Book excerpt: 'The book is well-written and makes a significant contribution to the development of the principles and practices of dealing with agri-environmental problems. It is of relevance to a wide circle of readers, including researchers and politicians but also students and others concerned with agri-environmental issues.' - Stefanie Engel and Ulrike Grote, Quarterly Journal of International Agriculture '. . . the book has the potential to provide something for everyone.' - Stefan Bäckmann, European Review of Agricultural Economics Although the history of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is dominated by a process of centralisation, growing pressures to integrate agri-environmental problems into the CAP have revealed the need to embrace decentralised approaches in an efficient federal structure. Indeed, in recent years it has become increasingly evident that the agricultural sector must undergo fundamental changes in order to enter an era of sustainable development.

Book excerpt: • New York Times bestseller • The 100 most substantive solutions to reverse global warming, based on meticulous research by leading scientists and policymakers around the world “At this point in time, the Drawdown book is exactly what is needed; a credible, conservative solution-by-solution narrative that we can do it. Reading it is an effective inoculation against the widespread perception of doom that humanity cannot and will not solve the climate crisis. Reported by-effects include increased determination and a sense of grounded hope.” —Per Espen Stoknes, Author, What We Think About When We Try Not To Think About Global Warming “There’s been no real way for ordinary people to get an understanding of what they can do and what impact it can have. There remains no single, comprehensive, reliable compendium of carbon-reduction solutions across sectors. At least until now. . . . The public is hungry for this kind of practical wisdom.” —David Roberts, Vox “This is the ideal environmental sciences textbook—only it is too interesting and inspiring to be called a textbook.” —Peter Kareiva, Director of the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, UCLA In the face of widespread fear and apathy, an international coalition of researchers, professionals, and scientists have come together to offer a set of realistic and bold solutions to climate change. One hundred techniques and practices are described here—some are well known; some you may have never heard of. They range from clean energy to educating girls in lower-income countries to land use practices that pull carbon out of the air. The solutions exist, are economically viable, and communities throughout the world are currently enacting them with skill and determination. If deployed collectively on a global scale over the next thirty years, they represent a credible path forward, not just to slow the earth’s warming but to reach drawdown, that point in time when greenhouse gases in the atmosphere peak and begin to decline. These measures promise cascading benefits to human health, security, prosperity, and well-being—giving us every reason to see this planetary crisis as an opportunity to create a just and livable world.

Book excerpt: Change for Excellence. This is the second edition of an already great book on Operational Excellence for Management of Change Operations and Change Management Delivery. This is not just another book on the subject, but the only book published providing a tailored approach to implement excellence based on the actual needs of the business and is not "a one size fits" all approach. It is a powerful, pragmatic and relevant guide for all levels of management. Management of Change Operation is the enabler for businesses to be successful in today's competitive environment and tomorrow's cut throat world where only the relevant and nimblest businesses will survive. The change operation within the business must become a responsive, efficient, effective and flexible to deliver quality outcomes at optimum cost with fewer defects and maximise returns on investment budget. The author has designed a unique Blueprint for Operational Excellence. It encompasses an implementation wrapper titled Seven Step Route Planner to Operational Excellence, which is the conduit for applying the four principal elements of excellence. These are: Objectives; Principles; Enablers, and Frameworks. At the centre is the business vision that drives the desired results. The route planner explains the journey through each step and introduces key principles and frameworks tailored for all aspects of a change management operation. The approach is to hold the readers hand through the 380 pages of explanations which in themselves are proven and well known techniques and tools. For change management excellence, there is no need to employ expensive consultants or use time consuming methods that are neither suitable nor fit for purpose. The book is suitable for professionals and students alike and they will quickly grasp the models and proven techniques deployed. It is aimed at anyone who wants to understand all the facets of a change organisation and how they can be improved to provide operational excellence. It conveys techniques clearly, and presents multiple examples and colour illustrations that guide the reader to implement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the role that both infrastructure and governance play in the context of resilience and adaptation to climate variability and change. Eleven case studies analyze in-depth impacts of extreme events in projects, basins and regions in the Arid Americas (Unites States and Mexico), Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, France, Nepal, Mexico, Pakistan, Turkey and South Africa. They discuss the importance of infrastructure (mainly reservoirs) in adaptation strategies, how planning and management aspects should improve in response to changing climatic, economic, social and environmental situations and what the management, institutional and financial challenges would be for their implementation. Governance aspects (policies, institutions and decision making) and technical and knowledge limitations are a substantial part of the analyses. The case studies argue that reservoirs are essential to build resilience contributing to adaptation to climate variability and change. However, that for them to be effective, they need to be planned and managed within a governance framework that considers long-term perspectives and multi-sector and multi-level actor needs and perspectives.
