Book excerpt: The 9th Infantry Division was formed in a new and unique way in 1966. Traditionally, soldiers attended basic training on one Army post, Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at another, then reported to their units to begin serving with soldiers they had never met. The 9th was different. Recruits reported directly to the units they would serve in combat with. They received their basic and AIT under the leaders who would take them into combat in Vietnam. The book begins with training on the plains of Fort Riley, Kansas, then follows the battalion across the Pacific on the USS John Pope. It follows them to an open field, where they would have to build their own base camp. All too soon, they were thrown into the intense combat of Operations Cedar Falls, Junction City, and Manhattan. Theirs is the story of living, eating, sleeping, and trying to keep clean during perhaps the most decisive year of the most divisive war in our nations history. The story ends with a brutal battle on a nondescript hilltop and the house-to-house fighting during the Tet Offensive of 1968. It is the story of some of the bravest, most dedicated soldiers to ever wear the uniform of the United States Army.

Book excerpt: In Be the One, Justin Prince offers a roadmap for success that will help you can become the person you were designed to be. Twelve generations, 4,094 individuals, all came before you. And each one made decisions that steered both their life and yours. But sometimes, there’s that “one.” The one who chose to go a different way. The one who faced and embraced the hard times to reach the reward on the other side. The one who made the life-altering decision that ensured your very existence. Now it’s your turn. You can set a course for success, which will ensure that your future generations also succeed. But what if you’re struggling? What if success is elusive, non-existent even? How can you “be the one” for those in your future when your present feels like it’s at “zero”? In his debut book, author and speaker Justin Prince shares a roadmap, an instruction manual, which lays out simple but powerful steps that you can take—today—to reset your course and aim yourself toward success. Filled with poignant stories and personal examples from Prince’s own life, this book will show you how to— Design your future by getting clear on your vision. Update your identity and be the person who were designed to be. Build your confidence, commitment, and competence in everything you do. Find reasons to keep going and then magnify those reasons to become a success. And learn the four words spoken by John C. Maxwell that changed everything for Prince. Like your ancestors, you make choices that will affect not only you but all others in your path, today, tomorrow, and for years to come. Decide today to succeed. For yourself and for them. Decide to “be the one.”

Book excerpt: Pennsylvania's role in the development of American culture and society has received an increasing amount of attention in the past two decades, as the tercentenary celebrations of the founding of the province led to a reexamination of the colony and state's contributions to the ethnic and religious diversity of modern America. With increasing pluralism, however, the religious group that was most prominent in the establishment of the province - the Society of Friends, or Quakers - declined in its impact and importance.

A group of highly regarded Christian mental health professionals — supported by the Brazilian Body of Christian Psychologists and Psychiatrists and by the Bible Society of Brazil — have dedicated themselves to the task of commentating the therapeutic content of the biblical text, using their gifts and professional experience to explain how the Holy Scriptures foster our physical, mental, and spiritual health. This volume is the first fruit of this work in the English language, in the hope and prayer that the Wonderful Counselor will use it to help bring rest and relief to many souls who seek comfort from God's Word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006 residential real estate prices peaked and started to fall, then threatened the world's financial institutions in 2007, and confronted the global economy with disaster in 2008. In the past few years, millions of people have lost very substantial portions of their wealth. And while the markets have rebounded considerably, they are still far from a full recovery. Now, professional economists, policy experts, public intellectuals, and the public at large are all struggling to understand the crisis that has engulfed us. In The Financial Crisis of Our Time, Robert W. Kolb provides an essential, comprehensive review of the context within which these events unfolded, arguing that while the crisis had no single cause, housing finance played a central role, and that to understand what happened, one must comprehend the mechanism by which the housing industry came into crisis. Kolb offers a history of the housing finance system as it developed throughout the twentieth century, and especially in the period from 1990 to 2006, showing how the originate-to-distribute model of mortgage financing presented market participants with a "clockwork of perverse incentives." In this system, various participants-simply by pursuing their narrow personal interests-participated in an elaborate mechanism that led to disaster. The book then gives a narrative of the crisis as it developed and analyzes all of the participants in the housing market, from the home buyers to investors in collaterialized debt obligations (CDOs). At each step, the book explains in a nontechnical manner the essential relationships among the market participants and zeroes in on the incentives facing each party. The book also includes an extensive glossary and a detailed, authoritative timeline of the subprime financial crisis. Offering a unique look at the participants and incentives within the housing finance industry and its role in the biggest financial catastrophe in recent history, Robert W. Kolb provides one of the most comprehensive and illuminating accounts of the events that will be studied for decades to come as the financial crisis of our time.
