Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This very moving book on the shifting patterns of mourning and grief focuses on the experiences of Australian women who lost their husbands during the Second World War and the wars in Korea and Vietnam. The book makes use of extensive oral testimonies to illustrate how widows internalised and absorbed the traumas of their husband's war experience. Joy Damousi is able to demonstrate that a significant shift in attitudes towards grieving and loss came about between the mid century and the later part of the twentieth century. In charting the memory of grief and its expression, she discerns a move away from the denial and silence which shaped attitudes in the 1950s towards a much fuller expression of grief and mourning and perhaps a new way of understanding death and loss at the beginning of the new century.

Book excerpt: "Immediately after World War II many war widows were adrift - often voiceless, suffering economic hardship and forgotten in the celebratory aftermath of war when commitments made to servicemen in the tumult of wartime were overlooked. Mrs Jessie Vasey established the Guild in 1945 in Victoria and in New South Wales in 1946. The Guild is a national organisation representing war widows - many thousands over the years - who banded together behind their leadership and lobbied for benefits for war widows. This is the history of the guild in New South Wales: a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee whose mission is to promote and protect the interests of war widows. Established by women for women the Guild has fought to improve the financial and social circumstances of members."-- Preface.

Book Synopsis The Last Shilling by : Clem J. Lloyd

Book excerpt: Senator Edward Millen, who conceived and nurtured Australia's repatriation system, described repatriation of returned service personnel as just as much 'an emanation of the heart' as a cause 'worthy of the last shilling'. It had been a concern to Australians since the Boer War, but it was not until 1918 that an entire government department (now the Department of Veterans' Affairs) came into being to address this concern. Drawing on a wealth of Departmental archives and other unpublished material, Clem Lloyd and Jacqui Rees have provided a frank account of an institution that, from soldier settlement schemes to Agent Orange, has responded to the needs of returned service people in a generous and open-hearted way. In a series of chronological and thematic chapters the authors explore the many functions and practices of 'Repat'--from hospitals to scholarships, training programmes to home loans--culminating in an examination of the Department of Veterans' Affairs in the 1980s. The book gives rare insights into successive ministers and prime ministers, senior administrators and front-line staff, returned service personnel and their families. In the course of its 75-year history, the activities of 'Repat' have touched the lives of almost everyone, yet, until now, the makers of policy and those who implemented it have been largely unknown and invisible. Taking in subjects such as Australia's relations with it's military allies, the relationship of the Department to other welfare policies, and the changing nature of Australian society since World War I, the book is a fascinating account of one of Australia's most enduring concerns.
