Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first ethnographic studies to explore use of social media in the everyday lives of people in Tamil Nadu, Social Media in South India provides an understanding of this subject in a region experiencing rapid transformation. The influx of IT companies over the past decade into what was once a space dominated by agriculture has resulted in a complex juxtaposition between an evolving knowledge economy and the traditions of rural life. While certain class tensions have emerged in response to this juxtaposition, a study of social media in the region suggests that similarities have also transpired, observed most clearly in the blurring of boundaries between work and life for both the old residents and the new. Venkatraman explores the impact of social media at home, work and school, and analyses the influence of class, caste, age and gender on how, and which, social media platforms are used in different contexts. These factors, he argues, have a significant effect on social media use, suggesting that social media in South India, while seeming to induce societal change, actually remains bound by local traditions and practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the bicycle, like the loudspeaker, a medium of communication in India? Do Indian children need trade unions as much as they need schools? What would you do with a mobile phone if all your friends were playing tag in the rain or watching Indian Idol? Children and Media in India illuminates the experiences, practices and contexts in which children and young people in diverse locations across India encounter, make, or make meaning from media in the course of their everyday lives. From textbooks, television, film and comics to mobile phones and digital games, this book examines the media available to different socioeconomic groups of children in India and their articulation with everyday cultures and routines. An authoritative overview of theories and discussions about childhood, agency, social class, caste and gender in India is followed by an analysis of films and television representations of childhood informed by qualitative interview data collected between 2005 and 2015 in urban, small-town and rural contexts with children aged nine to 17. The analysis uncovers and challenges widely held assumptions about the relationships among factors including sociocultural location, media content and technologies, and children’s labour and agency. The analysis casts doubt on undifferentiated claims about how new technologies ‘affect’, ‘endanger’ and/or ‘empower’, pointing instead to the importance of social class – and caste – in mediating relationships among children, young people and the poor. The analysis of children’s narratives of daily work, education, caring and leisure supports the conclusion that, although unrecognised and underrepresented, subaltern children’s agency and resourceful conservation makes a significant contribution to economic, interpretive and social reproduction in India.

Book excerpt: It is acknowledged that 'Democracy' is government "of the people, by the people and for thepeople". This phrase in its essence points out the fact that a democracy is result of participationof people at every level without any coercion and by obtaining their consent which comes outof free will. The participation of people, whether directly or indirectly is cornerstone ofdemocracy. To ensure that subjects are not being subjected to any arbitrariness, democracyinvolves various measures. The peculiarity attached to democratic system of governance is itsdependence on the citizenry and their decision. It is also safe to assert that viability, efficiencyand integrity of any democracy depends on how informed its citizens are and as a consequencethe decision making of the public must be backed by the genuine information. For the purposesof this research, India has been considered as a focal point of the study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media in India has become a public court that is interfering with court proceedings. Media influence people’s talk at a given time and place. Media influences the population’s opinion regarding situations in the society. The media reflects people’s diverse perceptions of unlike situations. Media presents stories in a manner that will capture the public’s attention regarding the situations. Recently, the media has also been involved in criminal justice trials, especially high-profile cases. This has been said to interfere with the criminal justice process, including witness testimony and the evidence collected in a given case. There is a widespread concern that criminal justice processes should be handled carefully by the media. The current study was conducted to examine the influence of media on the criminal justice system in India. The study examined the relationship between court verdicts and media trials in India. The narrative policy framework was used to guide the study. Data were gathered from a variety of sources, including the court cases and the related verdicts picked up by the media as media trials from 2005 to 2015. Findings indicated that media interference affects the Indian criminal justice system, often adversely. Findings may be used to help public policymaking bodies formulate media guidelines about reporting crime and the justice system in India. Findings may also be used to bolster public confidence in the judicial system in India.

Book excerpt: This book is the first analysis of the dynamics of British press reporting of India and the attempts made by the British Government to manipulate press coverage as part of a strategy of imperial control. The press was an important forum for debate over the future of India and was used by significant groups within the political elite to advance their agendas. Focuses on a period which represented a critical transitional phase in the history of the Raj, witnessing the impact of the First World War, major constitutional reform initiatives, the tragedy of the Amritsar massacre, and the launching of Gandhi’s mass movement. Asserts that the War was a watershed in official media manipulation and in the aftermath of the conflict the Government’s previously informal and ad hoc attempts to shape press reporting were placed on a more formal basis.
