Book excerpt: From USA Today bestseller Delancey Stewart: A touching new standalone romance in the Kasper Ridge series; I’ve got a plan to get out of this tiny town and off to the adventure I’ve been dreaming of. I’m just missing one tiny thing to pull this plan off… a boyfriend. I’ve been running the Kasper Ridge Guides and Gear shop since after high school. And for a long time, it’s been enough. But when I final in a contest to win the adventure of a lifetime, I’m ready to head out and see the world outside this tiny Colorado town. The only problem? My inside source says the contest organizers want to give the prize to a couple. And I’m decidedly single. Luckily, I’ve become good friends with Travis, a ridiculously handsome, intimidatingly large former fighter pilot. He’s unavailable in every sense of the word. Or at least that’s what I think…until we kiss in a moment of passion I never expected. And then suddenly, leaving town doesn’t seem like such a great plan. Pretending to be in love with Travis isn’t hard, and the cameras following us around for the week capture some footage that make it look it’s not too hard for him, either. But then an “unresolved issue” from Travis’s past shows up at the resort and reminds me exactly why I don’t date tall, gorgeous men in the first place.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Catherine Anderson takes readers to a quaint wilderness town, where a man and a woman find a second chance at life—and love… Determined to give her son Jeremy the childhood he deserves, Chloe Evans has left a tough past behind and is starting fresh in the charming resort town of Jack Pine, Oregon. But protecting Jeremy becomes a dicey proposition when he seeks out the most dangerous man in town to heal his sick puppy. Chloe has been warned to stay away from Ben Longtree. But there’s something about the gentle, untamed loner that intrigues her… Long ago, Ben accepted his role as town outcast. Rumored to have once killed a man, he lives in splendid isolation with his forgetful mother, secretly employing his skills as a veterinarian to heal the wounded animals that mysteriously come to him. Now, Chloe’s sunny warmth and brave tenacity arouse desires he has long denied. And although Ben is notorious for his healing touch, it is Chloe’s hands—and heart—that have the power to save his battered soul.

Shaun has been perpetually unlucky in love. None of the women he meets are his mate...but that doesn't stop him from finding enjoyment with those he becomes close to. All that changes on the day he meets Meeghan Nicholson, a new deputy for the town of Stonepass. Shaun recognises that the feisty black-haired beauty is the one he's been searching for all his life. So it's a shame that the woman hates him on first sight. Now a man who's always been known to speak before he thinks must sweet talk his way into his mate's arms. Meeghan is tired of men who think that because she's a woman they can get her to do whatever they want. Her body might soften at Shaun Colfer's seductive touch, but she refuses to let her heart succumb to the sneaky shifter. Can Meeghan calm Shaun's tempestuousness? Can Shaun crack the shell surrounding Meeghan's heart? It just might work...but only with a mate's touch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike the other senses, touch ranges beyond a single sense organ, encompassing not only the skin but also the interior of the body. It mediates almost every aspect of interpersonal relations in antiquity, from the everyday to the erotic, just as it also provides a primary point of contact between the individual and the outside world. The essays in this volume explore the ways in which touch plays a defining role in science, art, philosophy, and medicine, and shapes our understanding of topics ranging from aesthetics and poetics to various religious and ritual practices. Whether we locate the sense of touch on the surface of the skin, within the body or – less tangibly still – within the emotions, the sensory impact of touching raises a broad range of interpretive and phenomenological questions. This is the first volume of its kind to explore the sense of touch in antiquity, bringing a variety of disciplinary approaches to bear on the sense that is usually disregarded as the most base and obvious of the five. In these pages, by contrast, we find in touch a complex and fascinating indicator of the body’s relation to object, environment, and self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structuring Sense explores the difference between words however defined and structures however constructed. It sets out to demonstrate over three volumes that the explanation of linguistic competence should be shifted from lexical entry to syntactic structure, from memory of words to manipulation of rules. Its reformulation of how grammar and lexicon interact has profound implications for linguistic, philosophical, and psychological theories about human mind and language. Hagit Borer departs from language specific constructional approaches and from lexicalist approaches to argue that universal hierarchical structures determine interpretation, and that language variation emerges from the morphological and phonological properties of inflectional material. Taking Form, the third and final volume of Structuring Sense, applies this radical approach to the construction of complex words. Integrating research in syntax and morphology, the author develops a new model of word formation, arguing that on the one hand the basic building blocks of language are rigid semantic and syntactic functions, while on the other hand they are roots, which in themselves are but packets of phonological information, and are devoid of both meaning and grammatical properties of any kind. Within such a model, syntactic category, syntactic selection and argument structure are all mediated through syntactic structures projected from rigid functions, or alternatively, constructed through general combinatorial principles of syntax, such as Chomsky's Merge. The meaning of 'words', in turn, does not involve the existence of lexemes, but rather the matching of a well-defined and phonologically articulated syntactic domain with conceptual Content, itself outside the domain of language as such. In a departure from most current models of syntax but in line with many philosophical traditions, then, the Exo-Skeletal model partitions 'meaning' into formal functions, on the one hand, and Content, on the other hand. While the former are read off syntactico-semantic structures as is usually assumed, Content is crucially read off syntactico-phonological structures.
