Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Woman and Four Others describes, in the first person, the childhood, the adolescence and the young adulthood of a woman born in Cuba in the middle thirties, who subsequently emigrates to the United States. The first part of the novel depicts the joyous wonder of an emotionally and artistically sensitive child discovering the world that surrounds her in an accurate portrayal of a particular geography and of a well-defined epoch. Yet, the real subjects of One Woman and Four Others are the passage of time and its impact on the growth of a human being, and the sensation of transitoriness of life that impels us to cling to the memories of our past. In this sense Robles’s novel can be compared to Marcel Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu – In Search of Lost Time. The figure of the mother dominates the whole book. For Proust and for Robles the persistent presence of the mother during the entire life of the protagonists is, evidently, related to the search for lost time. Among the four women loved by the narrator of One Woman and Four Others the most important is Marisol, whose influence can be felt throughout the novel and who affects all the other love relationships of the protagonist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1977, when author Dr. Norma L. Winter overcame the adversities of her youth and became the only female high school principal in the state of West Virginia, less than three percent of the school administrators in the United States were women. In A Woman in a Mans World, she shares her professional journey into school administration during a time when gender differences among administrators were obvious and roadblocks to success were copious. In this memoir, Winter describes a personal and inspirational triumph over hardship, and she includes meaningful contributions to the study of contrasts between the careers of male and female school administrators. She tells a story about her nontraditional and unconventional life in which she beat the odds both personally and professionally. In the end, she reflects she may have been happiest when she was a woman in a mans world. Praise for A Woman in a Mans World Winters book is an inspirational resource. Kirkus Review A treasure trove of historical and practical information. Clarion Review Winters tale reads as a powerful model of ambition and drive. Blue Ink Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book is the result of an international research project that spanned nearly a decade. Authors from a half-dozen countries discuss women's roles in public administration in the context of their overall participation in the labor force. Women and Public Administration presents some astounding results derived from the authors’research into a particular country's government, politics, and the role of women in that country. The authors, women born and currently living in India, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, and the United States, discuss four main topics: the number and level of female civil servants in the highest ranks of at least two bureaucracies, one concerned with traditionally female roles and one concerned with traditionally male roles; the career histories of these women; an institutional description of women in public bureaucracies; and the perceptions of women in public administration concerning discrimination and equality policies. This important book also describes historical, demographic, economic, and governmental information and women's views of barriers, access to training and advancement, and the general social climate for women employees at various levels within the bureaucracies. Researchers, aware of cultural and language differences and the dangers of imposing a Western model on non-Western cultures, used questionnaires and interviews to obtain much of the information for this study. Each country has its own unique story involving history, the structure of the labor market, the organization of government, and the socialization patterns of the culture, as well as the current patterns of interaction between men and women and current public policies affecting these matters. Women and Public Administration contains much valuable information for everyone interested in women's roles in bureaucracies around the world.

Book excerpt: Islam is an all inclusive way of life which covers the intellect and the real, the theoretical and the practical. The major part of the Islamic code of practice and behavior is formalised in the discipline of Islamic law which established itself as a discipline before other Islamic disciplines. The early Muslim jurisconsultants are to be credited as the pioneers of the development of the Islamic legal system. Shaikh Mohammad ibn Hasan ibn 'Ali Abu Ja'far al-Tusi (385-460 AH/995-1067 AD), who was given the honorary title of Shaikh al-Ta'ifat al-Imamiyyah (The Head of the Shi'a Islamic School) was at the orefront of these pioneers. His book Al-Nihayah fi Mojarrad al-Fiqh wa al-Fatawa (A Concise Description of Islamic Law and Legal Opinions) has been recognised as one of the major early sources, references and textbooks in the field of Islamic Law in general and of Shi'a Islamic law in particular. This book has been translated, edited and introduced by Professor A. Ezzati, and published by ICAS Press as the present volume.

Book excerpt: This book presents ground-breaking theoretical, and empirical knowledge to produce a fine-grained and encompassing understanding of the costs and benefits that different groups of Asian migrants, moving between different countries in Asia and in the West, experience. The contributors—all specialist scholars in anthropology, geography, history, political science, social psychology, and sociology—present new approaches to intersectionality analysis, focusing on the migrants’ performance of their identities as the core indicator to unravel the mutual constituitivity of cultural, social, political, and economic characteristics rooted in different places, which characterizes transnational lifestyles. The book answers one key question: What happens to people, communities, and societies under globalization, which is, among others, characterized by increasing cultural disidentification?
