Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fe-containing ZSM-5 zeolite, or [Fe, Al]MFI, is known to catalyse various chemical reactions. Recently, it has gained increasing attention for its catalytic performance in the direct oxidation of benzene to phenol, using N2O as oxidant (BTOP). However, despite extensive efforts, the nature of the active sites in the [Fe, Al]MFI catalyst for the BTOP reaction is still largely unknown. This is mainly due to various synthesis and activation methods of [Fe, Al]MFI catalysts that have led to different interpretations. Nevertheless, there seems to be a consensus in open literature that steam-treatment of isomorphously substituted [Fe, Al]MFI zeolite forms a particular extra-framework iron species that is catalytically active in the BTOP reaction. In situ 57Fe, Mossbauer studies show that there are several active sites for the direct oxidation of benzene to phenol. These active sites are most likely small clusters of iron species with low nuclearity (e.g. enzyme-like systems). Subjecting the [Fe, Al]MFI catalysts to several controlled treatments confirms that there is a distribution of several extra-framework iron species, even at ppm levels. extra-framework iron species formed after steam-treatment, which makes it difficult to establish a direct relationship between structure and activity in the BTOP reac

Book excerpt: The gas phase direct hydroxylation of benzene into phenol with hydrogen and oxygen, as initially described by Niwa in 2002, was realized in a newly developed double-membrane reactor. In the concept described by Niwa, a dense Pd membrane is used for the (safe) dosage of dissociated hydrogen species into the tubular reaction zone, where it reacts with gas phase oxygen to form surface species capable of directly converting benzene into phenol in a single-step process.

Book excerpt: Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical that is becoming increasingly fashionable as an oxidant, both in industry and in academia and whose production is expected to increase significantly in the next few years. This growth in interest is largely due to environmental considerations related to the clean nature of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant, its by-product being only water. To date this chemical has largely been employed as a non-selective oxidant in operations like the bleaching of paper, cellulose and textiles, or in the formulation of detergents, and only to a minimal extent in the manufacture of organic chemicals. This book has been organized to cover the different aspects of the chemistry of hydrogen peroxide. The various chapters into which the book is divided have been written critically by the authors with the general aim of stimulating new ideas and emphasizing those aspects that are likely to lead to new developments in organic synthesis in the coming future.

Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive overview of the most recent developments in both total oxidation and combustion and also in selective oxidation. For each topic, fundamental aspects are paralleled with industrial applications. The book covers oxidation catalysis, one of the major areas of industrial chemistry, outlining recent achievements, current challenges and future opportunities. One distinguishing feature of the book is the selection of arguments which are emblematic of current trends in the chemical industry, such as miniaturization, use of alternative, greener oxidants, and innovative systems for pollutant abatement. Topics outlined are described in terms of both catalyst and reaction chemistry, and also reactor and process technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterogeneous catalysis has developed over the past two centuries as a technology driven by the needs of society, and is part of Nobel Prize-winning science. This book describes the spectacular increase in molecular understanding of heterogenous catalytic reactions in important industrial processes. Reaction mechanism and kinetics are discussed with a unique focus on their relation with the inorganic chemistry of the catalyst material. An introductory chapter presents the development of catalysis science and catalyst discovery from a historical perspective. Five chapters that form the thrust of the book are organized by type of reaction, reactivity principles, and mechanistic theories, which provide the scientific basis to structure-function relationships of catalyst performance. Present-day challenges to catalysis are sketched in a final chapter. Written by one of the world's leading experts on the topic, this definitive text is an essential reference for students, researchers and engineers working in this multibillion-dollar field.

The process integration and structure-properties control of the multilevel metal circuitry demand an interdisciplinary interaction and understanding between manufacturing and research. To realize the vision presented in the national technology road map, material and technological challenges will need to be overcome. For example Cu conductor and its barrier metals and low-dielectric constant insulators are at issue. For materials processing, chemical-mechanical planarization and low-temperature filling of high-aspect ratio vias are challenges. For materials examination, the metrology of submicron structures is nontrivial and for materials reliability, the interplay among multiple driving forces and the response in small-dimension microstructures are intriguing. These issues are the focus of this book from MRS. Topics include: road map, technology and metrology of submicron device structures; reliability issues for Cu metallization; Al interconnects and vias; barrier metal; interlevel low-K dielectrics and contact to Si and compound semiconductors.

Book excerpt: The pace of development in the chemical industry is increasing steadily, bringing with it a corresponding need to develop catalysts as rapidly as possible. High throughput experimentation has had great success in drug design but hitherto it has scarcely been used in the catalysis field. There is thus a need to make the underlying principles of this methodology more widely understood, in a coherent, integrated format. The present book fulfils such a need as it delineates and consolidates the principles and methods underlying accelerated catalyst design and testing. The main challenges for progress in the field are also identified. An indispensable book for all those working in catalytic process analysis and development, in industry and the academic laboratory. Contains an extensive review of catalytic principles, making the book also suitable for postgraduate students seeking to pursue a career in the catalysis field.
