Both primary and secondary data sources were used. Documents, key informant interview and FGD were among the main data collection instruments used to examine and show IP practices in the continent and Ethiopia’s Bole Lemi and Hawassa IPs in particular. Officials and experts from Ethiopian IPDC and EIC, HRMs from nine companies, IPs' managers and employees of enterprises have responded the interview questions; households who are evicted due to IPs constructions have also participated in the FGD and different documents reviewed. Data have been interpreted through theoretical basis, basic standard, conception and comparative approach.

Policy capacity and societal learning are increasingly stressed as pre-conditions for successful catch-up. However, how such learning should be initiated by individual societies with different features needs to be explained. The book answers this pragmatic question from the perspective of Japan’s past experience and its extensive development cooperation in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Since the late nineteenth century, Japan has developed a unique philosophy and method for adopting advanced technologies and systems from the West; the same philosophy and method govern its current cooperation with the developing world. The key concepts are local learning and translative adaptation. Local learning says that development requires the learner to adopt a proactive mindset and the goal of graduating from receiving aid. Meanwhile, translative adaptation requires foreign models be modified to fit local realities given the different structures of the home and foreign society. The development process must be wholly owned by the domestic society in rejection of copy-and-paste acceptance. These ideas not only informed Japan but are key to successful development for all. The book also asks how this learning method should—or should not—be revised in the age of SDGs and digitalization. Following the overview section that lays out the general principles, the book offers many real cases from Japan and other countries. The concrete actions outlined in these cases, with close attention to individual growth “ingredients” as opposed to general theories, are crucial to successful policy making. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.

These are: Matsehafä Berhan; Matsehafä Milad; Egziabher Nagsä; Sebhatä Fequr; Matsehafä Sellassie; Matsehafä Bahrey; Tä’aqebo Mestir; Tomarä Tesebe’it; Kehedatä Säytan; Darsanä Malaekt; Ra’eyä Ta’amer; Melke’a Gubae, and Mangadä Samay. These texts are investigated out in content and literary value. In addition, he has produced hymns which are prepared in poetic form, and the lines are rhymed as rhymeisthemostfamiliarelementofpoetry; the hymns are constructed in end rhyme. In his hymns, figurative speeches especially simile and metaphor are well applied. The researcher has long realized potential value of the literary productions in the period of Zara Yaqob as source for the study of Ethiopian literature and history. The works are very important to study social, economic, historical, religious, and the political history of Ethiopia in addition to their literary values.

The study utilized a sequential exploratory mixed approach, drawing data from students, instructors, schools’ deans/directors of universities, industry officials and experts from federal ministries, selected using non-proportional stratified and purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected using questionnaires, semi-structures interviews, focus group discussions and document analysis. Findings indicated that the practice of university-industry partnerships is still weak, and many barriers remain that undermined its growth and potential benefits for both sectors. Limited awareness of universities and industries regarding university-industry partnership’s benefits, absence of clear and specific policies and appropriate organizational structures, and lack of resources were among the most critical challenges that undermine successful partnerships in Ethiopia. Additional challenges that negatively influenced university-industry partnership’s success include inadequate incentives for researchers and industry as they engage in partnership initiatives, absence of adequate monitoring and evaluation, and inadequate industry participation in the design of engineering education curriculum at universities. All these suggest that, in Ethiopia, the roles played by the universities, industries, and the government in enhancing university-industry partnerships were insignificant, thereby weakening the contributions such partnerships would provide to the country’s economy while at the same time creating efficient working systems in universities and industries.

To satisfy the objectives of this study, descriptive and inferential analyses were used. The information was collected from the sample of 150 MSEs with face to face interviews. The sampled MSEs were selected by simple random sampling technique. Besides that, the study draws out with nine key challenges which seem to influence the profitability of MSEs in both sub-cities. The results point to that, there is a strong relationship between the independent and dependent variable. Furthermore, the selected explanatory variables may significantly explain the variations of the explained variance at 5% and 10% level of significance. Based on the results, financial, managerial, raw material, work premises and technologies are the main challenges of MSEs, those to be profitable and successful. Therefore, recommendations are forwarded to government bodies, micro and small construction material producer enterprise and to other researchers.

Book excerpt: Analyzing labour law compliance data in the apparel industry from Better Factories Cambodia, we find that (1) there was a broad improvement in working conditions among factories both with and without a reputation sensitive buyer, (2) factories with a reputation sensitive buyer have higher average compliance, (3) after the elimination of public disclosure of factory level noncompliance the rate of improved compliance slowed for factories with a reputation sensitive buyer and compliance declined for factories lacking a reputation sensitive buyer but (4) compliance did not return to the baseline even in the absence of a reputation sensitive buyer or threat of public disclosure of noncompliance. These findings are consistent with the hypotheses that (1) third party enforcement complements code compliance efforts by reputation sensitive buyers, (2) factory-specific public disclosure of noncompliance helps control free-riding of noncompliant factories lacking a reputation sensitive buyer on the market-level reputational externalities generated by compliant factories and that (3) enforcement activities induce factories to experiment in human resource management innovations that are both more humane and more efficient.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Economy and Industry, grade: Excellent, Mekelle University (Institute of Development Studies), language: English, abstract: In the developing world plenty of programmes and initiatives have been working to disseminate improved wood burning cookstoves which have health, economic and environmental benefits. To this end, understanding factors affecting adoption of improved cookstoves plays a key role. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that affect households ‘Mirt’ stove adoption decision in rural kebeles of Dembecha Woreda, Amhara Regional State of Ethiopia, by using mixed research methods. A survey was conducted with a structured questionnaire for 210 households that were systematically selected from three rural kebeles which were selected purposively. Semi-structure interviews and focus group discussions were also held with a total of 9 key informants. Data from questionnaires were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression and data from interviews and the focus group discussions were analyzed through intensive textual analysis. The regression result reveals that women literacy level and separate kitchen house were found to be significant and positively correlated with the probability of Mirt stove adoption decision while marital status, source of wood and price of Mirt stove were found to be significant and negatively correlated with the probability of Mirt stove adoption decision. Furthermore, age and family size of the household characteristics were not found to be statistically significant. Providing services and supports to the potential users and producers, denying access to open forest and decentralizing Mirt stove production sites were found to be institutional factors to influence Mirt stove adoption. Membership in social associations, active participation in social activities, informal information exchange, early adopters and neighbors’ influence were found to be social factors that influence Mirt stove adoption. Thus, women’s literacy level should be increased through adult education. Improved cookstoves programs and projects should target on areas where there is no open forest access. And there should be more structural decentralization in terms of assigning rural energy experts from Woreda to kebele level.
