Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ontario High School English Composition The High School English Composition is intended as a text-book for use in the Lower Schools of the High and Continuation Schools. But, although the treatment is elementary, it covers the whole course in Composition, and may, therefore, be used as a basis of review in the Middle School also. As the plan and method of treatment here followed is different from that found in most text-books on Composition, a word of explanation may be necessary. In most Composition text-books each division of the subject is dealt with fully before another division is taken up. In this book, however, the material has been arranged according to what is sometimes known as the "spiral" method. The simpler points in paragraphing, sentence-structure, etc., are presented side by side in the earlier chapters, and the lessons are arranged in the order of increasing difficulty. The advantages of this spiral method of treatment are that the lessons are graded in difficulty, and that it is possible for the pupil to cover the different divisions of the subject in an elementary way during the first year. In this way a suitable course is provided for the pupil who is able to remain only one year at school. The book is divided into two parts: Part I for the first year, and Part II for the second. Part I deals with the elements of punctuation and form; the choice and use of words; the structure of the sentence, the paragraph, and the whole essay; and also with the principles of simple narration, exposition, description, and argument. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public School Grammar: And Elements of Composition; With Numerous Exercises; Authorized for Use in the Public Schools of Ontario by the Minister of Education The other Exercises with which the book abounds have intentionally been made numerous: lst, because it is not only right but also profitable to gratify the desire young people always have to apply knowledge as soon as they have gained it; 2ud, because a truth or a principle is not the useful, permanent property of the learner till he can reproduce it, and correctly put it in practice. These Exercises are intended to be suggestive rather than exhaustive. Looking to the intelligence of the class, the teacher will decide whether, before passing on to what follows, the class should do part of an Exercise, the whole of it, or additional Exercises of his own making. No apology is offered for the attention given throughout the book to the subject of Punctuation. This important part of Composition is sadly neglected, and no improvement can be looked for till teachers and pupils are convinced that a written sentence is not finished till it is punctuated, and that faulty punctuation is as great a disgrace as faulty spelling. By the appeal that is continually made to the experience and to the linguistic needs of the pupils themselves, it is hoped that an interest and an impressiveness have been given to the Lessons which could not be secured so well in any other way. It is hoped, too, that by this means, and by following, as much as possible, the inductive method, the subject of Grammar has been rescued from the category of studies to be learned by rote and recited memoriter, and made the means of valuable mental training. Free use has been made by the author of the labors of his predecessors, particularly of the Essentials of English Grammar, by Prof. Whitney, of Yale. In some places he has but adapted this most excellent work to the circumstances and needs of Canadian Public Schools. In order that a Public School pupil proceeding to a High School may be saved some confusion, this book, both in matter and in language, has been assimilated, as much as its nature permitted, to the High School Grammar; the privilege of doing this having been generously afforded by the author of that work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition in the High School, the First and Second Years Narration is perhaps the most natural form of discourse, and the one most suited to the interests 'and capacities of young people. It ought, therefore, to serve as an introduction to the course in composition in both the first and the second years. Oral narra tion dealing with material at hand, in literature lessons, or in every-day events, has already been mentioned. The transition from the spoken to the written theme is easily effected. Brief ly related incidents and anecdotes will furnish opportunity for dealing with some of the most vital principles of composition. There need be no lack of material, since it can be constantly supplied through the agencies of reading, observation, memory, and imagination. Almost any girl, looking out of a window at home, or any boy, loitering up the street on an errand, will note some incident that will furnish forth the body and sinews of a theme. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary English Composition The indifference of younger classes in the secondary schools to their English composition is due to a variety of causes, of which three are worthy of special considera tion. In. The first place, there is a lack of novelty in present methods of teaching the subject. The kind of work that is usually prescribed for such classes seems to the pupils to be a mere repetition of what they have tried over and over again in the lower grades. The grammar review, for instance, which confronts them on the threshold of the secondary course, is usually nothing more than a re-view, affording them no new view of their English, and calling for the exercise of no new form of ingenuity that might enlist their interest. In the second place, one side of the pupil's training in English, and a most important side, is at this stage of his progress almost entirely neglected. The forces which urge young persons to express themselves with tongue or pen are partly individual, partly social, partly impulses from within, partly solicitations from without. Pupils com pose most naturally and most successfully when the two forces are in equilibration. But at the beginning of secondary instruction it is not uncommon for the teacher to rely upon the inward stimulus alone. He does not lead his pupils to think of the other man for whom they are writing or speaking. He leaves them in the attitude, and the spirits, of soldiers who are firing their ammunition into the void. Composition is primarily a training in thought - in the acquisition of ideas and their orderly and effective arrangement. It is the child's thought that must be trained. Nature's wisdom lives in his instinctive interests and aptitudes, and these determine the material to be presented. What the child rejects or cannot handle must be put aside; what he sees and does in the daily round of life - that interests him because it is near, familiar, and his own - that is the starting - point. Outside his own world the dominant mental interest of the child is the story, especially the story that deals with animals, with primitive life, and is touched with wonder. This narrative interest will naturally progress through the fairy tale, the fable, the legend, historical incident, and biography. As the child grows, his growing powers of observation, analysis, and reasoning will permit and call for the varied material offered by nature, human and animal industry, persons, industrial processes, qualities of men and things, and the general questions discussed whenever his schoolmates or his elders gather together. This material - most of it - must be given 'the pupil; but he must think it over, and possess it; and the teacher must assure his possession of it by requiring discussion, topical outlines, and reproduction of its content. This material must be interesting - No profit grows where is no pleasure ta'en. It must be presented In small units - in units to ensure that essential of good teaching lesson unity, and in small units to suit the child's capacity. This material must have a sequence, a progressive develop ment of theme. Adding knowledge where something already is known means rational and permanent growth. Other studies, particularly Literature, History, and Nature Study, will afford good material as well; for Composition is not merely a branch of English, it is a function of mind. Initiative and Personality. More than any other school subject Composition calls for the child's own power of doing, his own mental initiative. The process of composition should be interest in the material, made intelligent by discussion, turning to expression. Thought that interests the child has dynamic power to stimulate his own mental activity. When he rewrites a story that he likes he will reproduce his own View of it, and bring his imagination into play. And imagination should be exercised in the school - room as one of the most precious mental gifts. Whatever talent the child has for drawing will respond to the call made upon him to illustrate the story. The play instinct, the instinct of make-believe a vast source of delight and mental growth in children can be turned to account, at every stage of the study.
