acoustical Unconscious by : Robert Ryder
Download or read book The Acoustical Unconscious written by Robert Ryder and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-02-21 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there an acoustical equivalent to Walter Benjamin’s idea of the optical unconscious? In the 1930s, Benjamin was interested in how visual media expand our optical perception: the invention of the camera allowed us to see images and details that we could not consciously perceive before. This study argues that Benjamin was also concerned with how acoustical media allow us to “hear otherwise,” that is, to listen to sound structures previously lost to the naked ear. Crucially, they help sensitize us to the discursive sonority of words, which Benjamin was already alluding to in his autobiographical work. In five chapters that range in scope from Tieck’s Blonde Eckbert, which Benjamin once called his locus classicus of his theory of forgetting, to Alexander Kluge’s films and short texts, where he develops what he calls “sound perspectives,” this monograph discusses how the acoustical unconscious enriches our understanding of different media, from the written word to radio and film. As the first book-length study of Benjamin’s linguistic, cultural-historical, and media-theoretical reflections on sound, this book will be particularly relevant to students and scholars of both German studies and sound studies.
