Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Harry and Christine Meijer on its face is not unique. Throughout history, countless individuals have endured immense physical and psychological trauma as a result of war and authoritarian regimes. These tyrannical leaders motivated by a desire for absolute control and subjugation of the population, inflicted immense suffering upon civilian populations. Born in a country under colonial rule, Harry and Christine in their formative years were undoubtedly marked by a confluence of economic and cultural challenges. However, the true crucible of their lives emerged at the dawn of their adulthood, when they were confronted with adversities of unimaginable magnitude. Their narrative encompasses the reality of lingering PTSD suffered by Harry and Christine, which significantly impacted their nine children during tumultuous migrations across three continents, demanding constant adaptation to unfamiliar cultures and languages. Despite facing these significant hardships, the remarkable resilience and ultimate triumph over adversity stands as a powerful testament to the human spirit’s capacity for perseverance. Grounded in meticulous historical detail and enriched with poignant anecdotes, this work offers readers the opportunity to glean novel insights into the hardships endured by millions in the South Pacific during World War II and also serves as a source of inspiration for overcoming their own challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leon Rousseau's The Dark Stream offers a fascinating insight into the life of Eugène Marais, one of the most complex and outstanding Afrikaners who ever lived, but is at the same time a panorama of South African history. Rousseau's account of the life of Eugène Marais begins in the early days of Pretoria (1871) and ends three years after Hitler's rise to power. Between these two dates are sandwiched many of the great events of Afrikaner and South African history: the British occupation of Pretoria, the beginning of the Afrikaans language movement, the Jameson raid, 'the naughty nineties' (when Marais was in London), the Boer War and its aftermath, World War I, and the rise of Afrikaner nationalism. Against this changing canvas, Rousseau introduces the reader to Marais in all his complexity, he explores Marais's talents as a naturalist, hypnotist, doctor and psychologist. He gives us an insight into Marais as an advocate, citizen of the world, magician and author and also takes us into his life as the widower, the lover and the tragic morphine addict.

'Raunchy and cheeky entertainment' Sunday Express 'Immense fun' Daily Telegraph Roald Dahl, the brilliant and worldwide acclaimed author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and many more classics for children, also wrote scores of short stories for adults. Book excerpt: The doctors who tried to save President John F. Kennedy at Parkland Hospital in November of 1963 agreed-either out of respect or fear-not to publish what they had seen, heard, and felt. Then in 1990, one of the Dallas surgeons who worked on JFK in Trauma Room One, Dr. Charles Crenshaw, decided after much deliberation that the American people ought to know the truth. "The wounds to Kennedy's head and throat that I examined were caused by bullets that struck him from the front, not the back, as the public has been led to believe," says Crenshaw. When the first edition of this book was published in 1992, under the title JFK: Conspiracy of Silence, Crenshaw revealed what he never had to opportunity to tell the Warren Commission. In the aftermath, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) called Crenshaw's book "a fabrication." But JAMA's claim did not hold up in court and Crenshaw subsequently prevailed in a defamation suit against JAMA. In the process, a number of new medical disclosures and discoveries have emerged on the startling medical cover-up of the JFK assassination. CHARLES A. CRENSHAW, M.D. (1933-2001), a Texas native, was Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Surgery and a member of the Board of Directors of the Tarrant County Hospital District in Fort Worth. He received his BS from Southern Methodist University and his MS from East Texas State University. He worked on his Ph.D. at Baylor University Graduate Research Institute in 1957 and, in 1960, he earned his M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He interned at Veteran's Administration Hospital and completed his residency at Dallas's Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he worked for five years. He taught at many institutions, including the UT Southwestern Medical School. He was honored with inclusions in numerous medical and professional societies and was published extensively.

Covering both the political shifts of the time and the cultural fallout of the national tragedy, this book introduces both an iconic event and the context in which that event was heralded as iconic. Drawing on newspaper articles, political speeches, letters, and diaries, the author critically re-examines the event of JFK’s death and its persistent political and cultural legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anxious Assassins is another attempt at finally finding out the truth of what happened on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. In a 2003 interview, Robert Blakey, the Chief Counsel of the HSCA issued a statement on the CIA: "...I no longer believe that we were able to conduct an appropriate investigation of the CIA and its relationship to Oswald.... We now know that the Agency withheld from the Warren Commission the CIA-Mafia plots to kill Castro. Had the commission known of the plots, it would have followed a different path in its investigation. The Agency unilaterally deprived the commission of a chance to obtain the full truth, which will now never be known. Significantly, the Warren Commission's conclusion that the agencies of the government co-operated with it is, in retrospect, not the truth. The Agency's process could only have been designed to frustrate the ability of the committee in 1976-1979.If you want the real story you'll have to read "The Anxious Assassins."

Book excerpt: Written in 1881, when melodrama and farce were still at their peak of popularity, Ibsen’s Ghosts is a three-act tragedy that explores uncomfortable, even forbidden themes. It is also a highly critical commentary on the morality of the day. The play centers around the widow of a prominent Norwegian sea captain whose son returns home and, with tragic consequences, revives the ghosts of the past that she has long labored to put to rest. Ghosts immediately became a source of controversy for its inclusion of topics like venereal disease, incest, and euthanasia, and it was banned from being performed in England for many years. Its arrival signals a shift in the nature of theatre and, despite negative criticism, it was translated into other languages and performed in Sweden, Germany, and New York within a few years of its debut. It stands now as one of the works considered to have ushered in the era of modern drama. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
