Book excerpt: The large aggregates in the economy - consumption, investment, production of the domestic and the international sectors, international capital flows, financial accumulation and indebtedness - are analysed in this book as problems in time-optimisation for enterprises and households. The effects of fiscal and monetary policies along with exchange-rate variation are examined, and their simultaneous use for stabilizing demand are found to be necessary. All household decisions on consumptions, savings, and financial disposition are conditioned by uncertainty, and similarly for firms, who make more complex simultaneous decisions on production, real investment, financing, and market strategy. The marginal efficiency-of-investment function derived from these decisions is fundamentally different from the marginal productivity of capital in the neoclassical sense. An economy which grows through the accumulation of capital, increase in labor supply, and technological progress is the framework in which all of these variables move. This codetermines the allocation of factors between domestic and international production, and the development of foreign trade. The growth both of the public debt and of international investment are treated in depth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term OC economic globalizationOCO has been discussed extensively in the popular press, by business executives and by policy-makers all over the world. While academic economists have made some excellent contributions to specific, technical aspects of economic globalization, there appears to be a need for economists to discuss the broader aspects of the issue in a more accessible manner. Failing this, the general debate will be informed only by the writings of non-economists. That is the motivation for this book, which is a collection of essays on various aspects of economic globalization in general, but with specific reference to Asia. Contents: Economic Globalization: Finance, Trade and Taxation: Economic Globalization and Small and Open Economies: Finance, Trade and Taxation; International Monetary and Financial Issues in East Asia: International Capital Flows and Regional Contagion: Boom and Bust in East Asia in the 1990s; Liquidity-Enhancing Measures and Monetary Cooperation in East Asia: Rationale and Progress; Choosing the Right Exchange Rate Regime for Small and Open Economies in East Asia; International Trade Issues in Asia: The Nexus Between Trade Liberalization and Poverty in Asia; India''s Decade-Long Trade Reforms: How Does It Compare with Its East Asian Neighbours? (with Rahul Sen); Singapore''s Drive to Form Cross-Regional Trade Pacts: Rationale and Implications (with Rahul Sen); International Trade in Infrastructural Services in East Asia: Telecommunications and Finance; International Tax Issues in Asia: Economic Globalization and Taxation: With Particular Reference to Southeast Asia (with Mukul Asher). Readership: Policy-makers, businessmen, professionals and others with an interest in international economic affairs and international economic policy."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written form 1957 through 1978 by one of the foremost authorities in the field of international economics, this collection of Peter Kenen's previously published essays deals with issues in the pure theory of international trade, international monetary theory, and international monetary reform. The essays in Part I, "Trade, Tariffs, and Welfare," concern the roles of tangible and human capital in the determination of trade patterns, the joint determination of demand conditions and trade patterns, the gains from international trade, and the effects of migration on economic welfare. Part II, "International Monetary Theory and Policy," contains essays on the theory of gold-exchange standard, the determination of forward exchange rates, the demand for international reserves, economic integration and the delineation of currency areas, and the process of balance of payments adjustment under pegged and floating exchange rates. The essays in Part III, "Monetary Reform and the Dollar," are arranged in chonological order, from 1963 through 1977, and focus on the problems and progress of international monetary reform and on the functioning of the present international monetary system. Peter B. Kenen is Walker Professor of Economics and International Finance at Princeton University. The Princeton Sereies of Collected Essays provides facsimile reprints, in paperback and in cloth, of important articles by leading scholars. Originally published in 1981. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gottfried Haberler's contributions to the field of international trade and finance began in the 1920s with a seminal paper on comparative costs. His continuing contributions to open economy analysis, development, business cycles and inflation, the theory of money, and rational expections are highlighted in this selection of 27 essays spanning the years 1925 to 1980. The essays are divided into five major sections, representing the subdisciplines of Haberler's most significant work. The first section on international trade contains his work on comparative costs, comparative advantage, and the location of production and international trade. A section on international finance deals with the state of the international monetary system under conditions of world recession, control over international reserve, U.S. balance-of-payments policy, currency depreciation and the terms of trade, and transfer and price movements. The topic of inflation and business cycles is covered in the third section, with essays on income policies, stagflation, and the Great Depression, and the international transmission of inflation. Section four deals with economic development, and the concluding section contains essays on the theory of money and general macroeconomic theory. Several articles are translated here for the first time and there is a complete bibliography of Haberler's work up to 1980. Gottfried Haberler is Professor Emeritus of Economics, Harvard University, and Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Anthony Koo is Professor of Economics at Michigan State University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes contain seventy essays chosen largely for the originality of their contributions. The first volume contains several classic papers. Among them are the many contributions to the theory of distortions in the 1960s which laid the foundations of the postwar theory of commercial policy. Also included are Bhagwati's important papers of the 1970s and 1980s which have shaped a new revolution in the theory of trade and welfare: the political-economy-theoretic analysis of DUP (directly-unproductive profit-seeking) activities. Influential essays on the nonequivalence of tariffs and quotas, immiserizing growth, cost-benefit analysis in open economies, and other major areas of trade theory are covered. The second volume presents essays that have opened up new areas of analysis in the theory of international trade and in the associated fields of public finance and developmental economics. Bhagwati's seminal work on the novel question of the appropriate income tax jurisdiction in the presence of international factor mobility, his well-known analyses of the consequences of skilled migration, the problem of the optimal choice between international capital and labor mobility, are all included.
