Book excerpt: Dual-enrollment is an educational learning modality where high school students take a college course simultaneously earning credit at both the high school and college level. The nature of the environment must be chronicled and analyzed to find out what is happening. This qualitative study was designed to research New Mexico students who take dual-enrollment courses online from a rural community college. The purpose was to understand what these students were experiencing. Ten former online dual-enrollment students participated in this phenomenological mode of inquiry. Seidman's (2006) in-depth interviewing approach was used to interview the participants. A questionnaire was also utilized to determine the demographic information of the study group. In-depth interviewing consists of engaging in three ninety-minute interviews with each participant. For this study, the three research questions were the topics for each interview. The questions were: (1) How is it that you came to be an online dual-enrollment student at your college? (2) What was it like to be an online dual-enrollment student at your college? (3) What does it mean to have been an online dual enrollment student at your college? Per the Seidman (2006) approach, profiles of each participant were crafted in order to share the interviewing data. Data analysis and interpretation revealed common themes the participants experienced. The themes included parental involvement in school, familial influence on college attendance, student and parental inclusion in the decision, convenience for sports and work, persistence and acceleration through college, financial benefit to family, and spreading the word. This study tells the stories of the participants. It gives insight into their experiences and allows for further understanding of the phenomenon of online dual-enrollment learning. The results expose opportunities for future research at the federal, state and local levels of education.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine academic and social experiences of students who participated in a two-year intensive dual enrollment program housed on a community college campus. The academic experiences were examined through an analysis of community college and university data for 275 dually enrolled students and a comparison group of 258 traditional community college transfer students. An independent test of means was used to compare dual enrollment students to traditional community college transfer students. The findings were significant and found that dually enrolled students had higher community college GPAs, higher associate's and bachelor's degree completion rates, and shorter time periods to associate's degree completion. The social experiences were examined through the use of a survey from 93 students who participated in the intensive dual enrollment program. Repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to examine the students' experiences while participating in the dual enrollment program compared to their regular high school and compared to the university. The analysis revealed that the dually enrolled students had significantly higher ratings of overall satisfaction with the dual enrollment program and better quality ratings for relationships with students, faculty, and administration while participating in the dual enrollment program, compared to their experiences while at the high school and university. Qualitative analysis of open-ended survey questions revealed that the dually enrolled students typically missed their friends and extracurricular activities of their regular high school, but many positive aspects of the dual enrollment experience made up for "missing out" on a traditional high school experience. Initially, students opted to participate in dual enrollment in order to get a free head start on college. Many survey respondents indicated that the small size of the program was crucial to their success by providing a close-knit family environment. Recommendations are provided for policymakers to support dual enrollment programs and for high school, community college, and university advisors to provide guidance to address the unique concerns of dual enrollment students.

Book excerpt: In spring 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to switch quickly to online learning. Before then, Hawaiʻi had been expanding its dual credit program, in which high school students could take courses that would yield both high school and college credits. These dual credit programs require partnerships between high schools and colleges. RTI International conducted a multi-method analysis to examine the effect of this COVID-19–based transition to online learning on the dual credit, analyzing data from the state longitudinal data system and conducting surveys and focus groups of the University of Hawaiʻi’s instructors, high school coordinators, and high school staff involved with program. From spring 2020 to fall 2020, students took some dual enrollment courses even though offerings and enrollment declined; offerings and enrollment rebounded by spring 2021. The percentage of course-takers earning both high school and college credit remained about the same during this transition. Examining outcomes for student and school subgroups shows that male students struggled more than female students did with enrollment during this transition, and students in rural schools had a steeper decline in the rate of earning both high school and college credits. However, both groups did begin to recover by spring 2021.

