Book excerpt: This book broadly explains the requirement to focus on core components in a business and provides a case study of open-pit mining operations throughout the book to understand the management perspective of large organizations. With globalized approaches of large businesses and the rising requirement of understanding the needs of modern organizations, it is necessary to focus on key areas of businesses to ensure sustainability of operations. Organizations look into achieving a high return on investments and short-term measures in increasing sales or revenue is considered unsuitable. It is a necessity to look for sustainability and continuous methods of innovation to boost efficiency. This book provides a case study based on large organizations and uses qualitative methodologies where data was collected using in-depth interviews of respondents from various mining companies in the top and middle-level management from different parts of the world, detailing the state of the art of information systems currently used in large scale open-pit miming (LSOPM). This book provides a sound knowledge of cutting-edge factors to the reader for managing the business to attain operational excellence and long-term sustainability, and caters to a broad spectrum of management and technical readers.

Book excerpt: Mining operations are booming as a result of rising mineral demand, and mining companies have grown their operations to great financial success. The need for sustainable management in the mining industry has never been more important. This new book provides an overview of sustainable supply chain management through computational and multicriteria decision-making analyses. It explores sustainability and sustainable supply chain management in the context of transportation and electricity generation. Soft computing methods, such as fuzzy AHp and QFD, to identify the major difficulties for mines are discussed as are the detrimental effects of mines and how sustainability management can be forecast by taking into account current supply chain patterns in the mining sector. The most significant difficulties in the mining sector, such as waste management and supplier selection criteria, are covered as well, taking into account specific analytical indicators to discover the most socially and ecologically responsible solutions. The authors evaluate the security risks in the mining business and offer solutions. The final section offers current and potential future sustainable supply chain management solutions. This comprehensive work on the sustainability of supply chain in mining not only covers decision making and management but also explores barriers to the mining industry. It demonstrates how to analyze data by computational methods for sustainable management and offers an enhanced understanding of supply chain management concepts and challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining is a transformative activity which has numerous economic, social and environmental impacts. These impacts can be both positive and adverse, enhancing as well as disrupting economies, ecosystems and communities. The extractive industries have been criticised heavily for their adverse impacts and involvement in significant social and environmental scandals. More recently, these industries have sought to respond to negative perceptions and have embraced the core principles of sustainability. This sector could be regarded as a leader in sustainability initiatives, evident from the various developments and frameworks in mining and sustainability that have emerged over time. This book reviews current topical issues in mining and sustainable development. It addresses the changing role of minerals in society, the social acceptance of mining, due diligence in the mining industry, critical and contemporary debates such as mining and indigenous peoples and transit worker accommodation, corporate sustainability matters such as sustainability reporting and taxation, and sustainability solutions through an emphasis on renewable energy and shared-used infrastructure. Written by experts from Australia, Europe and North America, but including examples from both developed and developing countries, the chapters provide a contemporary understanding of sustainability opportunities and challenges in the mining industry. The book will be of interest to practitioners, government and civil society as well as scholars and students with interests in mining and sustainable development.

Book excerpt: Metals and minerals are all around us in our everyday lives. They’re used in everything from cars and kitchen appliances to smartphones and complex medical equipment. These natural resources are also integral to many forms of renewable energy. Mining is part of our transition to a clean future. As we expand the use of clean energy technologies, such as wind and solar power, the demand for metals and minerals will continue to grow exponentially. Yet if the mining industry is not clean, can we really call renewable energy technologies clean? To meet this increasing demand while protecting the environment, we must transition to sustainable mining practices. At the same time, we must double our efforts to improve the negative public perception of mining. Without the support of a committed and well-informed public, fundamental change in mining is not possible. This book offers a three-part framework that demonstrates how sustainability in the mining industry is possible. When these three components are integrated, the future of mining and renewable energy will truly be green. In mining, we don’t just dig a hole in the ground. We build the world. We build the future of the world. Let’s do it sustainably together.

Book excerpt: States in mineral-rich jurisdictions must promote mining as a development industry just as they must protect people and environment from the worst excesses of extractivism. State Governance of Mining, Development and Sustainability explores how the State’s role in facilitating a developmental and sustainable mining industry has been defined. In doing so, this astute book considers the impact of the policies and laws of mineral-rich States themselves, multilateral international governance institutions, industry associations, and environmental justice advocates in the areas of property relations, mineral taxation, environmental management and mine closure.

Book excerpt: Africa's subsoil is rich in hydrocarbons, precious and base metals, and rare metals that are particularly strategic for the global transition to a low-carbon economy. In this context, the continent's beautiful, serious, and pressing challenge is to ensure that the exploitation of its immense natural resources takes place in compliance with the best international standards in terms of sustainable development and transparent management. Then, the wealth created can contribute to the significant improvement of living conditions for the populations of the host countries, while ensuring the attractiveness and competitiveness vis-à-vis other major mining regions. The mining industry obviously has a central role to play in this dynamic. Balancing the interests of varying stakeholders and shareholders, including those often seen at odds like profitability and environmental and social responsibility, Unlocking Our Shared Value proposes a sustainable vision for the future of the extractives industry in West Africa. Targeted at an audience of corporate professionals and academics, this text thoroughly examines the diverse concerns and factors at play in responsible mining and corporate practice. For corporate executives, operational managers, and sustainability practitioners, this book will provide useful tools, strategies, best practices, and a roadmap to build, strengthen or realign the sustainability journey of their organizations, while helping investors have the whole picture of the risks and opportunities related to sustainability during their investment decisions. Therefore, this work will set a new level of corporate sustainability strategies within the extractive sector in West Africa and around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book offer concrete examples from all over the world to show how community livelihoods in mineral-rich tracts can be more sustainable by fully integrating gender concerns into all aspects of the relationship between mining practices and mine affected communities. By looking at the mining industry and the mine-affected communities through a gender lens, the authors indicate a variety of practical strategies to mitigate the impacts of mining on women's livelihoods without undermining women's voice and status within the mine-affected communities. The term 'field' in the title of this volume is not restricted to the open-cut pits of large scale mining operations which are male-dominated workplaces, or with mining as a masculine, capital-intensive industry, but also connotes the wider range of mineral extractive practices which are carried out informally by women and men of artisanal communities at much smaller geographical scales throughout the mineral-rich tracts of poorer countries.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining can have a positive impact on Namibia by contributing towards economic growth and infrastructure development, by creating jobs, and by increasing foreign currency earnings; but on the other hand, the exploration of natural resources often runs in parallel with corruption, exploitation, environmental devastation, and population displacement through migrant labour. It is therefore imperative for mines to be sustainable in their operations: in other words, mines must protect and enhance the economic, social and environmental milieus of Namibia. The main objective of a mining company is profit maximisation through exploitation of natural resources, and the company can therefore be defensive, even antagonistic, towards sustainable operations and sustainability reporting. The pressure from mining companies' stakeholders for them to be transparent in their operations, and to report on all sustainability-related issues is increasing, and research has indicated that mining companies are, in the majority, supportive of the initiative, and realise the advantages of pursuing sustainable operations. Research results from the study indicated that between the different types of companies, and between countries, there is a significant variation in the sustainability reporting performance, both delivered and required. Improvement opportunities were identified in a number of areas with regards to the quality, consistency and extent of sustainability reporting. The rationale and the motivation for this study was therefore to determine the standard of integrated sustainability reporting being achieved by mining companies in Namibia, in order to determine the needs and shortcomings in the sustainability reporting arena. The final deliverable of this study was to develop a reporting framework which could enable enhanced integrated sustainability reporting by providing the mining industry in Namibia with a structured framework that conforms to world class standards.
