Book excerpt: Age, sex, and length composition information will be collected from harvested Chinook salmon in the Upper Cook Inlet Eastside set gillnet (ESSN) commercial fishery in 2021–2023. Genetic tissues from the harvest will also be collected and archived for potential future mixed stock analysis. The primary goal of the study is to estimate the age, sex, and length composition of the Chinook salmon harvest and to estimate the harvest of large (>75 cm METF) Kenai River Chinook salmon in the ESSN fishery for each season (2021–2023). Age, sex, and length composition will be estimated for each temporal and geographic stratum and for each season. The harvest of large Kenai River Chinook salmon will be estimated using historical (2010–2020) large fish stock compositions relative to the total large fish harvest for each temporal and geographic stratum and summed to the total for each season.

Book excerpt: A creel survey will be conducted to estimate sport angler effort, catch, and harvest of large (≥75 cm mid eye to tail fork length) early- and late-run Chinook salmon in the lower Kenai River between the Warren Ames Bridge (river mile [RM] 5.1) and Slikok Creek sanctuary area (RM 18.6). Creel survey estimates will be geographically stratified in relation to the RM 13.7 Kenai River Chinook salmon sonar to provide angler effort, catch, and harvest of large Chinook salmon. A standardized inriver netting project will be conducted in the Kenai River at RM 8.6 to index abundance and estimate the age, sex, and length (ASL) composition of large early- and late-run Chinook salmon. Inseason estimates of Chinook salmon catch and harvest, used in conjunction with sonar passage estimates, inseason catch rates, and the length of returning Chinook salmon from the inriver netting study are used by fisheries managers for inseason management decisions to achieve escapement goals. This plan covers the creel survey and inriver netting studies for the 2021–2023 seasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lower Cook Inlet Management Area consists of all coastal waters and inland drainages entering waters north of Cape Douglas, west of Cape Fairfield, and south of Anchor Point. In 2022, commercial harvest was approximately 751 thousand salmon and was composed of 403,035 pink Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, 292,845 sockeye O. nerka, 53,793 chum O. keta, 1,000 coho O. kisutch, and 275 Chinook salmon O. tshawytscha. Approximately 74.4% of the harvest (555,953 salmon) was sold as common property harvest, and 191,169 salmon were sold for hatchery cost recovery, including carcass sales. Homepack and donated fish (3,826 salmon) accounted for less than 1% of the harvest. Based on fish ticket reporting, the preliminary value of the commercial salmon harvest was $3.7 million, including hatchery sales. During the 2022 season, 15 set gillnet and 11 purse seine permit holders reported commercial deliveries. An additional 3 set gillnet permit holders harvested salmon as home pack and did not report any commercial deliveries. Set gillnet harvest value was an estimated $333,816, with average permit earnings of $22,254. Purse seine fishery exvessel harvest value was an estimated $2.1 million, with average permit earnings of $187,868. Revenue generated by cost recovery for hatchery operations was approximately $1.3 million. A total of 1,531 salmon were harvested in the Kachemak Bay personal use set gillnet fishery.

Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) stocks hatchery-reared Chinook and coho salmon smolt in numerous locations throughout Southcentral Alaska to improve or create terminal sport fisheries in order to meet the demand on sport fishery resources. This project estimates adipose finclip quality and weight composition for Chinook and coho salmon smolt releases. The success of stocking hatchery smolt depends on numerous variables, many associated with the hatchery program. Marking, data collection, and reporting are monitored and standardized for each release so that meaningful comparisons can be made among hatchery releases. Meaningful comparisons may in turn allow project managers to better understand factors critical to the success of smolt stocking projects and to improve existing programs.

Book excerpt: An ongoing coded-wire tag project, used as part of a stock assessment program for Chilkat River Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch, will be conducted during fall 2020 and spring 2021 to provide estimates of smolt abundance and marine harvest for Chinook and coho salmon. This project uses modified Peterson 2-event mark-recapture methods to estimate smolt abundance, and port and creel sampling of coded-wire tags in mixed stock commercial and sport fisheries to estimate marine harvest for both species. Juvenile salmon will be measured for length and weight, marked with adipose fin clips, and tagged with coded wire tags in fall 2020 (juvenile Chinook salmon) and spring 2021 (Chinook and coho salmon smolt) as event 1 of the mark-recapture study. During event 2, adult Chinook salmon will be sampled for missing adipose fins, coded wire tags, age, sex, and length in Chilkat River fishwheels and drift gillnets, which are operated in the lower Chilkat River as part of a separate adult mark-recapture project. Adult Chinook salmon will be also sampled for missing adipose fins, coded wire tags, and age, sex, and length during Chilkat River drainage spawning grounds surveys to complete event 2 sampling. Coho salmon will also be sampled as adults during event 2 in the lower Chilkat River fishwheels. Age composition of Chinook salmon adults will be estimated by scale ageing techniques; age composition of coho salmon smolt and adults will also be estimated. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game uses these data to make local and regional management decisions. Chilkat Chinook salmon is a Pacific Salmon Commission exploitation rate and escapement indicator stock and has recently been added to the base model of abundance indicator stocks for the Chinook Technical Committee, which influences coastwide management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This management plan provides an overview of the expected salmon runs, spawning escapement goals, harvest projections, and management measures for the 2022 Yakutat commercial set gillnet fisheries. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game develops formal preseason forecasts for only the Situk River Chinook salmon run and is forecasting a total run of 1,600 large (3-ocean age and older) fish. Canada develops preseason forecasts for Klukshu River sockeye and Chinook salmon runs and is forecasting a total run of 1,000 Chinook salmon and 11,300 sockeye salmon. Other Yakutat area sockeye and coho salmon runs are expected to be average to above average based on parent year harvests and escapements. The Yakutat set gillnet fishery will open by regulation as described in 5 AAC 30.310 and 5 AAC 30.320, or by emergency order. Set gillnet fisheries are managed by adjusting fishing time and area in response to inseason assessments of run strength. Management emphasis will focus on sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka) and Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in June and July, and transition to coho salmon beginning the first Sunday in August. Continued poor productivity of Chinook salmon and sockeye salmon stocks warrants conservative fishery management during June and July.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Deshka River is the largest producer and has the largest sport fishery of Chinook salmon in the North Cook Inlet Management Area. The Deshka River weir has operated seasonally since 1995. A floating, resistance-board-weir is used at river mile (RM) 7 to enumerate Chinook and coho salmon and to collect age, sex, and length data from these species. The Deshka River sustainable escapement goal (SEG) range is currently 9,000–18,000 fish for Chinook salmon and 10,200–24,100 fish for coho salmon. Data collected at this weir are used to manage sport and commercial fisheries inseason and to develop and evaluate escapement goals. This project is also used as a platform to collect harvest data upstream of RM 7, passage data of other fish species, environmental data, and it provides recapture data for the greater Susitna River drainage Chinook salmon mark–recapture project.