Book excerpt: This particularistic qualitative study examined the perceptions of 18 students' dual credit experience and the viewpoints of three administrators. While limited in scope, this study makes an important contribution to what is currently known about dual credit experiences from students that have graduated with a dual degree at the completion of high school. Primary data collection occurred through individual interviews with the students and with the administrators. Nine themes were identified from the qualitative analysis of the students' interview responses and 10 themes were identified from analysis of the administrators interview responses. Student themes related to influence, the dual credit experience, student decisions/choices, value, desire to continue, dual credit concerns, advice to high school students, and the top three advantages to a dual credit program. The student participants reported that, while the dual credit experience had been challenging, the program resulted in positive educational outcomes, time savings, cost savings, and access to college courses. Administrator themes related to the dual credit enrollment process, influence, the student experience, support systems, student choice, outcomes of acquiring a dual degree, impact of dual degree status on pursuit of higher education, degree completion, advice for dual credit students, and the future of dual credit programs. While the three administrator participants valued the dual credit program, each provided a unique view of the program. The findings from this study may help to improve future dual credit experiences for the students and help to create a favorable relationship between the community college and high school. Conclusions drawn from the findings were reported. Implications for policy, research, and practice were identified. Recommendations were made for further research.

Book excerpt: This research sought to understand the experiences and perceptions of first-generation, low-income (FGLI) students enrolled in their first semester of a dual enrollment program (DEP) in a rural county in the southeastern United States. The study followed a basic qualitative design. Participants enrolled in their first semester of college courses during the 2019-2020 school year, were first in their family to attend college, and qualified for the Free or Reduced Lunch (FRL) program. Eight participants were selected, one from each of the following categories: male and female, White and non-White, and high- and low-grade point averages. Data were collected during three interviews and coded by In Vivo, Emotion, Process, and Pattern coding during the analysis process. Five themes were uncovered through the data analysis process including college readiness skills, anxiety, support systems, interactions, and persistence. Implications for practice are provided, including teacher recommendations and surveys within the application process and creating a mentor program to provide support systems for the students. Future research is suggested to include studying the differences in experiences and perceptions of FGLI students in DEPs at 2-year and 4-year colleges, the difference in persistence rates in academic and technical courses for the DEP at 2-year colleges, the differences in anxiety and self-confidence levels for female and male students, and the experiences and perceptions of FGLIs in a DEP during the Covid-19 global pandemic. Book excerpt: A three-year study tracking outcomes for approximately 3,000 students across California shows that career-focused dual enrollment programs can provide important benefits for those who are underachieving and underrepresented in higher education. Dual enrollment, which allows high school students to take college courses and earn college credit, was once geared primarily toward high-achieving students seeking greater academic challenge. The Concurrent Courses initiative comprised eight programs involving 10 colleges and 21 high schools across California. Among participating students, 60 percent were students of color and 40 percent came from non-English speaking homes. Extensive evaluation shows that program participants, compared with other students in their districts, were: (1) More likely to graduate from high school; (2) More likely to transition to a four-year college rather than a two-year college; (3) Less likely to take basic skills courses in college; (4) More likely to persist in postsecondary education; and (5) Accumulating more college credits. Policymakers and community leaders can build on the lessons learned from the Concurrent Courses initiative and further reduce the barriers to program development and student participation. Based on the experience and outcomes attained in high schools and colleges across California, here are three high-value recommendations for state policymakers: (1) Remove funding penalties; (2) Make dual credit earning consistent and portable; and (3) Standardize broad student eligibility. Book excerpt: This report examines the ways that credit-based transition programs (CBTPs) may help middle- and low-achieving students enter and succeed in college. It highlights promising practices used by CBTPs to help students who might have been considered noncollege-bound prepare for college credit course work. The report also discusses the challenges that CBTPs face when trying to include such students. The research for this report was conducted in the spring and fall of 2004. Case studies were undertaken in five states: California, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, and Texas. Two dual enrollment programs, an MCHS (Middle College High School), an International Baccalaureate program, and a Tech-Prep program were studied. The first section of the report describes the sites and examines some of the ways in which contextual features influence program implementation. The report then highlights findings regarding four key program features--student recruitment and selection processes; curriculum; support services; and data collection and use. For each feature, the researchers investigated the current practices of the case study sites, identified those practices that seemed most promising in meeting the needs of middle- and low-achieving students, and identified barriers to implementing them. An appendix presents more detailed profiles of each research site. Recommendations for policymakers and practitioners include: encourage broad student access; build strong collaborative relationships; and work with researchers to gather outcomes data.
