Book excerpt: The selective oxidation of propylene to acrolein was found to exhibit the following reaction kinetics r = k[C3H6]1 [O2]1/2[*]02, in which [*]0 represents the total number of catalytic surface VO4 active sites/g of catalyst and k is an apparent rate constant that is a function of krds and Kads. The second order dependence on [*]0 suggests that two surface VO4 sites are involved in the rds of propylene oxidation. Although the reaction rate increases as [*]02 with surface vanadia coverage, the most pronounced effect on the reaction kinetics was observed by changing the specific oxide support (ZrO2 & sim; TiO2> Nb2O 5> Al2O3> SiO2). This almost 10 2 variation in Turnover Frequency (TOF) is related to the electron density on the bridging V-O-Support bond that is controlled by the electronegativity of the support cation. Consequently, the lower the support cation electronegativity, the greater the residual electron density on the bridging V-O-support bond for accelerating the redox kinetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reduction-reoxidation of bismuth molybdate is controlled by the diffusion of oxygen ions in the lattice, because the reduction sites do not have to be adjacent to the oxidation sites. The oxygen diffusion rate is in turn controlled by how mobile the lattice oxygen ions are. Hence, the mobile oxygen ions discussed earlier control the catalyst activity in catalysing the reaction of propylene partial oxidation. The examination of several reaction mechanism models has given further evidence that the propylene partial oxidation to acrolein occurs via the redox mechanism. In this mechanism, the rate of acrolein formation depends on the degree of fully oxidised sites in the bismuth molybdate. The oxidised sites affect the apparent reaction orders in propylene and oxygen and thus control the kinetics of partial oxidation of propylene to acrolein. The more easily the reduced catalysts are reoxidised, the more active the catalysts in converting propylene to acrolein. A set of reaction steps has been proposed, which adequately reassembles the reaction mechanism. Side product reactions are also identified and included in the mechanisms. The present thesis has revealed a much detailed insight into the role of lattice oxygen in the catalytic partial oxidation of propylene to acrolein over bismuth molybdates and established the relationship between structure and activity and selectivity of the catalyst. This work has laid a foundation for future catalyst design to be based on structural knowledge of the catalysts.

Book excerpt: Light olefins such as propylene and ethylene are the two most important building blocks in the chemical industry, and their production is energetically costly. Oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of light alkanes has been studied as a lower energy alternative method to produce light olefins. Despite decades of research, there has yet to be a catalyst that is selective and productive enough for industrial implementation. Boron containing materials have recently been identified as highly selective catalysts for the ODH of light alkanes to olefins. These materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), exhibit higher propylene selectivity compared to the previous state-of-the-art supported vanadium oxide catalysts (90% propylene selectivity for h-BN vs. 70% for V/SiO2 at 4% propane conversion). Our group's previous work on these catalysts revealed that the reaction proceeds via a gas-phase radical mechanism, presumably initiated by the surface, and that dynamic boron oxy/hydroxy layer is responsible for catalytic activity. The dynamic nature of the active surface prevents the precise definition of an active site using ex situ techniques. In this work, I describe the use of controlled synthesis and detailed solid state NMR characterization to probe the requirements for active site formation on the catalyst surface. I also describe the first set of in situ/operando X-ray spectroscopy studies of propane ODH over hBN. Operando X-ray Raman spectroscopy is used to show the changes that occur to the catalyst on a bulk scale, while in situ near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the near-surface of the catalyst during propane ODH. The X-ray spectroscopy measurements described set the foundation for future studies of the working catalyst.

Book excerpt: N-Butane selective oxidation over the VPO catalyst to maleic anhydride is the first and only commercialized process of light alkane selective oxidation. The mechanism of this reaction is still not well known despite over twenty years of extensive studies, which can partially be attributed to the extreme difficulties to characterize catalytic reactions real-time under typical reaction conditions. In situ spectroscopic characterization techniques such as Infrared spectroscopy and laser Raman spectroscopy were used in the current mechanistic investigations of n-butane oxidation over VPO catalysts. To identify the reaction intermediates, oxidation of n-butane, 1,3-butadiene and related oxygenates on the VPO catalyst were monitored using FTIR spectroscopy under transient conditions. n-Butane was found to adsorb on the VPO catalyst to form olefinic species, which were further oxidized to unsaturated, noncyclic carbonyl species. The open chain dicarbonyl species then experienced cycloaddition to form maleic anhydride. VPO catalyst phase transformations were investigated using in situ laser Raman spectroscopy. This report contains Chapter 1: General introduction; Chapter 2: Literature review; and Chapter 5: Conclusion and recommendations.

Book excerpt: This volume contains invited papers and communications presented at the Third European Workshop Meeting on Selective Oxidation by Heterogeneous Catalysis. The purpose of the meeting was to present recent results and to discuss new aspects of partial oxidation by heterogeneous catalysis. The following topics were discussed: Novel processes for obtaining new fine chemicals by catalytic partial oxidation; selective oxidation and oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes; new catalysts and advances in preparation methods of oxidation catalysts; new phenomena in partial oxidation and new aspects of surface chemistry in oxide catalysts; new applications of physicochemical methods for characterization of oxide catalysts; oxidation with other agents than oxygen and catalytic oxidation of carbohydrates. This book will provide a valuable set of data on reactions of selective oxidation which will be extremely useful to catalyst and related practitioners, whether fundamentalists or highly applied, and to process engineers who wish to evaluate current findings in this field. The wide-range approach to reactions of selective oxidation will disseminate knowledge in specialized areas of selective oxidation and encourage innovation and creativity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the recent advent of nanotechnology, research and development in the area of nanostructured materials has gained unprecedented prominence. Novel materials with potentially exciting new applications are being discovered at a much higher rate than ever before. Innovative tools to fabricate, manipulate, characterize and evaluate such materials are being developed and expanded. To keep pace with this extremely rapid growth, it is necessary to take a breath from time to time, to critically assess the current knowledge and provide thoughts for future developments. This book represents one of these moments, as a number of prominent scientists in nanostructured materials join forces to provide insightful reviews of their areas of expertise, thus offering an overall picture of the state-- the art of the field. Nanostructured materials designate an increasing number of materials with designed shapes, surfaces, structures, pore systems, etc. Nanostructured materials with modified surfaces include those whose surfaces have been altered via such techniques as grafting and tethering of organic or organometallic species, or through various deposition procedures including electro, electroless and vapor deposition, or simple adsorption. These materials find important applications in catalysis, separation and environmental remediation. Materials with patterned surfaces, which are essential for the optoelectronics industry, constitute another important class of surface-modified nanostructured materials. Other materials are considered nanostructured because of their composition and internal organization.

VPO catalyst phase transformations were investigated using in situ laser Raman spectroscopy. During reduction-oxidation step changes, (VO)2P20-- was readily converted to [Alpha subscript Pi]-, [Delta]-VOP04 and ultimately to [Beta]-VOP04 in O2/N2; these V5 phases were eliminated in n- butane/N2. A "wet" nitrogen feed (5-10% H20 in N2) transformed (VO)2P20-- and [Alpha subscript Iota]-, [Alpha subscript Pi]-, [Beta]-, [Delta]-, [Gamma]-VOP04 to V2O5 at temperatures above 400°C. The presence of water vapor facilitated the loss of oxygen atoms involved in V-O-P bonding; separated vanadium oxide and phosphorus oxide species were formed. The isolated vanadium oxides than transformed to V2O5, and phosphorus species likely diffused from the catalyst lattice in the form of acid phosphates.
