Book excerpt: Change the World by Changing One Meal a Day Suzy Amis Cameron—environmental advocate, former actor, and mom of five—presents “a timely and empowering guide to take charge of your health—both for your own sake and for the planet’s” (Ariana Huffington) by swapping one meat- and dairy-based meal for a plant-based one every day. The research is clear that a plant-based diet is the healthiest diet on Earth. But what many people don’t realize is that nothing else we do comes close to the environmental impact of what we eat. Now Suzy Amis Cameron explains how we can boost energy, feel better, live healthier, and heal the Earth, starting with just one meal a day. Developed at MUSE School, the school she founded with her sister Rebecca Amis, Suzy’s program makes it possible for anyone and everyone to reverse climate change while they embrace a healthier lifestyle. This one simple step will begin to help you lose weight and stay naturally thin, reverse chronic health concerns, improve overall wellbeing, enjoy newfound energy, and slash your carbon footprint in half. In The OMD Plan, Suzy shares her field-tested plan, outlining the latest science and research on why a plant-based diet is better for one’s health and the environment. Featuring fifty delicious, nourishing recipes and complete with inspiring success stories, shopping lists, meal plans, and pantry tips, The OMD Plan “is a book that nourishes our minds as well providing ways to nourish our bodies” (Jane Goodall).

Book excerpt: Current demographic, economic and social conditions which developed countries are faced with require a paradigm change for delivering high quality and efficient health services. In that context, healthcare systems have to turn from organization-centered to process-oriented and finally towards individualized patient care, also called personal care, based on ehealth platform services. Interoperability requirements for ubiquitous personalized health services reach beyond current concepts of health information integration among professional stakeholders and related Electronic Patient Records. Future personal health platforms particularly have to maintain semantic interoperability among systems using different modalities and technologies, different knowledge representation and domain experts’ languages as well as different coding schemes and terminologies to include home care, as well as personal and mobile systems. This development is not restricted to regions or countries, but appears globally, requiring a comprehensive international collaboration. This publication within the series Studies in Health Technology and Informatics presents papers from leading international experts representing all domains involved in ehealth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MIE 2002 is the XVIIth international conference of the European Federation of Medical Informatics. Today, mankind builds up the information society, enabled by the underlying rapid development in computer technology. The significance of the spread of the internet is comparable to the significance of Gutenberg's invention. On one hand it both helps dissemination of data and knowledge and sharing of ideas. On the other hand the achievements may divide the society, as did non-literacy deprive many people from knowledge throughout centuries. Today millions of people are isolated from an incredibly large amount of information because of "computer non-literacy," and a new elite mastering the information society has appeared. However, the ease of production and dissemination of information may foster thoughtless communication, and has lead to a flood of information and disinformation. We have to learn how to behave in this new situation, in which the dissemination of information - at an international level - is totally uncontrolled. In the area of medical or health informatics these questions are more serious. Lack of information, false or inadequate information, as well as improper interpretation of accurate information may seriously harm patients. And the process may go out of control of the physician, i.e. patients can "treat" themselves just by visiting some health sites on the net. Everybody may throw a message in a bottle in information flood, and everybody may pick up messages at any time. Can we do anything to ensure that all messages are valid? Can we guarantee that our messages reach the intended audience? Can we secure that content has not changed on its way? Do we know that people getting our messages will interpret them correctly? Are we able to understand the intention of a sender, when we get a message totally out of context? These questions build up the framework of MIE2002.

This book contains the proceedings of pHealth 2014, the 11th in a series of successful international conferences on wearable or implantable micro and nano technologies for personalized medicine, held in Vienna, Austria, in June 2014. This conference combined the presentation of emerging principles, future visions and use with a careful analysis of lessons learned from international and national research and development activities and practical solutions. Included here are the keynotes, as well as the oral presentations and poster presentations selected after having been checked by three independent reviewers for inclusion in the conference. The new EU Framework Program for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020, addressing pHealth implementation by focusing on technology transfer support and building ecosystems and value chains to ensure better time to market and higher impact of knowledge-based technologies, is properly reflected as well. The advances made so far in this field are just the beginning of evolutionary and revolutionary changes which will offer significant opportunities for patients and healthcare professionals alike, and this book will be of interest to all those developing, providing or receiving such healthcare services._x000D_ Cover Image Courtesy of Don Espresso – aboutpixel.de

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revered Brazilian songwriter and novelist “has breathed the story of a whole country into a single, unforgettable man with a soul as big as Brazil” (Nicole Krauss, author of Forest Dark). As Eulálio d’Assumpção lies dying in a Brazilian public hospital, his daughter and the attending nurses are treated—whether they like it or not—to his last, rambling monologue. Ribald, hectoring, and occasionally delusional, Eulálio reflects on his past, present, and future—on his privileged, plantation-owning family; his father’s philandering with beautiful French whores; his own half-hearted career as a weapons dealer; the eventual decline of the family fortune; and his passionate courtship of the wife who would later abandon him. Through Eulálio’s journey across the twists and turns of his own fragmented memories, Buarque conjures an evocative portrait of a man’s life and love, while bringing to life the broad sweep of Brazilian history. At once jubilant and painfully nostalgic, playful and devastatingly urgent, readers of the award-winning Spilt Milk will find themselves “in the hands of a master storyteller” (The Plain Dealer). “In Spilt Milk [Buarque] confronts the themes that make Brazil squirm, from the stain of slavery to the inferiority complex the country has historically felt when it compares itself to Europe.” —The New York Times “Lovely details and a fine sense of place . . . Echoing Sebald’s Rings of Saturn . . . There’s plenty to like.” —Publishers Weekly “One of the saddest love stories, and one of the truest.” —Nicole Krauss

Book excerpt: The 9th ACIS/IEEE International Conference on Computer Science and Information Science, held in Kaminoyama, Japan on August 18-20 is aimed at bringing together researchers and scientists, businessmen and entrepreneurs, teachers and students to discuss the numerous fields of computer science, and to share ideas and information in a meaningful way. This publication captures 18 of the conference’s most promising papers, and we impatiently await the important contributions that we know these authors will bring to the ?eld. In chapter 1, Taewan Gu et al. propose a method of software reliability estimation based on IEEE Std. 1633 which is adaptive in the face of frequent changes to software requirements, and show why the adaptive approach is necessary when software requirements are changed frequently through a case study. In chapter 2, Keisuke Matsuno et al. investigate the capacity of incremental learning in chaotic neural networks, varying both the refractory parameter and the learning parameter with network size. This approach is investigated through simulations, which ?nd that capacity can be increased in greater than direct proportion to size. In chapter 3, Hongwei Zeng and Huaikou Miao extend the classical labeled transition system models to make both abstraction and compositional reasoning applicable to deadlock detection for parallel composition of components, and propose a compositional abstraction re?nement approach.
