Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Years of Poor Law Administration in a Warwickshire Village The fifth monograph of our series is the result of prolonged studies begun by Miss Lodge in Paris, under the direction of M. Ch. Bemont. The author intended originally to present a general description of the conditions of land tenure and rural life in medieval Gascony. A good deal of material was collected for this purpose, but the scheme proved too comprehensive, and its proper elaboration would have demanded years of further study. I proposed to Miss Lodge to narrow the investigation to one district, and, as far as possible, to connect it with the history of a great social organization. The complex of estates of the Archbishop of Bordeaux was selected as the principal object of observation, but the economy of estates belonging to the Chapter of Saint-Andre of Bordeaux was also examined, and a good deal of material from other sources used for the purpose of illustration and comparison. With these limitations, the work was carried out under my supervision in the course of 1906-9. The aim was not, of course, to accumulate materials or to discuss points of interest from the point of view of local history. Nor was the subjection of Gascony to England during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the determining factor in planning the monograph on the above-mentioned lines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the English Poor Law, Vol. 1 of 2: In Connexion With the Legislation and Other Circumstances Affecting the Condition of the People Sixty-five years ago the imperative necessity of Poor Law reform in this country forced itself upon the attention of statesmen. A faulty system had been allowed to work without safeguard or restriction, and it had fully and fairly worked itself out. The warning was upon the wall in very large letters; the national character was at stake; and the permanent welfare of England was probably in no less danger from bad Poor Laws than it had been from Napoleon Buonaparte. Fortunately the subject had not been made a party question. Fortunately, too, the very magnitude of the evil tended to disclose the causes of it, so that there coexisted several conditions favourable to prompt and successful treatment, - a pressing danger, an easy diagnosis, and a legislature ready to be swayed by Reason, if Reason could find a mouthpiece. Such was the state of things when the Whigs took the business in hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 by : Frederick Engels
Download or read book The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 written by Frederick Engels and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Condition of the Working Class in England is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels. Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels' first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle where before the introduction of mills (1779–1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five, and after their introduction the figure rose to 4,738. Before the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old, and after their introduction the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000.
