Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmology of General Practice During the earlier part of my professional life I was engaged for several years in a busy general practice. Always interested in Ophthalmology, and with a certain amount of special training, I endeavoured to turn this knowledge to account, but was soon forced to realize my limitations in this respect. Unfortunately, the patient too often does not recognize such limitations, but expects his medical man to be an expert in all branches of medicine and surgery. In my difficulties I consulted various well-known textbooks on Ophthalmology, but in vain. They gave me excellent advice as to treatment in cases I was unable to diagnose; they appeared to me, in fact, to proceed on the assumption that I knew more than I really did, and, in order thoroughly to understand many parts of these works, a good deal of preliminary study was necessary, the time for which I could ill afford. I therefore reluctantly gave up treating diseases of the eye altogether. I do not defend that attitude. I am convinced, indeed, that the general practitioner can and ought to undertake treatment and give advice in many ophthalmic cases; and even when he does not profess to do so, he may occasionally find himself in a position in which he will be forced to express an opinion and initiate some line of treatment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 5: November, 1915 It is very true that examinations have been largely directed to ascertaining a candidate's ability to remember and use words, and that such ability is something very different from fitness for ophthalmic practice. It is quite true that examinations can be given, and have been given, in which the recent student actively crammed for the test, although he is quite incompetent for medical practice, makes a better showing than the thoroughly competent, experienced medical practitioner. But that such examinations are possible, or have been, is very far from proving that they are the only kind possible, or that they need to be repeated or perpetuated. A recent writer points out that medical examinations may reach a very close approximation to the tests for actual practice; and where carefully worked out they have done so, as the crammed student has found to his sorrow. Even the written examination which seems to afford the ideal opportunities for cramming can be so modified as to make it an im portant test of real fitness for practice by wisely framed questions. Let us contrast the kind of question that favors the crammed student with one that tests the real ability to focus acquired knowledge on a practical condition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handy-Book of Ophthalmic Surgery for the Use of Practitioners IN writing these pages it has been our aim to bring the principles and practice of Modern Ophthalmic Surgery within a small compass, to supply the wants of the busy practitioner, who may have neither time nor opportunity to read the innumerable contributions that Ophthalmic surgery and science have received within the last fifteen years. In describing symptoms, we have limited ourselves to those which are essential for the recognition of disease in describing operations, &c., to those details which are essential for its treatment. At present it matters little to the practitioner whether glaucoma depend on a hypersecretion of the fluids of the eye, or on a rheumatic state of the circulation, or on an obscure affection of the ciliary nerves, &c. What he chiefly wants is, how to know glaucoma and, when he knows it, how to treat it. We have not, however, thought it foreign to our scope to introduce occasionally a few representative cases, which serve to illustrate preceding descriptions. The practice we describe is that pursued at the Ophthalmic Hospital, Southwark, where 6000 patients are treated annually.
