Book Synopsis Farmers, Workers and Machines by : Harland Padfield
Download or read book Farmers, Workers and Machines written by Harland Padfield and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that labor supply consists of men, women, and children in families with their own accustomed and often well-loved ways of living is often overlooked in any discussion of "the farm labor problem." this study uses both agricultural economics and cultural anthropology in analyzing employment problems. The analysis covers (1) histories of the development of the citrus, lettuce, and cotton industries with examples of companies using different harvesting operations, (2) the economics of the technologies, (3) the workers, (4) the participants in their distinctive cultural and institutional settings--Mexican-American, anglo-isolate, negro, Indian, and management, and (5) the participants in their common technological setting. Some of the conclusions were--(1) Arizona agriculture, as a variant of southwestern agriculture, is an instrument of exploitation of unsophisticated, culturally unassimilated peoples, and functions also as an assimilative mechanism working in the direction of upward occupational mobility and by doing depletes itself of its own labor supply, (2) displacement of the higher occupational classes tends to be permanent because its members do not fit the lower occupational classes, and (3) when members of the lower occupational classes are replaced by higher class workers, the members of the lower classes tend to remain in the industry and compete for the new higher-status jobs. Some implications for farm employment and manpower were--(1) an unemployed worker should be retrained in a higher occupational class, (2) if a worker is displaced from the highest occupational status in the industry, he should be retrained for another industry, (3) anglo-isolates cannot be rehabilitated by training programs, and (4) the concept of training for occupational adjustment must be broadened to deal effectively with institutional and cultural factors.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last several decades, the number of people who are actively involved in the hobby or science of mineral collecting has grown at an increasing pace. In response to the growing demand for informa tion which this large and active group has created, a number of books have been published dealing with mineralogy. As a result, the reader now has a choice among mineral locality guides, field handbooks, photo collections, or books dedicated to the systematic description of minerals. However, as interest in mineralogy has grown, as collectors have become increasingly knowledgeable and aware of mineralogy in its many facets, the need for more specialized information has also grown. Nowhere is this need greater than in the subject of the fluorescence of minerals. The number of collectors who now main tain a fluorescent collection is substantial, interest is constantly increasing, and manufacturers have recently responded by the intro duction of new ultraviolet equipment with major improvements in utility and performance. Yet when the collector searches for any information on this subject, little will be found. He or she will seek in vain for the answers to questions which present themselves as in terest in fluorescent minerals grows and matures. Which minerals fluoresce? Where are fluorescent minerals found? What makes a mineral fluoresce? Why does ultraviolet light produce fluorescence? What is an activator, and how does it contribute to fluorescence? On these matters, the available mineralogy books are largely silent.

Book Synopsis The Water Environment of Cities by : Lawrence A. Baker
Download or read book The Water Environment of Cities written by Lawrence A. Baker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept for the Water Environment of Cities arose from a workshop “Green 1 Cities, Blue Waters” workshop held in 2006. The workshop assembled experts from engineering, planning, economics, law, hydrology, aquatic ecology, geom- phology, and other disciplines to present research ?ndings and identify key new ideas on the urban water environment. At a lunch discussion near the end of the workshop, several of us came to the recognition that despite having considerable expertise in a narrow discipline, none of us had a vision of the “urban water en- ronment” as a whole. We were, as in the parable, blind men at opposite ends of the elephant, knowinga great deal about the parts, but notunderstandingthe whole. We quickly recognized the need to develop a book that would integrate this knowledge to create this vision. The goal was to develop a book that could be used to teach a complete, multidisciplinary course, “The Urban Water Environment”, but could also be used as a supplemental text for courses on urban ecosystems, urban design, landscapearchitecture, water policy, waterqualitymanagement andwatershed m- agement. The book is also valuable as a reference source for water professionals stepping outside their arena of disciplinary expertise. The Water Environment of Cities is the ?rst book to use a holistic, interdis- plinary approach to examine the urban water environment. We have attempted to portrayaholisticvisionbuiltaround theconcept of water as a coreelement ofcities. Water has multipleroles:municipalwatersupply,aquatichabitat,landscapeaesth- ics, and recreation. Increasingly, urban water is reused, serving multiple purposes.
